Red is awesome dude with his priorities in check. Gren actually said "steroids for the sake of progression" I howled. The 6 finger Axe board is sweet. Great episode.
Glad Red can keep it in perspective. Shaun White leaving snowboarding, I guess I can see. We all start snowboarding because it s fun, The "community" exists because snowboarding is fun. When you turn 30 life gets real. 30 is the time to decide what your priorities are. Shaun White is one of the few rare examples of someone who did it right, Made his money and moved on. Just like pro basketball or football almost everyone falls through the cracks and ends up in some obscure situation only other people in the snowboard "community" will care about. There is a whole world outside snowboarding we (snowboarders) are basically ignoring to have fun. Much respect to the kid for his success, I hope he can make the Shaun White move to make he money and live his life outside the popularity contest that is snowboarding and the thankless industry that exchanges some product and hype for youth. Much respect to the core of the industry, And for the people who still are just having a good time. Don't forget to live your life.
Watching this interview while eating the French onion pasta bake I’ve seen on Half Baked Harvest and I had no idea they were related HAHAH I almost spat my food
is there an argument to be made that snowboarding turned its back on Shaun White? I feel like he got Tony Hawk'd because of how quickly he became famous. Especially in skateboarding/snowboarding where becoming unprecedentedly successful is immediately seen as going mainstream or not cool. Red is incredibly famous in the snowboard industry but he is nowhere close to the household name that Shaun White is, I don't think my grandma would be able to tell you who Red Gerard is. Love the interview and this is in no way a jab at Red, just purely for discussion. I just wish in industries like snowboarding people celebrated somebody making it instead of immediately assuming they're a sell out. Another great episode!
Great input, I love that point you made! Speaking for myself, (chris), in my opinion, Tony Hawk is the absolute man, I dont think ive ever heard anyone speak badly on Tony Hawk, he started a skatepark foundation which has built over 600 skateparks, he skated for lakai, he is still a skater at heart and owner of birdhouse, and is still basically heavily involved with the skate community and you can tell he loves skateboarding. In my opinion shaun white is absolutely incredible on a snowboard, nobody goes bigger, ive loved watching him dominate contests, however he has done nothing to "give back" or even associate with his fellow snowboarders or snowboarding for that matter. We are in need of a "Tony Hawk" for our sport, Tony does so much that he makes shaun look horrible in my opinion unfortunately as far as representing a sport goes. But that being said I dont know him, i would love to chat with him, and he has done great job popularizing the sport and making it more mainstream, but from what i have seen, that is about it. I could be wrong, and maybe there is stuff he has done that im missing, but watching him go huge will always be fun.
@@TheBombHole thank you Chris ! What you wrote about Shaun white is what I’ve said to outsiders who don’t know about snowboarding but know about Shaun. He’s never given shit back to the culture that’s given him everything he has, and that’s why he’s so hated. He is the worst representation for the culture we could have. Respect homie !!
You should check out Crash Reel, the documentary on Kevin Pierce. It will give you a different perspective of who Shawn White is. I also met him last winter at PC Woodward and I didn’t fan girl just a “what’s up man” and he was just kind of a dick. In the same day I rode the lift with Scotty James who was just cool as fuck. Just two different people, ones for himself ones for the culture.
i met Red in thredbo just over a year ago. I took a photo w him and at the time i didnt realise but holy fuck he was cooked as fuck. He was in another dimension
