Cycle Cruza no matter what you think, your “hard” at a motocross track is not going to be too hard for the engine break in... your mind will be opened once arrival to the track.
@@sciencemilitia1853late late reply but I’ve been riding mild private trails here and there for years, and you are completely correct. Used to the dirt and tracks still intimidate me. For new riders, it’s either a track practice day, or a ‘riding the ruts’ practice day
Your first day riding motocross will be very intimidating, but also the most fun youve had on 2 wheels. All of us motocross guys have been there. It takes years of practice to get good. So just have fun and do your thing! We're rooting for ya brother!
I'll be 49 in two months and with spinal disk damage I can never ride a dirt bike again, and I was good at it in the 80s before I stopped riding. Anyone can ride a supermoto but you have the physical condition and age for dirt bike, don't let me down bro come on get air, running over logs ain't proper trail either.
The manual break in is bs, they tell you to take it easy so YOU don't get hurt and sue them-its not about the engine getting hurt. Many successful race teams do a hard break in, warm it up and start doing moderate pulls right away. Make sure you use lots of engine breaking to slow down after a pull, the vacuum inside the engine helps clean metal shavings off the cylinder wall. Loading the engine hard is the best way to get the rings to seat well
Also bikes are held at redline for quite some time in the factory. I usually just follow the break in because it will take me about 700mi to get fully confident with a bike
Alistair B, I agree...A VERY competent engine builder once told me that you break in the engine like ur going to use it... his were broke in on the dyno, quick warm up at varied low rpms then wot pulls.... same guy won the Mopar Muscle magazine engine build-off in the early 2000's... he just might have known what he was talkin about lol.
Warp 9 is junk. You're right in that 5 inch rear is too wide for the YZ450. You need to go with a 4.5 inch rear. Excel rim laced to a Talon hub is a great set up.
I want tubeless though. You can't change tubes on a street tire like you can with a dirt tire on the road. If you get a flat with a sumo tube you will have to get a tow. I know you can use the 3m super tape to get tubeless but I hear it can fail.
@@CycleCruza - That's true. Do you carry a tubeless repair kit on your Blade everywhere you go ?? And how many times have you used it ?? They are hardly quick and easy to use, and if you get anything bigger than a nail you're gonna need a tow anyway. I think you're overthinking it.
It's worth giving the 3M tape conversions a shot IMO as the pressure inside of the wheel will force the tape to seal against the spoke nipples. Worst case scenario you can just refit the tube if you encounter any issues.
The 450l isn’t available yet plus the euro bikes that have been out for years already literally kicks the shit outta Honda. We don’t know how reliable the 450 will be since it’s a new production model
I have to try sumo for the channel, I 'm curious to see if it's better than dual sport. Also, in the winter the MX parks shut down for the season so it will be nice to hit streets in the winter in sumo trim.
I'd also recommend riding it stock before doing any mods, like others have said makes you appreciate them more. Glad to see you are doing the supermoto conversion too!!
I have a Warp 9 multi issue story from 1st hand experience. Put a new rear on my Honda CRF 450 flat tracker, kept breaking spokes. I replaced the entire wheel with stock Honda spokes and never broke another spoke. I was very happy with it until I loaned it to my son who mounted it on the Honda CRF 450 moto bike. He came home with a hub with a bunch of bearings that were loose inside the hub ripping everything inside all to crap. So you getting what you pay for is a fact to live by.
I have to break her in first and do the first oil change before hitting the mx track as stated in the video. Also, I'm waiting for my Sidi MX boots to arrive. I would rather mod it clean first.
CycleCruza, I enjoy your videos! You promote riding and riding safety so well, I bought a new Yamaha MT07 last week! Awesome bike. Already put 200 miles on it this past weekend. I seem to be the only one in my area not squiding! One dude was on a sport bike with flip flops and a tee shirt! LOL!
For any Australians here, Delo 400 is a great cheap but quality motorcycle oil- along the same line as Rotella. Plenty of zinc. About 100AUD for a 20L drum.
1. Buy the Alpinas 2. Buy a chain without O-Rings DID Chain, they are alot thinner and the maintenance is higher but you wont ride it alot (as the wr) 3. You can get a spacers for the sprocket which helps to get the chain a bit more away from the tire 4. you can offcenter a spoked wheel to the right side If you do all of this or atleast offcenter or buy spacers for the wheel and a thinner chain you will have 0 problems with chain rub.
