    I've been using and abusing the Kobalt for about 2 years. I used it every single day, never leave home without it. However, after seeing the video about the Milwaukee about 2 weeks ago I went out and bought it just because of the screw driver. It may seem silly but it has already come in handy a hand full of times.
    I will say the opening action doesn't feel different to me, I can pull either one out of my pocket and open it in one smooth action. I actually prefer the clip on the Milwaukee though, it feels stronger. My Kobalt clip is stretched pretty bad and doesn't grip my pocket anymore, I believe the Milwaukee will hold up a little better over time.

      I did the same thing. Iv had my kobalt for years and then when the milwaukee knife came out with a screw driver bit built in i bought one. Unfortunately mine does not feel the same when opening or closing the button is alot stiffer and harder to fully release. The belt clip is to hard and stiff to quickly put it in my pocket i usually had to use 2 hands which is not cool.. Also it doesn't fully open and lock properly about 3 out of 10 times. I don't know if I got a faulty one who knows but iv never had any issues with my kobalt I have been using for almost 5 years now Nothing is wrong with it except for the fact the handle is made out of nylon which hasn't been a problem really at all except the end of it is a little chewed up from opening 5 years worth of beers 🤣

    As a construction worker I like the newest kobalt speed release the best. It doesn't have wire cutters but I don't ever need to cut wires so that's fine for me, the release action is smooth as butter, it has the 3 blade storage in the back and feels great in hand. And the knife and 10 blades come with it for only $15. However for an electrician I think Milwaukee is better. It all just depends on what you need it to do.

    The Kershaw Select Fire (1920) is basically the pocket knife version of this tool and I love it. It's nice having the screwdriver/nut driver built in so you don't have to use your blade as a screwdriver, and it holds 4 standard size bits while the Milwaukee has the extra long double ended bit that would be harder to replace. The Milwaukee looks like a great option for a utility knife though.

    Yeah I use to deliver appliances at lowes ironically and bought that same knife one Black Friday in a combo pack with another kobalt pocket knife. That knife was my number 1 tool delivering appliances because of the amount of cardboard we cut in a day, and it never let me down once. Still have the knife to this day and use it on occasion being a lineman now. Only 2 complaints I have is once in a while the button will get really weird feeling when pressing it, like a spring of metal wires behind it are getting tangled, but spinning the button fixes it. Other complaint is the clip would often get bent catching on random things though the day, but my channel locks quickly bent it back into shape.

    Having used them all on a daily basis for years(plumber), I now consistently buy the red tool shop version.(menards).Main reason is the price and size. Its cheap and small. It works just fine and Menards replaces it free, I take it in when the screws start loosening. Price is a major consideration for me because this is the tool I lose the most! It also opens smooth after about a week or so, out of the box it wont though.

    The thing that sucks about Milwaukee is they don’t sell a replacement bit. They know the bit holder will loosen up over time and it will fall out. So why don’t they either use a detent ball on the bit, or sell a 5-pack of replacement bits? Either it’s shabby engineering, or Milwaukee is hoping we’ll lose the bit and have to replace the whole knife. I hope some other manufacturer copies their knife, but with a better clip and bit!

    I just picked up a set of 3 Kobalt knives. It comes with one of these and two compact versions. I agree that they are pretty nice, however the QC is inconsistent. Some are oiled up and operate smoothly, some not. Some have a pretty tight blade, while some have some wobble. I think I'll need to open them up and rectify that.

    It usually comes down to personal preference. I’ve used the kobalt for about 3 years, works great,only issue is the pivot bolt getting a little loose, easy fix. As long as it cuts without the blade coming out and getting stuck in card board or whatever your cutting without one noticing !! Safety first ! All we need now is an automatic ! Thanks for reviewing both for us. Cheers🍻

    Just got the FB Gen II (100% 'cause of ur video, thank you, very happy). Don't have the Kobalt, but from what I hear you say, I prefer:
    Kobalt Pros:
    * Blade Eject
    * Blade Stripper & Hand Stripper (sound like the back rooms @ a Detroit titty bar)
    * Flush Butt Clip (this one too)
    * $10 Price Tag (last time, lol, this one too)
    FB GII Pros:
    * "Blade Storage"
    * ¼" Hex Driver (Deal Maker for me)
    * Thinner Body
    * Rounder, More Ergonomic Body
    * Lanyard
    Sounds like both have a 4¾⭐ quick release & as far as the bottle opener, if you can't open a bottle w/ ANY flat hard object, you probably shouldn't be using a knife unsupervised. For me tho, the ¼ Hex seals the deal: FB Gen II for me.
    Keep up the great content. RNL!

