The fact Toby and I are the same age is partly why I feel like I resonated so freaking much with his works. Also, I just want to say how impressive it is that Toby Fox couldn't actually read music (at the time) and taught himself all of this via playing by ear
I did that with my clarinet in middle school, though me being able to read music helped out a lot. I could play Concerning Hobbits, Amon Hen, Ride of the Rohirrim, and several others from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, as well as a few songs from Zelda and Fire Emblem, all of which I was obsessed with at the time
I'm sure by now Toby can understand notation. He's been making music for the majority of his life by now, and his understanding of music theory trumps most musicians due to just the sheer size of his discography.

@@Ledundeadv66 Well he learned how to produce music on a computer because he wanted to make music for a webcomic, but I think he's been playing the piano since he was a kid.
What a talented pianist. I wonder what he would do in the future... maybe make a Japanese-styled RPG based off of Earthbound and Touhou where you don't have to hurt anyone, can pet many dogs, go on a date with a skeleton, make millions off of it, and then make his dream game where we have to wait 3 years for a new chapter/set amount of chapters.
making a few messy notes for my own future reference: - most of the chord harmonising with the melody is done in the right hand with dyads and triads, not really in the left which mostly provides bass via alternating octaves, apart from when playing broken chords in left hand. need to practice this style lol. look at 37:04 for simple example - many parts of the songs are being played completely different from how they actually are (even from his own songs, e.g. black!) this fucking blew my mind. i wonder when he transcribes his music to fl studio or whatever, whether he takes a specific recording of him playing piano for that song and then transcribes it, or just writes out a melody that comes while programming notes directly in the DAW? in fact looking at a lot of the songs played (e.g. aggrieve at 0:25), he improvs completely different melodies to the original. is this for bits of songs he can't remember, or intentional experimentation? - with some unfamiliar songs, he'll run through the melody as quick as possible in the right hand disregarding tempo just to get the notes before properly attempting playing the song - doesn't care about original key songs are in - i wonder how he goes about writing bgm like e.g. school from deltarune soundtrack, if he mostly sticks to octave/broken chords in left hand? (the bass adds a basic two-part counterpoint.) perhaps he starts with the melody and a basic accompaniment, then programs in the bassline after? maybe i'm just a bad piano player though and he has good enough hand independence to write music like that at the piano without leaning on a computer? - makes sure to play all notes even if tempo slows down, rather than skipping over some to keep time, which probably is much more important for composition - playing by ear in the sense of playing by memory, rather than sitting down with a mp3 file and slowly playing/pausing decipher the notes...
Haven't checked this for all of the tracks, but I think he always starts off in either C major or C minor, probably because he is used to those keys and can easily anticipate on chords when improvising
I think it's fair to assume Toby does a lot of the writing, if not most, in FL Studio. He can certainly play the piano pretty well, and he has a good understanding of music theory, but in the past he has described writing a quick melody and maybe a chord progression on the piano before moving to FL studio and using what he made as a base for a real song. Sometimes he might never use the piano at all. The drums, the flourishes, a lot of the chords and countermelodies, and all the other little things that make his music awesome probably come to him at the computer. I haven't made nearly as much music as Toby, but what I've made was mostly done on the computer. I'm not a better writer than Toby, but I am a better player and I still experience somewhat of a bottleneck when trying to write songs on the piano that I don't experience when writing in FL. Playing some of the chords and melodies at the speed I want to in my songs sometimes just isn't possible, and I know that's the same for Radiation because his music gets very fast and complex.
Started playing piano recently so naturally I got a bunch of piano stuff in my feed for searching. Finding this in my recommended is such a gift, haha! I'm a game dev, so that's even more of a fun coincidence!