I made a change of plans, going with Warp 9 spoke wheels (blue rim, blue hubs, blue spokes, black nipples) and I will make it tubeless by using the 3M Extreme sealing tape method and will use 90 degree stems. From what I hear this works great. I will not only save a lot of money this way but I will get the rims within a week. Alpinas take 6 weeks and will be more than double the cost.

The manufacturers of dirt bikes make those service interval recommendations based on the assumption that you'll be racing it. You don't have to change oil nearly as often when you ride around normally, i.e. not racing.

For pure street I prefer forged but if you are going off road at all I prefer spokes. So for your application I'd go spokes but that's just my personal opinion.
Measure the distance between the chain and the other side of the swingarm exactly 8.5 inches up from the axle, if it's less than 5 inch, you probably wont fit alpina, the wider the tire the more you can lean, ideally you want to get a 160 width tire on there at least, they might even fit on a 4.5 inch tire, but I dont know, I run the stock 5.5 inch on my aprilia sxv 550 for 180 tires. You might have to cut off some rubber from your tire like Saraazh did, but trust me the wider the better it's worth it.
@tom tom it depends a lot on the tire, and how steep the angle is, a wider tire with a steep angle will get you to a low lean angle smoother than a thinner one will, but for his yz he needs to try to get 160 tires to fit, because that's where 90% of the supermoto tire selection is at
@tom tom Maybe I mis spoke, a wider tire doesn't lean you further over necessarily, but it does provide more traction while over and is smoother because of extra surface area and the added suspension of the increased inner tire volume, which is to say, combined with a supermoto that is as torquey as my aprilia or any big single, it is an added advantage in the corners at the cost of tire weight, which slightly decreases acceleration. I'd say definitely for the streets go as wide as he can because the streets are dirty and full of potholes, which a wider tire is going to be less affected by the gravel and bumps on the road, again, because of tire surface area on the ground, and inner tire air volume. If he were racing track I'd say again anywhere between 150 and 170 is best, 160 being the most common, that's what the racers use, and I'm sure they have good reason.
i rid mine for like 5 minutes softly then was full throttle on it. 5 hrs in its all good. the 5.0 rear will fit and have swing arm clearance. you'd only get chain rub with a 160 rear and there are supermoto rollers to stop it. id go spoked rims. i had cast wheels on my drz supermoto when i had it. hit a pothole and it dented them.
Love your vids Cruza! I still don't understand why you are trying to make this awesome DIRT bike essentially a bigger version of or your WRR. But...I guess it is your money.
You can ride modern bikes right out the gate with out a lot of complex breakin procedures. Just stay away from high rpm / wot stuff; which is easy to do on a high powered bike like a 450.
Cycle Cruza that is a legit dirt bike!!! I know people covert them, but like you said you got the WR250R already. Suggestion start doing some dirt bike trail and Mx vlogs with the bug out van will watch 👍🏽
lmao, why buy a MX bike then, get a enduro that is stret legal on most cases, KTM 6 days was a really good option, or even the standard version, Lamb Chop Rides just got a 500 EXC and slaped some SM wheels, you shuld take note, that guyu knows
Just to add some fair warning...sometimes the DMV is a real pain in the ass about registering anything classified as something other than a "motorcycle" (often MCY), even if you put the street-legal accessories on there and follow the rules to a "T". You can always register in Vermont if Ohio gives you the runaround.
iron monkey LMAO! Not hardly... And my success in business proves the exact opposite of your marshmallow test theory, however, aside from that, the KTM IS SIMPLY A BETTER DIRT BIKE, and by the time he gets done, he’ll have the same amount of money in this one, WEEKS of time blown, and it STILL wont be legal in all 50 states, and it STILL won’t be able to keep up with the KTM. And I know because I own the KTM500 EXC-F, along with 13 other bikes, including a WR like he just put in the shop, AND I’ve also owned several YZs... Just knowledge and experience, and 43 years of riding, and owning over 30 bikes... And I’m primarily a Yamaha guy. I’ve always had more of them than anything, but when it comes to the pinnacle of dirt performance, KTM is a next-level machine... Ditto with Husky (same factory), but Husky has a thinner dealership support base in most states than KTM...