    I was part of the 5% on the last video. I appreciate this video. It always depends on what you do. I buy 20-30 kolbolt knives at a time when I can get the price at $8. Let’s be far I will break both of them. I buy commercial blades already in a plastic pack that are in my pocket. I usually have 3 knives each with a different blade in my pocket. Size matters. The slot on the kolbolt when the knife is open is fantastic at accepting lvt or lvp to use as a leverage for a snap. I do flooring, meaning I live or die with a knife. I don’t just cut boxes open and drink. Now for the most part brands matter to me. It’s the evolution of who has the best patients on the tool. You can’t beat the Milwaukee hole saw nor saw zaw. The fien, dominants the vibrators. Every brand has their flagships. But now every brand is also making cheap knock offs. Model numbers are key. Box store are making it almost impossible to buy tools.

    • @tileslay6543
      @tileslay6543 3 года назад

      And you made a fantastic point on the way the blade is held in! This is the true deciding factor on longevity. Cover both knives in mortar and glues. Easiest to clean and remove the blade from multiple times it’s the lever. If you are really pushing and using these knives the button will fail allowing the blades to come out. This happens on the kolbolt but about twice as long the life. Dewalt knives had the same push button and that’s what failed before the knive failed. This is only for those who really need knifes.

    Can you please do a comparison on the 2 compact versions of these? There is a compact Kobalt speed release now. I currently own the 1901 fastback and the gerber eab and eab lite.
    I have no need for extra gadgets or bulk; no need for wire strippers or rope cutters.
    The issue for me is my work primarily involves fast paced box cutting between tasks so my blade is getting pocketed constantly and the smaller and faster deployed the better. But I also infrequently, but frequently enough, have to cut very thick large 3X corrogate displays which require the best grip possible. That's where the gerber falls short on grip and the full size fastback is overkill with its bulk and gadgets that I have no use for at work.
    Does the Kobalt speed release compact have better grip and less blade play than the milwaukee fastback compact? And which has a slimmer profile?
    Losing my cutter, needing gadgets, or extra blades on hand is never an issue.
    For me it's all about light, not bulky, great grip when needed, and a blade with little play.

    - better ergonomics on handle
    - screwdriver & bit included
    - 1 extra blade storage
    - jimping for thumb placement for hard downward cuts (very important)
    - of course, bottle opener / paint lid remover.
    I think you get the idea. Kolbalt is a decent cutter & I let my teen son use this for projects, if you get what I mean.... ; )

    I saw your review on the Milwaukee. Loved the comparison. Seen this one, again a nice comparison. I haven’t needed one as two years ago, I bought several of the Husky (2 for me and 4 as gifts). They have easy blade change, safe storage for 4-5 blades, comfortable, sturdy, light, and lock tight in straight out, 45 and 90 degree angles. Best of all they came 100 blades and cost 9.98. Still work like new so you’re right. They are just right for me and us who use them. All are very good and it’s just preference as all would fit on my bench, in my pocket or pack out. Side note: thanks to the derecho we had in august, needed a new roof and had to ask for my husky back from a roofer who tried it and likes it better than his kobalt, lol. Preferences and options, thank goodness we have them and don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. Appreciate everything you do. Happy Thanksgiving, stay safe all.

    Do any of the utility knife blade designs have a zero contact blade retainer so the inside edge maintains its razor sharpness throughout the use of the exposed half? With any of these quick release designs, it seems that hard use will put pressure on the inner blade area and dull it before you use it.
    I'd think the only way to secure the blade without using the inner blade edge as a brace would be a clamp arrangement.

    Things the fastback also has (Don't think I saw this on here or the other vid).

    The blade also has the scoring cutout to place your tape measure in.

    I use the simpler Milwaukee 1501 - no screwdriver no extra blade. It is more compact and comparing them in the tool shop I went for the thinner model because it fits just right in my pocket. I also like it because it screams tool as opposed to weapon which tends to keep the pantywaists from wetting themselves. The Kobalt is interesting, but the Milwaukee is superb. Just used it to install vinyl plank flooring and it worked well.just the best utility knife I’ve ever owned.

