  • Political correctness is killing comedy. So says one of the all-time greats, Jerry Seinfeld, in an interview with The New Yorker. Is he right? We ask Charles Adler and our live audience (24:07). Later in the episode, Jason Leslie of the Alberta Chambers of Commerce has his Eye on Alberta Business - taxes and electricity costs in particular.
    5:30 | Presented by Tice Automotive Consulting, Charles Adler gives us his take on Governor Kristi Noem's book passage about meeting North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un (!), Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's "fib" about the renewables moratorium (13:14), and Seinfeld's comments about the state of stand-up comedy in 2024.

    Comedians can say whatever they want and the consumer has the choice to turn it off or not go see it. It's market capitalism and as long as it doesn't get someone hurt, the market will tell comedians what works and what doesn't. Maybe Seinfeld isn't selling anymore. 🤷🏼‍♀️. He got a lukewarm response at Billy Joel's live concert, so maybe we're just not that into him anymore.

    Glad to see younger people paying attention, I tend to apologize to any young people I run across for the sorry situation we've left the planet and politics in. As I've said, the best political youtubes I've seen are from a couple of 14 year olds.
    This I suspect is a 'filler' show, which is fair enough, too much talk about government can wear you out or scrape you raw. The irony is that I've watched youtube comedians, mostly women, but some trans, and they are hysterical. Thats the thing about comedy, its a WIDE variety. Seinfeld is simply padding his show, his comedy is SO innocuous that its not going to offend anybody. His last special he was talking about CELLPHONES. Oooo, take that Sansung!
    MOST american comedy is hitting down below the belt. Either sarcasm at stupid people, or just laughing at stupid people. You can call that 'imperial comedy'. The eighties was full of it. Then there is the comedy that is 'subversive', which is a lot of standup, and occasional movies, the best being Life of Brian. But Blazing Saddles is right up there. Galaxy Quest was taking the stuffing out of scifi, but the studio wouldn't even let them show the engineer as a pothead, this is TWENTY YEARS after studios refusing to show Dr. Johnny Fever coming out of a closet and brushing pot smoke away (its on the DVDs).
    For standups a little advice is that George Carlin was NEVER censured by anybody for shitting all over america. Self deprecating humour and humour at your own demographic is safe too. But outside that has ALWAYS been off limits in comedy. Seinfeld himself says he censured his joke about black people on the roller coaster, and said he did that THIRTY years ago, realizing that a middle class jewish guy going "whats uuuUUP with black people" just wasn't going to sell and likely would get him beaten up. HE admitted that thirty years ago.
    If he did a joke about creepy millionaire comedians picking up dates at high school then I don't think anybody would complain, although they probably wouldn't laugh either. "Whats uuUUp with jailbait?" And to be politically incorrect, you have some competition from a podcast called 'the line',which has the added benefit of an attractive lady as guest host. Thats right, I said it!

      Carlin was arrested on disorderly conduct charges at Milwaukee Summerfest in 1972 for performing his classic bit “Seven Words You Can't Say on Television.”. The same comedy bit became a landmark Supreme Court Case that ruled the bit was indecent but not obscene.
      And The Line is a horrible podcast with 2 far right wing extremists yapping and agreeing with each other.

    If Hollywood came out with a satire of Jesus and the ressurection in the vein of a Borat sort of comedy, the religious right would completely lose their minds and try to cancel it. It would be hilarious if there was a comedy where Jesus is coming down to do the rapture, but bumps his head and has amnesia. And just goes around America like Borat

    I hate the term "punching down" it implies that someone is inherently beneath or lesser than another person in order to be punched "down" upon. If you truly believe that all people are equal, then the entire concept of punching down simply cannot exist.
    Putting any specific group of people on an untouchable pedestal is supporting inequality.
    Comedy is art. Like any form of art, if it doesn't suit you or entertain you, don't consume it. But don't impose your value system on others and try to have something removed or banned. That's incredibly immature and selfish.

    • @JonathanSicoli
      @JonathanSicoli 15 дней назад

      Honestly, 'all people are created equal' is a far cry from 'all people are treated equally.'
      That being said, people tell funny jokes about so-called 'lesser' people, and those people can enjoy them. What is happening here is, people are telling jokes that are just 'this is something I find weird' and expecting laughter from a certain audience.
      I watched a bit of the Daily Wire's latest knockoff of Family Guy, and it felt more like their earnest beliefs, and bullying of people they didn't understand or chose not to. Frankly, it's lazy - sure, you CAN tell jokes like that, but you can't make someone laugh at them.

      I'd say a lot of conservative comedy lately depends on imposing their values on an unsuspecting audience. I say this because I've watched Ladyballers, and they had like .. two jokes I laughed at.

    Some comedians just suck, and Rosanne Barr is a perfect example of how much they can suck. You're either a good comedian or you're a hack. And Seinfeld's new movie is horrible, lasted 10 minutes and I was huge fan of his show (when it aired), his style and delivery are super outdated. The right in general are an outdated, old fashioned bunch, trying to relive a past that needs to stay in the past. Bring back classic, vintage and traditional, sure, but leave that other stuff behind.

    • @JonathanSicoli

      It honestly seems like the 'edgy comedy' bros are more interested in being able to use comedy as a coercion tool than they are actually worried about censorship. Otherwise, they wouldn't be behind modern day book bans like Maus, or anything with a whiff of LGBTQ depiction in it.
      I honestly believe some people think they deserve an exclusive right to 'cancel culture,' and are offended that the left can use it too.

  • @dmaertz1
    @dmaertz1 26 дней назад +3

    Seinfeld was never truly funny. He just punched down at people. His style was mean humour. True comedy is being able to punch up and be relatable to most, not just those who would love to be able to say the mean stuff out loud. His niche has passed its best before date and he’s upset about it.

    20:21 lol the drug dealers in BC think the NDP are great for buisness there.
    Dav Chappel is a perfect example of what Jerry is talking about. Yes no doubt some parts offensive to trans. And no doubt blockbuster specials. And finally, no doubt, a mob is trying to pressure netflicks to remove from his comedy special, or change his comedy.
    Nobody needed to remove Andrew Dice Clay in the 90s, tho they did try lol.

    • @JonathanSicoli

      You'd be surprised at what they tried to do to Carlin. A lot of it was speaking about anti-authority, anti-schooling - Post-Red Scare, people got really upset by that kind of thing.
      Additionally, some people have written comic books about heavy topics. These days there's a concerted effort to get them removed from libraries for 'indecent content.' Look up 'Maus.'
      It may be comedians' jobs to get authoritarians upset at them. But this stuff isn't exclusive to the 'extreme far double punch buggy left,' by any means.