it is still your experience and preference, KTM may be a better bike for that purpose but for CC is all about dealership support and reliability, I stay with Yamaha because they have been #1 in reliability for a long time, there are dealerships everywhere near me, and for the bikes I have, I only have to do very little maintenance and the one time I had an issue, the fix was free of charge (dead battery) no they didn't charge it, they gave me a new one.... so to each his own but if KTM had bigger dealership support maybe he would have bought that one, that still doesn't make KTM as reliable as Yamaha, and finally, you can mod any vehicle to be better than others, in other words, he can mod that Yamaha to be unbeatable by a KTM in the same class modded as well, it is just how much money and time you want to spend to get better stats. At the end of the day it is all about having fun, there is always going to be someone better than you.
I agree on Yamaha reliability and dealer support (my dealers happen to be only 2 miles apart). As I already indicated, I’ve been primarily a Yamaha owner for over 40 years of riding, BUT, I rode my KTM home. A month out, CC still won’t be riding his... 😂😂😂
Is it just me that even store mechanics try to avoid or try to talk you out of changing the front sprocket, but the rear sprocket is always no problem.
CC. Supermoto's are awesome. You won't want to ride your yz in the dirt after your first supermoto blast. You may want to stiffen the suspension. The WR is stiffer from the factory. You'll have to ride it then decide. Excell rims, eagle hubs.
Youre making a mistake if you dont go ride some real off road and motocross before you sumo that bike!! I love this channel and I can't wait to see how you take on the challenge motocross!!
I’m totally confused with what your doing with this bike. You could have got a Husky or KTM with emissions and if you wanted more hp there are different avenues to go through which isn’t much work or buy a Beta and you’re good to go. All legal anywhere in the US, what you did seems ass backwards and you can’t ride it on the street in some areas.
Just drop the rear from 50 teeth to 45 or 43 and it should make it better for street use it shouldn't compromise the dirt ability too much if you still have a 13 front. I have 14/45 on my DRZ 400 and it does great on road and off
I think you're overthinking the whole tube thing. If you put in heavy duty tubes and don't drop the pressure too low, you'll be fine. You can still jump the bike and ride up staircases (I do it all the time) with a regular tubed spoke wheel.
Next video... You know guys, I have my 250 dooouuubbble rrr for the dirt. This bike is not going to be good in the dirt now with all the mods and instead of swapping things over I'm just gonna ride it on the street now. It's gonna get dirty if I go off road.
Just get the Alpina. I suggest 16x3.5 for the front and 17x5.5 on the back, maybe Borrani style! I don't think switching constantly from supermotard to enduro is a good idea!
Cool but I wander how different the swingarm is compared to 2019 is from the 2007? I hear the swingarms got narrower on the newer bikes... Either way I don't feel like waiting 2 months for wheels to come from Italy. I'm just getting the Warp 9 spokes and will do the tubeless 3M tape mod.
not sure why lotta guys on here hatin on the Warp-9's , I ride with a large group of supermoto's out here in SoCal and over 80% of us on WR's CRF's , KTM's etc all ride with Warp-9's spoke rims. I personally have 5" rear's with a chain block/guard to prevent rubbing on my 07' WR450F. plus Warp 9's have good warranty plan.
Wouldn’t the WR250R be a better Supermoto platform? I mean it’s got a bombproof engine that can handle sustained riding on the road, you’d just need new wheels. I’d seriously just keep the YZ for the dirt man.
@CycleCruza i know im late to the game but if i get the drz 450 and put supermoto wheels on it is it officially streetable or will i need to do something to the transmission??
Who makes them? I want tubeless tho, F tubes! If you get a flat with sumo tire with a tube you have to get a tow, you can swap tubes like you can with dirt wheels. The only tubeless spoke wheels is made by Alpina.
"I am going to ride it hard at the track". If that's the case, bring a second set of pants and boxers with you cause that bike will cause poo to come out the first time you ride it on dirt. Seriously just break it in on the track.
I'm doing both dirt and sumo! Actually, a lot of the pro SX/MX riders rider sumo as well. Here is a video of James Stewart riding a sumo at a race track: ruclips.net/video/Uyf941Ag13U/видео.html I used to talk shit about it too but I will try it as my viewers requested!