    I use the mini version of that for edc and i find its better than the mid sized one because the head is heavier so it flips open quicker but the overall weight of the knife is lower and more durable. Also the button is a little bit bigger so it makes it easier to use with gloves on

    So about the blade storage on the Fastback. Its perfectly safe, You have to think order of operations. If you are accessing it its becasue you are changing your blade out right? So you remove the blade you were using first, then you get the blade out of the storage. Simple

  • @stanjuan1178
    @stanjuan1178 Год назад +1

    Couple things.
    1) I didn't know my knife had a blade storage slot. FRIGGIN COOL BEANS. I actually like this even more now. Is it a "Well thought out" solution? I mean, honestly it could have been done a bit better, I actually sort of damaged the sharpness of the spare blade in a spot trying to put it in. But the fact that you have a spare at all is good no matter what. I do like how little real estate it takes up however. Basically, its the same size as the blade, no more no less. I think that's actually better than the previous version that took up a lot of room for the sake of a single blade. I like this solution better on the whole. While the spare is a bit of a pain to get in and out, I don't see it as being a safety issue at all. Just pull the old blade out of the knife first. It's a non issue. And honestly, It doesn't really matter that much to me that the spare blade solution is a bit of a pain. It's not a feature that you use every single day. I can deal with it once a month (or even less if I'm being honest). Having a spare blade there when you really need it trumps it's implementation flaws.
    2) not gonna lie. I hate the wire clip. I mean A lot. I have a husky with a wide metal clip that lips into my pocket super easy and it stays put with out any issues. Actually, that wooden handled husky is one of my favorite knifes. I bought the Milwaukee specifically for the driver bit. But man that wire clip sucks. A Lot.
    3) While the "Fast Back" flick blade is nice, it works, works well. In my opinion it's not any better than the thumb flip on my Husky. I don't know, maybe for the style of knife the milwakee is, the fast back is a better option in its case. In fact, yea, I think that may be the case. The fast back works well in this case. But I honestly wouldn't want that on my Husky. I can kind of take it or leave it. I didn't buy the Milwaukee for that option. But as it works, it's not hurting anything.
    4) The driver is why I bought the Milwaukee. that's just dead handy. And something people seem to miss is that if you remove the bit, it also works as a hex head driver of,,,, what quarter inch? I mean this is basically the exact same thing as on a Kline 10 in 1 driver. Nobody seems to mention the hex driver as one of the 6 in 1 options on the Milwaukee.
    In the end, there are some improvements that could be made. The blade storage could be honed a bit to make it more better. But on the whole, id much prefer to have it there in it's current form than either not at all or in a bulky form like the previous model. I wish the plastic handle was either powder coated aluminum or a nice wood. Actually, I'd probably buy both versions. While the red is ok,,, it's Milwaukee after all, a wood color and maybe a black and blue and red aluminum option would be nice. There is no EXCUSE for the wire clip. That's just a terrible thing and really detracts from an otherwise really well done knife. It's a pain in the fringing azz to get in my pocket. They seriously missed a trick on that. Change the clip to a flat metal clip that slides in your damn pocket. The wire clip and other small nit picks aside, I like the Milwaukee as an every day carry for it's utility. I still like my stealth Gerber blade and my wood grained husky for goin to town though.

    I don’t like the style that requires you to lift up to release the blade. When I cut sheets of things like plastic, my thumb is up there and if I slide it back to adjust my grip, the material grabs the blade and pulls it out of the knife.

    Kobalt knife is good, at least till you use it some. After a couple drywall jobs the blade catch that you like better allows the blade to slide out somewhat and it becomes wedged in place. It’s even allowed the blade to come out completely...not very safe. Got one of the Milwaukee fastbacks after watching your first vid on them and so far, hands down a better utility knife. Keep up the great reviews!

    Here's my take. I watched both videos. I'm not debating the quality of the Milwaukee. Knowing Milwaukee, the tool is unquestionably top shelf. I personally wind up having to replace utility knives a lot for a variety of reasons. not just because they tear up. In my case, they're usually gone way before they tear up. The problem that I have with the Milwaukee is that a Utility Knife has a value, and the Milwaukee has exceeded that value to me by over double. In my case, a $10 dollar utility knife works just fine. Since they get lost or taken at job sites well before I tear them up. I view the Utility Knife as expendable. I'm not going to pay a bunch of money for a tool that could be gone next week, and will definitely be gone before I break it. I rarely tear up even the cheapest Utility Knife. For that reason, the Kobalt wins. You really did a great tool review. They're Real NassLike. I'll likely purchase a Milwaukee Fastback for my shop at home because things are different at home than they are for me at a job site. I'll be getting a few Kobalt's for work. If I lose the Milwaukee at home, I'll just find it later. It also definitely won't get stolen at my house.

    The wire clip on the Milwaukee is for bigger seams such as a tool belt witch I can say works fantastic, the clip on the kobalt looks like it will work better in a regular pants pocket where the Milwaukee tends to slip from my experience.

    Ya know, think the logic on the blade storage area on the fastback is that if one were needing to access the spare blade to replace the existing blade, one would first remove the existing blade, thus eliminating any possible chance of one cutting oneself...I think.
