What I hear is is a wonderful artist near death giving her best knowing it isn't at all what she used to be like. She still has musicianship and some notes, but the glorious vocal quality is gone. But she still had to sing because it was her nature to do so. I think she knew a lot about living and giving.
Caballé died exactly 4 months later to the date of this appearance. She just wanted to sing and have fun. She gave us more performances in her prime than anyone else in opera history.
You can hear her age and that makes it much more special i lived with my nan and yes 100% things dont always age the best but sometimes its the history in the voice that is much more impressive.
I just ”found” opera again a few years ago - and her just a few months ago. She was wonderful. My favorite soprano ever. It is clear that she lived the music and it makes all the difference. And that voice and that tecnique. Speechless every time. And she seemed such a lovely lady! I miss her … the opera world is not the same. All the greatest stars have gone. 🥺 If there is a merciful God (I believe so but there are times I doubt things), she is singing in heaven now. Rest in peace, maestra. We miss you. 🕊️❤️
Exceptionnel pour une cantatrice de cet âge ! Même s'il y a quelques "faiblesses", n'oublions pas qu'elle doit chanter assise (ce qui est moins aisé), qu'elle a choisi un air court, mais très rapide.
Well... It's Montserrat Caballe and we must at least respect her amazing history. She's the last living (and singing) legendary diva from the "gold age of divas". However, the producers here should have chosen an easier aria. Too fast for her, even the medium notes she couldnt reach.
Marilyn Horne is no longer singing in public, but is still active as a teacher. Remember, Caballe became a star when she replaced Ms. Horne in a 1965 performance of Lucrezia Borgia.
Why? She was 85 and sick. This was her way to say goodbye…4 months later she passed away. But at least she left this world happy. That is what matters the most. The fans were grateful to see her one more time. They (and she as well) were fully aware of the fact that it wouldn’t be the same - she couldn’t sing like she used to 30 years earlier. Or even 10 years earlier. But they didn’t care. It was not the point.
With all due respect for this great lady, why did she keep going out in these engagements in such advanced age? This must have been something she really wanted to do. It just seems so risky to her health and well being.
Montserrat had 10 surgeries of which 7 major between the years of 1963 - 1974 as with having had 2 children and a miscarriage. In 1977 her husband had heart attack that was to end his operatic career (tenor). These were her very peak years singing! To her later years in her early 50s, Caballe had a pituitary growth which required treatment; cancer that was not completely removed; she called 'my little friend'. She had 2 falls where her limp showed the leg healing never was correct. Car accident were breaks she sang. The public never knew of all her medical issues and were never made to public. Only bits with cancellations such as La Scala when her kidney was bleeding out. Press reported back pain. She said, "the music is like vitamins in my veins..." When she and husband learned her daughter, Monsita sang, Montserrat began a whole new joy of song with her. Freddy Mercury approached her where history of 'Barcelona' placed her home town globally. Loved by so many houses & contemporary singers she continued to sing into her mature years. She sang the Athens Olympic Open with Vangelis "Come March With Me' that even later Vangelis wrote music of the words she wrote, 'Like a Dream'. She launched a rare Cancer Leukemia funding when Jose Carerras in late 1970s was diagnosed; her very good tenor friend that they vocally contracted together in many performances. Montserrat's brother was her agent as Carerras even Domingo a length of time. She launched funding for needy children as she became Childrens' Ambassador. Her home of Liceu Opera house, she funded and launched interest to rebuild when this famed opera house burned to the ground 1992. She later taught many young aspiring opera singers where she vocally studied her conservatory years & a Caballle Voice Master class and competitions formed. Maestro Mahta asked, "Will you ever stop to sing?" Her reply, "I dont understand the question." Prima Donna told of being very poor growing up that this she could not forget. So her glorious voice that so stopped many by her extraordinary depth of command gave a definitive poussar within her control of fiats, pianissimo and those floating high notes with a sweet humility of kind endless pleasure. She knew and we all knew what is the call to step down from the full scale opera performance. Uniquely, Caballe was destined to be where she showed. Those years of her 1960s 1970s and even risks onto early 1080s, she knocked many of performances out of the park. That would be as Carnegie Hall when she stepped in for Horne in 1966, she became an over night in expected fame of global contracting. I still listen in awe and am wondering how unbelieveable. With a concert in Russia with her daughter having had a stroke and flown back to Spain would seem to end all her commitments. Yes and no, but this is of her last. Some persons are just destined to be with us a short yet wondrous period. How glad and grateful. I adore this great lady. I am still richer in my life to hear a great singer. 🌹 I am glad you asked. Further. You have an excellent ear of opera voice, too. Best to you.
performing at this age is a nice and lovely thing for fans who just love a certain singer. but hands down. this is not good at all. if this wasn't caballe, people would shout her off the stage. i respect and cherish it if people enjoy their all time favorite singer being around for a prolonged period of time. but musically and vocally this is pretty awful. and i do admire caballe. her sweet and funny character, her vocal abilities when she was younger. but come on. this is not good. not even "for her age". i respect and admire her achievements. that's not the point. i love her. but when people go crazy saying omg this is so good and she still has it....no. she doesn't. and it's not good.
If you are going to be at 85 being ill and in a wheelchair…singing for 50 years++ and sing in every way you can…then you will have the right to criticise her!
@@OperaMyWorld I understand what you mean. Doesn't change my point. And I not so much mean to criticize her, but the people who scream how fantastic she is singing here. She isn't. Ofc she isn't. She's 85 here. It is supremely rare that people that age still sing well.

Montserrat at 85 still sounds pretty damned good to me!!!
John Rudolph Better at 85 than many of the current so called opera stars. So pleased to see that she was still appearing and being applauded.
