  • My first attempt at a commentary on one of my favorite games. Please forgive that noise I make with my mouth that sounds like I'm eating starburst.

Piggybacking off of my previous comment, I really believe 3d character models navigating a 2d field screen is the best for game design. 3d environments suffer from the same issue as nes and SNES tile based field design in that texture maps are essentially tiles pasted onto 3d models. 3d games just essentially boil down to navigating copy pasta corridors. I love how varied and breezy the dungeons and field areas in the ff7 through 9 are yet at the same time, the games feel much bigger and more epic than a game like FF15. Abstractions like field screens being broken up into zones and the world map screen create the illusion of scope whereas the entire "continent" in FF15 is really the size of a small city.
I commend Id software for trying something different like megatexturing but I think hardware limitations will never make such a thing feasible because no matter how powerful hardware gets, there'll always be a resolution arms race.

I got stuck in disc 1 too! I would have gone on but my mom beat me and threw away my PlayStation so i had to pick it up when i grew up.
Have you tried Garnet only runs?

Resonant arc put it perfectly in his review, ff9 is not his subjective favorite but it may be objectively the best in series. Obviously, hironobu sakaguchi may be the greatest at telling a story in a jrpg. The game is perfectly paced. There's no copy pasta corridors for field screens and endless copy pasta hallways in dungeons which pretty much made 10, 13, and 15 extremely boring. The gameplay is extremely deep which was lost after this. Stats don't matter, equips don't matter in new games. Abilities have very rudimentary functions like damage, debuff, heal. There's nothing interesting like damage based on max hp or damage based on how many dragons you killed. You're not forced to discover and learn elemental or damage type weaknesses. FF13 and 15 pretty much play themselves. Ff12 was deep but imo menu based battles are superior because the camera can pan around and perfectly frame every attack. Additionally, the graphics in 9 are far superior to 7...7 being the only other possible for best in series. The graphics in 6 are too inferior to be considered.

This was alright. Maybe try to script the next one, though?

I doubt there will be a next one haha. This was like my first ever attempt at making a video commentary back when I was figuring stuff out for the channel