Supermotos make great track bikes . Do you plan on doing suspension for the bike for the street ? Dirt suspension is not optional for the street. What about break upgrade?
same brake, we'll see how she performs. If I get the Alpina tubeless spoke graphite wheels, they are super light so it may not be too bad. However, I don't think I get a 17 x 5.0 on the rear without chain rub.
Had a yammie mechanic tell us street legaling the 450’s isnt a good idea at all, he claimed that motor is not built for the street and wont take it, the bike it built for trails/tracks & not meant for the steady rpm of the street.
Actually the yz450fx is a cross country bike, same category as the wr450f, which is meant for high rpm runs on open tracks. They use these bikes in the baja races. It's not a motocross bike, has a motocross engine but set up for both. Basically, it's a unadulterated wr450f with a little stiffer suspension. Everybody and their brother has a wr450f sumo with no issues. In Austraila, yamaha sells the wr450r street legal.
Yz450fx lovers will automatically give these videos a thumbs down. What a waste of a beautiful bike. Yamaha is probably Shaking their heads right now. 😞
Supermoto is fine as a project for the channel but it's really a waste of time and money. If you put road or 50/50 tyres on that you have basically the same thing as a supermoto but more versatile. Wheel width has more effect on handling than circumference in my experience.
Street bike motovlogger here: I have no experience with dirt, sumo and dual sport. Can you spend a moment describing the difference between super moto and dual sport? Thanks!
Sumo is just a dual sport with street suspension brakes and tires. A dual sport is more tailored to dirt so you will get some knobbies smaller brakes and soft suspension for bumps. Type in drz400s and drz400sm and look at the difference. My profile pic has a dual sport and even have a video of it on my channel
For the love of God, go with a "clip" master link chain. Dirt bikes are about as harsh as you can get on a chain and they all come that way for a reason. Ease of cleaning, rehearing etc..., also on my YZ I made into a SM, I went with the 5" rear so I can use slicks. You will get chain rub!! It will scallop the tire. If you dont mind that then go for it, but think logical. If you will not be "backing it in" where you are really sliding the rear at extreme lean angles. It pointless to go with a 5" rear. Also. It is very wise to run 2 chains. 1 for SM 1 for moto or a dirt wheel. The SM wheel is a 17 so the rear sprocket will be 44-46ish. And dirt will be 48-51 depending on what riding you do. The ratio between the two requires 2 chains. Just dont skimp on the quality. Get an ERT or even an X-ring but they do have more drag.
Alpine says the 5.0 will fit without modification on the YZ. They sponsor pro sumo races and supply wheels to pro riders. Their website even lists the 5.0 for a 2018 ya450f. We'll see. I will use a narrow enduro chain. I might do two chains.
CycleCruza btw they run slicks and the width is different than DOT tires, so a 160 DOT will measure usually measure wider than say a 165 slick (in most cases) but it's not the end of the world. It's a major pain in the ass for tire swaps. You need to remove the chain guide remove the axle suspend the wheel push it all forward remove the rear caliper then you can remove the wheel all while trying to not scratch the rim. It's not like pull the wheel off on a normal MX bike or your WR. A 5" is great for racing but if your aren't, most likely you will regret it. But they are sexy as hell

Ride it on trail or track before you modify it. Honestly seems like a terrible thing to throw a bunch of mods on it before rolling it stock.
"I can't ride my brand new dirt bike because it's not street legal, and I don't want to get it dirty." -CycleCruza 2018
Haha
Lmao!
There will be another five videos of why he still hasn't ridden it yet. How is this guy cheap when he blows money on stupid upgrades for every bike?
Lmfao so true. Only person who buys a brand new dirt bike and lets it sit until he has it registered for the street
@Kevin Mcdonnell damn right. Cant wait to jump on my supermoto
Cycle Cruza no matter what you think, your “hard” at a motocross track is not going to be too hard for the engine break in... your mind will be opened once arrival to the track.
Exactly. Your first time riding motocross is an eye opening experience for somebody who has never done it before.
@@sciencemilitia1853 especially on a 450
@@sciencemilitia1853late late reply but I’ve been riding mild private trails here and there for years, and you are completely correct.
If I love it I'll probably add a yz250f motocross bike to the garage for dedicated MX.
That would be sweet! I used to race a YZ250 2 stroke motocross bike. Great bikes!
