I have learned so much from you. I did a colored inkjet graphic on a crackled paint, of course learning the glue method from you! I did on a thrifted $1 bread board. First time trying, going out of the gate full force! It turned out lovely!!
Thanks for the video. Here's a tip if you don't have a laserjet printer: you can get photocopies at a local FedEx Office. That's what I do and it's really inexpensive especially if you do b&w prints.
Especially for an antique or used look, the inkjet result appears much more authentic. Top it off with a matt clear coat from the spray can and the overall look is radiant without looking like new.
How serendipitous that you uploaded a graphic transfer video today. I also uploaded a graphic transfer video today - it's my first ever video! And you and the channel Fix This Build That are responsible for my discovery. I was using both your methods, and in a rush, accidentally combined them. When I peeled back the paper, I couldn't believe my eyes! A perfect, easy, mess-free transfer. I made the video just so I could share it with you, as I've watched so many of your videos on the topic. Thanks for taking the time to share your skills with us all. It's greatly appreciated.
Well I just watched your video! What a genius idea. I need to get a wood burning tool and give it a go! Also the video was excellent and very informative . Really great for your first ( don't watch my first ones lol!!!) Keep making them and thanks for the inspiration Julie
@@OurUpcycledLife Thank you so much for the kind words.! I know you don't cricut - but do you have one of their heat presses or something similar? I have a knock-off brand mini heat press I got on amazon, the one that's like 4 inches big, and I also use it to make the transfers when I'm making larger items. I have some footage using it, so maybe I'll throw together another vid. And now that I'm thinking about it, if the mini heat press works at only 215 degrees, I bet your household iron would work also. Just like an iron on transfer on fabric. Dang-it, now I have something else I have to try! If you try it, please make a video because it will be so much better than mine!
I have used a large iron doing the same process but hard to get into small spots! I love the wood burning tool idea and I just ordered one! I’ll keep you updated
I prefer the ink jet , looks more aged . The laser In my opinion for something more up to date . As I have ink jet then going to give it a try . Many thanks for an informative, easy to follow tutorial .
Thank you Deidre for these info, I'm shopping right now to purchase a laser jet printer, guess we will be doing some signs this coming weekend. Take care, keep having fun crafting and stay safe !
An interesting option when wanting a laser jet printed page… many libraries have a laser printer so you can take your computer there and print off at the library, for a small fee (depending on one’s library). Or, some companies will let you print on their laser jet printer for a small fee. For example, my husband’s work has a laser jet printer and he can print off graphics for me for 10 cents a page. Nice options.
I wonder if you sprayed the blank sheet of paper with sealer before printing, then sprayed again after printing, if it would encapsulate the inkjet ink and make it more vibrant and more workable? 🤔
I love your tutorials! If I want to transfer a photo printed with an inkjet printer, do I need to put it in the oven for 10mn at 200? I've seen this in another tutorial. THanks!
Deidre, have you made or cut raw tree branches for transferring images to? If you have, do you dry the wafer before transferring? or transfer when it's still green. I love this idea and thought of gifting these as Christmas ornaments. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge! Merry Christmas!
New to your channel and blown away with your skill. I retire soon and am really looking forward to trying some of the things you are sharing. May I please ask what software do you use to make your signs? They look so good.
Hi Deidre! Absolutely love this! Not sure if you will see this since this video was recorded a while back, but does wood “require” the chalk paint? I have wanted to try this on some mahogany I recently came across- and did not want to paint it. I just figured the ink would seep into the wood grain even better; but no? So thankful for all your ideas and insight! Learning so much!! Missy (in Jacksonville, FL)❤️
It looks great! But I think the inkjet's final product suits the "antique" look a little better. The laserjet looks great if a person is not aiming for a shabby chic or "recycled" look, right?
I do have a question still! I print on tissue paper a lot and always let dry then spray with matte sealer (2 coats), let dry then apply to whatever I am working on. This keeps my inkjet ink from smearing and works perfectly! I am wondering if I do that for graphics applied on wood maybe it would looks crisper like the laser jet ink does..?!?! Ever tried it?
@@OurUpcycledLife I was thinking to seal the paper first so when it transfers there might be a more crisp less gray look. It is always worth a go, isn’t it? Might be a game changer for those of us who don’t have a laser jet printer!😊
Thank you so much!! Next question... sorry... laser printers seem 2 only print in b&w unless they go up in price? Do you know of 1 you would recommend?
Hi Deidre, I use a Laser Printer and I don’t have any issues rubbing off the paper and have done many wood signs with awesome results. The only problem I sometimes have is that there is a cloudy film of paper left behind… I slightly dampen it again, only slightly and some more comes off but not all. I find when I put a coat of PolyCrylic over top, it helps… but, Is there any way around this?
You sometimes can have that happen and it might be the paper you are using. Try and find the cheapest thinnest paper. the less you have to rub off the better. I jsut do really smaller sections when it still is cloudy like that a dip my fingers in a dish of water and work at it. All else fails yes poly will take alot of that away. Thanks for watching Mary-Anne
Great tutorial thank you😅 If I may ask - I use laser printer and gel medium (liquitex)and some transfers are good and some hazy, with white film, but I cant rub off paper more because I will loose oicture on wood. Do you know maybe how to avoid this?😢
I have 2 questions about this: 1) can I take prints to my local UPS store & make copies on a laser copier? & 2) I have a simple Brother Laser Printer that we use as a standalone copier because software is too glitchy & slow. Can I do similar thing by printing graphic on my inkjet & then copying on the Brother laser printer?
Hello I tried to do this but the red ink smudge even after spraying it with hairspray do you have another way besides hairspray to make it not run? Thanks😊
For the ink jet should you bake it to help get the ink to set? I have done it without and had a little ink run but nothing that some touch paint couldn't fix. Trying to see though if setting the ink in the over would help.
I don’t think using it for this process would help if you put it in the oven some inkjet printers just work better than others for not running so if yours is working out pretty good you are fortunate
@@OurUpcycledLife I have an Epson Eco-Tank so it doesn't run to much and what does run I use qtips to get the smears off then hand paint over the whole design. Just wasn't sure if you had tested it to see if it could help me save time and eliminate those steps.
Hi, enjoy all your videos & techniques. I have a question about the graphic transfer. Can this technique work on plastic or vinyl surfaces? I would like to transfer a image on a faux leather surface. Thanks.
How do you resize your photos to print for a specific size? I am needing a program to be able to print a photo in INCHES so I can print it the exact size I need. I don’t have a paint program on my iPad, if I do I can’t find it. I have several photo editing programs but none of them have inches, only pixels!! I am wanting to start decoupaging with photos and I need to be able to make each photo a specific size. Thank you.
Does the background that you're doing this on need to be white? Or whatever color is the background color of the print? And can you do it with a piece of paper that was printed several days previous or does it have to be a freshly printed design?
Yes you can do it on a painted color but can be tricky and you can see the outline of transfer sometimes. White is easiest. I have left for weeks and still works ! Thanks for watching
Do you know of any online company's that can do laser jet printing? I'm from a small area and no one around here prints using a laser jet. I just want to try a graphic before I buy a laser printer

I think the ink jet gives more of a faded and vintage look...the laser jet is to sharp and crisp for the vintage look on what is suppose to be old wood...just my opinion...
