  • This year marks 100 years since the Johor-Singapore Causeway was officially opened. Stretching just over a kilometre, it is a symbol of close ties, bilateral relations and people-to-people connections. With Singapore and Malaysia expected to further improve connectivity and tighten business links, CNA's Leong Wai Kit looks at how the areas at both ends of the Causeway - Woodlands and Johor Bahru - are keeping up with the momentum.

the new RTS demand would probably be maxed out by the time its ready and new transport means would be needed again.

Johor is fully self-sufficient and has all elements of a state. Johor must break away from Malaysia. Singapore has incentive to assist Johor Sultanate and people of Johor to break away from Malaysia.

100 years of problems with the jam still not solved even though millions and millions dollars of taxpayers money pumped in. Time to reclaim land on both sides of the causeway to make it obsolete. This will be a game changer to speed up the flow. 100 lanes each direction. Problem solved.

Woodlands rental rates and property price will be affected by the rise and prosperity of johore. One side of the straits are luxury condos facing Singapore while Singapore have mostly flats dating from the 1980s and 90s facing johore instead. The tides have turned already and i am not gloating here. I am sad and upset for people on the Singapore side instead.

Could've been more I feel - 1 6-car MRT train carries ~1500 pax, so 10000 pax/h equals to this kind of train running only once every 8.5min, which is worse than Singapore's MRT off-peak frequency. Maybe instead of building RTS, we could've extended TEL to WTCP & upgraded Shuttle Tebrau to use KTM Komuter rolling stock (& maybe expand WTCP, & relocate it if not enough space)

This bridge wont survive unchanged for long for much longer after the mrt between Singapore and Johore is completed. The crowd will burst by then and this bridge will not be able to cope under its current design and capacity point. The causeway is way overdue for modern revamp and expansion already but politics and conflict of interests between the two givernment always causes this issue to be brush aside.