@@CycleCruza yz250fx so then you can hit up the trails as well. I am assuming that you will keep the 450 sumo.
break it in on trails and mx track, you'll look like a kid that got his first dirt bike on a mx track.A whole different ball game out there.
Real Talk!
dude stay with spokes man go with alpinas
Go ride it before you modify it. You won't be able to appreciate any mods if you don't know stock.
Amen!! On the Rotella T used it for decades with no problems. Keep up the good work!!

Go take a hike on da trees and mourn the loss of ya baby - the high class tingle
And I never see anyone asking about your gear hehe lol
Nobody does lmaoo
Take it to a mellow dirt trail and break it in . Ride it . It's a dirt bike . Use your van or trailer .
Agee.
As do I agree, especially as you seem keen on some foolery
Buys dirt bike......doesn't ride it on dirt.
Doesn't make sense, I suggested he got a 2019 crf450l, factory street legal, 6 speed, 2xs the oil capacity, Honda reliability, still a beast
The 450l isn’t available yet plus the euro bikes that have been out for years already literally kicks the shit outta Honda. We don’t know how reliable the 450 will be since it’s a new production model
Id get the Alpinas
I love you cyclecruza but just keep it as a dirtbike cuz u already have the Yamaha.
I have to try sumo for the channel, I 'm curious to see if it's better than dual sport. Also, in the winter the MX parks shut down for the season so it will be nice to hit streets in the winter in sumo trim.
@@CycleCruza well no matter what the choice I'm still watchin
@@CycleCruza I hope you do sumo it. I think it will be a good experience. I even resubscribed.
Can't wait to see the build dont leave us hanging i know we all want to see this build
Why dont you put footage of you using your trailer and bringing it to a local track or trails so we can atleast see you ride it
I have to break her in first and do the first oil change before hitting the mx track as stated in the video. Also, I'm waiting for my Sidi MX boots to arrive. I would rather mod it clean first.
Better at talking.
@@kosta16auto 😂😂😂😂
"I ain't messing with the front no more.". I don't blame you
CycleCruza ,It's a 450, the only change it needs is your riding skills, not your sprockets.
CycleCruza,
I enjoy your videos! You promote riding and riding safety so well, I bought a new Yamaha MT07 last week! Awesome bike. Already put 200 miles on it this past weekend. I seem to be the only one in my area not squiding! One dude was on a sport bike with flip flops and a tee shirt! LOL!
Thanks! Congrats on the new bike! The MT07 is a great bike. Ride defensively and have fun! Best of luck to you buddy!
For any Australians here, Delo 400 is a great cheap but quality motorcycle oil- along the same line as Rotella. Plenty of zinc. About 100AUD for a 20L drum.
Ed grabs a cup of coffee and watches CycleCruza's channel. awesome video.
1. Buy the Alpinas
2. Buy a chain without O-Rings DID Chain, they are alot thinner and the maintenance is higher but you wont ride it alot (as the wr)
3. You can get a spacers for the sprocket which helps to get the chain a bit more away from the tire
4. you can offcenter a spoked wheel to the right side
If you do all of this or atleast offcenter or buy spacers for the wheel and a thinner chain you will have 0 problems with chain rub.
Cycle cruza the type of guy who just buys the bikes to have them sitting
Even if it isn't street legal, you have a trailer, take it to a MX track or ORV area and go play in the dirt.

Trailer it to the track and trails.
*FYI - Long Term Review of these DIY Tubeless Warp 9 Wheels:* ruclips.net/video/zPapaiYuzRc/видео.html
I tried to tell you... If you had gotten the KTM you’d have a better bike, and you would have been riding from day one...
iron monkey LMAO!
The yz 450 can easily keep up with the KTM 500
it is still your experience and preference, KTM may be a better bike for that purpose but for CC is all about dealership support and reliability, I stay with Yamaha because they have been #1 in reliability for a long time, there are dealerships everywhere near me, and for the bikes I have, I only have to do very little maintenance and the one time I had an issue, the fix was free of charge (dead battery) no they didn't charge it, they gave me a new one.... so to each his own but if KTM had bigger dealership support maybe he would have bought that one, that still doesn't make KTM as reliable as Yamaha, and finally, you can mod any vehicle to be better than others, in other words, he can mod that Yamaha to be unbeatable by a KTM in the same class modded as well, it is just how much money and time you want to spend to get better stats. At the end of the day it is all about having fun, there is always going to be someone better than you.
