These are the best Alan Menken musicals! It’s hard to rank the works of such a legend, but we’ll give it a shot. For this list, we’ll be looking at the greatest musicals written by Alan Menken, like “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Sister Act”. We’ll also be including Disney movies, so long as they have not been adapted into a stage musical. Hunchback of Notredame has probably one of the best soundtracks of all time. Heaven's light is just so gorgeous, especially the stark contrast with the following hellfire.
The first time my daughters saw Hunchback, the opening song caused both of their jaws to drop. And let's not forget the gorgeous "Out There".

So Menken pretty much IS the Disney Renaissance. I liked Galavant.
Though you've got to give props to the lyricists he worked with, particularly Howard Ashman and Stephen Swartz, and Elton John and Tim Rice for The Lion King.

With some help from Phil Collins and Randy Newman, Hans Zimmer, and Jerry Goldsmith. But mostly it was Menken, and whichever lyrics he was teamed up.
There's also some other great songs from Hunchback animated. Like "Bells of Notre Dame", "Topsy Turvy", and "God Help the Outcasts".

Hercules one was my favorite because it had that nice Superman origin story.

Ah, so he did BOTH Enchanted and Tangled? Both also underrated soundtracks. I See the Light is gorgeous, Mother Knows Best is epic, True Love's Kiss is hilariously self-aware, and How Does She Know is so fun and happy! Alan Menken has the skills to orchestrate musical range of envy, that's for sure! Though maybe there was a funny hindsight moment at Disney headquarters & with Menken when Idina Menzel's voice was all over the place after Frozen and raking in $ for Disney; they had her as an important side character in Enchanted and she didn't get a song lol.
Funny Side note: The Rapunzel/Eugene dynamic is the animated counterpart to the live-action Giselle/Robert dynamic. You know I'm right :)
Menken also does all the great songs in "Tangled: The Series."
@@Compucles Unfortunately, that show isn't legally available where I live (Canada) :/ And Disney is very quick to take down pirated streams of any for their shows. I'd love to see it though!
Congrats to Menken on his EGOT! Well deserved. As a fully grown adult, I can chart a great deal of my life thru his music, as I’m sure many others can as well.
Alan Menken is a living legend
Named dropped only once in this video. Shame Howard Ashman deserves more recognition for the work he did too. The man was literally still writing lyrics and music for beauty and the beast whilst on his death bed.
A far cry from his Disney work in tone, but "Little Shop of Horrors" brought together the power duo of Menken and Ashman (a partnership right up to Ashman's death).
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Also, if you watch The Little Mermaid, you can see Little Shop's influence. The ending to Part Of Your World has the same tune as Somewhere That's Green.
Umm Pocahontas should definitely be in the top 10!!!

My favorite of his work has to be Newsies! The stage version is better than the movie. When I saw Aladdin on tour back in March, Major Attaway was the Genie!

If you followed the whole journey of hunchback musical, you would know that Disney eventually shut down the broadway run because the production required a 18 member choir ( expensive) and they didnt think the dark story would generate the type of return they were looking for especially after Little mermaid didn’t exactly become a hit as they expected. The whole cast was pissed off when they pulled the plug and I believe the guy that played Quasimodo posted some sort of rant about it as well.

I can still sing every song from Hercules, word for word. It was one of my favorite soundtracks, it still is if I'm being honest.

Beauty and the Beast really should have been number 1. Menken and Ashman were really an amazing duo. Too bad about Ashman's early death.

As far as I know, Menken and his team are currently working on a musical version of Hercules. I couldn't be happier and it 100 % deserves a musical rendition since the songs are so good

Alan Menken is a legend , he did all the memorable music from my childhood. He made the Disney Renaissance. Newsies and his other Disney projects are my favorite.
Alan Menken is one of my heroes! The only reason you wouldn't love him is to not know who he is...which is IMPOSSIBLE because he is so iconic

"Hercules" and "Hunchback" have always been at the top of my underrated Disney movies list and "Little Mermaid" was my childhood favorite because Ariel and I were born without the use of our legs

Kinda unpopular opinion, but I prefer the Newsies movie to the Broadway musical. I just preferred the emphasis the movie placed on brotherhood and friendship over the kinda forced romance of the Broadway show. Plus, young Christian Bale singing and dancing around New York with a cowboy hat? Yes please.

It still baffles me to this day to see how underrated the Newsies movie is.
Paper Mill’s production of Hunchback is my all-time favorite stage production. It was mind-blowingly amazing! Its a crime that it hasn’t made it to broadway. Michael Arden’s performance of Quasimodo was Tony worthy.
Newsies is one of my favorite movies of all time. I actually got to see a special preview of the movie before it was released everywhere. I saw it like 3 times in theaters.
My only complaint is when you referred to Little Shop of Horror's as a play
I need to call it... The Hunchback of Notre Dame is an opera. It has continuous music in three defined acts. A masterpiece! (Yeah I know he dies in the book... but it's Disney and it was already way way into the dark...) Little Shop of Horrors is a stage piece that made a good film. A brilliant Musical! That is like Don Giovanni against Die Zauberflote (Might be worth a Google ;) . I reckon it should have been a double A side and a draw... for Menken and Mozart.

Hades?! Really? Hella weird considering he did the singing voice for Hercules. In fact, given that Cheyenne Jackson (Hades in D3) also has a significant theater background, I'm surprised they didn't cast him

Hercules DID have a stage production with Public Works, and Menken wrote a few new songs to add to the show, in addition to all the ones from the movie!

About time Alan Menken gets some respect. He will always be one of my top favorite movie composers of all time.
Fun fact: Angela Lansbury was worried her singing voice had deteriorated too much to be a fit for Beauty and the Beast but was convinced to do a take on the condition that if it wasn't up to snuff they could redub it. Needless to say that woman left the crew in tears in a single take with her beautiful rendition of what would become a classic

In my opinion Hercules is one of the best Disney soundtracks ever. A Star is Born, Go the Distance, Zero to Hero, I Won’t Say I’m in Love 🙌🏽
I miss A Bronx Tale so much. I will never forget being in the audience of Closing Night and meeting Menken at the stage door. Picture and autograph. Will never forget. Hunchback is also my favorite Disney movie and one of my favorite stage adaptations especially since it follows the book better. Plus Patrick Page kills it as Frollo and Micheal Arden was phenomenal as Quasimodo.

This guy is a legend in the musical composition arena. So many of his works from Disney I loved especially Pocahontas and his other works outside of Disney are just as magical. Leap of Faith is awesome too as honorable mention!

They are all incredible and iconic but nothing will ever beat the incredible writing and composition of Beaty and the Beast.
the hunchback musical is my favourite disney to stage adaptation. the way they use the set and their ensemble is phenomenal and Alan menken's music sends shivers through me every time i hear it. plus the added songs like "someday" and "top of the world" are some of my favourite theater pieces.

Only an honourable mention for Pocahontas?!?! The entire score from first note to last is a masterpiece!! It's up there with Beauty and the Beast and Hunchback, but people always forget about it 🙁

Little shop of horrors is a musical I grew up on and I love that it gets the spot light here, but after seeing aladdin on Broadway that comes a close second for me.
You put Little Mermaid low for me and I was like this list is meh... then I saw #1 and I was like "Ya got me good, MsMojo." I approve.

Great list, but seriously...Hunchback rated higher than genuine classics like Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast? And Little Mermaid overall so low? Definitely deserves a solid 2nd place spot.
But since the magical, delightful, wondrous Little Shop of Horrors is in its rightful place at #1, all is forgiven... 😀
Cheryl Bunyan Hunchback is much more ambitious than any other Disney movie he composed. The choral accompaniment, alone, is astounding.
Gotta give them credit where credit is due for putting Hunchback in the top 2. He even came to my school when we did that musical.

This might be an unpopular opinion but I think the soundtrack for Home on the range in which also Alan Mencken worked with it very under rated, the movie might not be that good but the music is really good for example just listen to the song “will the sun ever shine again”, because the song it’s beautiful. Again this my personal opinion but I wanted to share it with all of you.
Little Shop of Horrors is what help boost Alan Menken's career, got noticed by Disney and ended up making memorable song after memorable song.

Proud of Your Boy isn't new. It was cut in the movie, then sung in the credits. So fans were thrilled when the song was finally recognized in the musical where it should've been

Hunchback should be #1. Little Shop should be towards the bottom of the list based on music. Pocahontas' music should alone place it towards the top of this list, not just an honorable mention.