KTM is the best.
Excell rims, eagle hubs.

have no idea why you didn't buy a ktm or husky 450 much better bikes.
Youre making a mistake if you dont go ride some real off road and motocross before you sumo that bike!! I love this channel and I can't wait to see how you take on the challenge motocross!!
My guy we want you to ride it on the dirt bro ..... I honestly don't care about the mods just go shred in the dirt forget the streets 😭
And this is keeping you from putting it in the back of the van and Hauling it up to the trails how?
Supermoto yessssssssss! They are fun as hell, like having a light nimble dirt bike you can throw around, but able to do it on the street.
Oh yeah, good move going with the super moto! I am waiting to see how it turns out for sure.
I’m totally confused with what your doing with this bike. You could have got a Husky or KTM with emissions and if you wanted more hp there are different avenues to go through which isn’t much work or buy a Beta and you’re good to go. All legal anywhere in the US, what you did seems ass backwards and you can’t ride it on the street in some areas.
man id be chomping at the bit to ride it
Why is the maintenance so often on this bike but not in the 250 version? Have you been following Vegas romaniac?
HOW TO MAKE ANY DIRT BIKE STREET LEGAL: ruclips.net/video/SIqULuhxoXA/видео.html
Alpina makes some serious hardware. Tubeless spoked is the way to go.
Just drop the rear from 50 teeth to 45 or 43 and it should make it better for street use it shouldn't compromise the dirt ability too much if you still have a 13 front. I have 14/45 on my DRZ 400 and it does great on road and off
I use 13/47 on my wr250r and it's perfect for street and off-road.
It's gonna get dirty if I go off road.
you must be new, we'll give you a pass.
Just get the Alpina. I suggest 16x3.5 for the front and 17x5.5 on the back, maybe Borrani style! I don't think switching constantly from supermotard to enduro is a good idea!
I have a 2007 YZ450F supermoto with a 17x5 rear wheel 160/60/17 tire no fitment or chain rub issues
Whats your opinnion of a ninja 250r for a first bike, because i cant decide between the ninja and an 08 wr250r
What did you end up doing with the output shaft on the 250r?
Nice video and I look forward to the build.
@CycleCruza i know im late to the game but if i get the drz 450 and put supermoto wheels on it is it officially streetable or will i need to do something to the transmission??
Get excel rims on talon hubs dont get junk rims
Who makes them? I want tubeless tho, F tubes! If you get a flat with sumo tire with a tube you have to get a tow, you can swap tubes like you can with dirt wheels. The only tubeless spoke wheels is made by Alpina.
CycleCruza i didnt know they had tubes since my bike came with Rexfelgen rims (owned by excel) and my rims are tubelles
Alpinas are used by all the SM pros in S1.
"I am going to ride it hard at the track". If that's the case, bring a second set of pants and boxers with you cause that bike will cause poo to come out the first time you ride it on dirt. Seriously just break it in on the track.
damn..wtf supermoto why dude.
Its a dirt bike. ride it in the dirt!
I'm doing both dirt and sumo! Actually, a lot of the pro SX/MX riders rider sumo as well. Here is a video of James Stewart riding a sumo at a race track: ruclips.net/video/Uyf941Ag13U/видео.html
I used to talk shit about it too but I will try it as my viewers requested!
Ride it on a trail. Is there ohv trails there??
What are you gonna do with your 250 dual sport?
Supermoto is fine as a project for the channel but it's really a waste of time and money. If you put road or 50/50 tyres on that you have basically the same thing as a supermoto but more versatile. Wheel width has more effect on handling than circumference in my experience.
Did you sell it or sent it to get fixed? That's what I originally ment to say.
If you was going street should got wr valves go forever before needing serviced and like 5000 miles before oil change
how often do you have to change pistons on it ?
CycleCruza yes it fits but when the chain moves it goes over and scallops. I had wheel custom built for my YZ. It will scallop but it will "FIT"
Be aware of the wider rims making your standard width tire a little wider.
Tubeless? WTH. He's gone and lost it.
I WANNNNNA SEEE SOME SSSLLLIDE ACTIOOOON
i put some VMX 17" wheels on my ktm exc 125 and got no chain rub at all
