Thank you John! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Chris Erwin hi cris did you make the cart/pi combination?
This is amazingly cool. Really innovative build!
Great vid, man.
Ordered my Pi zero a few days ago, got the rest of my components together and ready to start building.
Keep up the good work!
I died when he said he didn't pay for winrar yet ha.
Hey Riggs, I've been building these into old consoles and cartridges for family. I found a couple of settings that will more than likely address the lag issues you're experiencing, speed up the initial boot process, and help the SNES Star Fox run much more smoothly. If you're interested.
This thing is amazing, dude!
thanks for a great video of the retro pi 😊
Always amazing content and creations. John, you're an awesome Gaming genius. Love the channel and all your content. Hope you have a Great Sunday n great start to the new week
Since I saw this on your Instagram Feed (or was it Twitter?), been waiting for you to talk about this!
Looks awesome! I only wish I had to know how (or the connections) to make something this cool.
Dude... I've been trying to think of the name of that cereal for YEARS! Thank you!!! Hahaha.
HOLY MOLY RIGGS! That's so cool man. I want one for sure!
The lightning symbol actually means that you power supply isn't good enough. ;) I had the same with my Rapsberry Pi 3 when using a 2,1A power supply. Problem was gone when I switched to a 5V 3A power supply.
Interesting video by the way, good job! :)
And having an underpowered power supply can negatively affect gameplay, especially on more demanding games (like the CD based platforms you're messing with). Try it again with a better PSU, and work on the airflow so it won't overheat (a slot fan behind the Pi and a few venting holes in the faceplate should do it, really). That should give you a better overall experience.
How did you get the super neat finish of the connectors at the bottom? I saw other flavors of this, but the had the bottom part fully opened, you have a nice grey piece of plastic with the opening cut out. Interested to see how you achieved that. :)
Luc Desormeaux any response?? I'm super curious too. 👍🏽
John, you've just stepped into the raspberry pi abyss. I bought one a couple of weeks ago and now I own three. I can't stop playing with them. Wait until you play around with Lakka, kodi, and Attract Mode.
where did the builder get the snazzy mouthplate around the connectors? i need a few.
I think they made you this question what version of pi you got?
You can have folders inside folders, I use folders to contain all my multidisc ps1 and dreamcast games. It'll show the game name as a slightly different color then you can launch the ISOs (or roms) from within.
So can it actually load games off a flash drive with them stored on it or does it have to be from its internal memory?
Is there less lag when playing games from a usb thumb drive as opposed to the sd card? Thanks
Have you looked at hooking a harddrive up to the pi?
Circa 15:10 you speak about lag. Is the lag due to the emulator or is it due to your display's refresh rate? Maybe software + the type of display used? Btw, what kind of display are you using? I just bought a bunch of Raspberry Pi 3 B parts and noticed that it the board utilizes a 4-pole RCA output, which makes it compatible with a lot of CRT displays. Have you tried using a CRT to see if your input lag would be reduced?
Hi love your videos . Defiantly one of my fav Chanel's . I just bought a super famicom and it came with 20 games . I knew they would be in Japanese when I bought it . Is there a way to remove the region lock without having a repro?
Happy holidays to you and your family .
So it looks very similar to what CoinOps runs on the original
Xbox, albeit via HDMI. Is there a way to have 3-4 players?
thanks for the viddeoe and sharing the inforamtion with us mate thumbs up !! jsut a qestion dos 8bitdo controllers would work withthis system setup the why u did and which Raspberry Pi is that in the cartage cos msot of the videos ive seen use a Raspberry Pi 1 but this version looks better and less wires
i need to do this for next project. I love it! I'll make a video as well if i end up doing this!
does it still work, i mean no air circulation etc. is this viable casing for pi in the long run?
Just got a Raspberry Pi in the mail today, setting up my own "nes mini" tonight. .. well hopefully tonight. Pretty tired at this point. maybe tomorrow... lol
I can dig it. Thanks for the like on my pic in the Seattle Retro Gamers group..
i might put mine in a n64 game
how many controlers can be blue toothed at once since most games are 4 players or more and can it play saturn and dreamcast and ps2 and n64 good me and my bros are trying 2 find a way 2 have all in one with arcade etc
quick question when you use raspberry pi zero are you suppose to get sound? I can't get sound:(
That's really cool made out of a cartridge
How Long Will It Take To Dump The ROMs To The Pi?
Besides no mercy, any good wrestling games in there?
This is really cool! But what's with the crazy bloom / blur on all the load screens? Did you try to film a dirty screen in a black, smokey room after setting up your CRT after eating KFC or something?
Is that space ghost in the upper left corner of the label?
hey John I have a pi like yours but all of the games are really choppy. all of them. is there a fix?
Have you tried 7zip? Open source, compatible with zips, rars and darn near everything else. Very similar UI, shell extensions, no nag screens. Its been a very long time since I've been a Windows user, but this is one of my favorite tools.
13:43 wooho~ \o/ Snatcher!
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games
How did he get the cabling like that?
I actually just bought one of these the other week and tried it out. Some of the emulation was a little disappointing but for under $100 this thing does a ton. Would be great to take on the road.
I'm wearing that same shirt today
Lords of Thunder is the best Sega CD made...mostly because the music ROCKS
9:36 don't let this man near my children
Where can I buy one ?
It works with the wii u pro controller too!
really enjoy your videos, I have emulators on our PC, for most systems you showed up the video minus PlayStation
Totally added you because you previewed castlevania 3.
Which version of the Pi is installed in the cartridge? Raspberry Pi 1, 2 or 3? Also, what size SD card is istalled in it? The only reason why I ask is so that I can try to recreate something like this for myself.
vgfan80 Raspberry zero
thank you
I wonder if Chris would make one with a Rasberry Pi 3? That'll make a great gift for my brother!
I actually just made one of these. But I am having some trouble, I can only download NES ROMs, if I try to get Atari or Famicon ROMS they don't work. I Can't even get Kaizo Mario 3 which is for the NES. Do you need something special to get other ROMs, I'm currently just using winRAR.
James Ford you're probably just downloading the wrong format dude. I download them and play fine. maybe just reinstall retropi
this guy rulezzz best guy in the world
Kick, punch it´s all in the mind!!!
You can also set up a samba share for Windows by going to the retropie settings and then tools --> samba share. Then you can go to your Windows PC and press Win + R and type \\RETROPIE then you can load ROMs in the ROM folder directly. I hope its useful for you, greetings from Germany ;)
I want one of these where can I buy one? Send link thanks John
buy a canakit off of Amazon. There's plenty of youtube videos that show you how to set it up. It's easy and can be up and running in a hour.
Def going to have to look into Mario3mix!
Hey, did I miss it - were you going to post something about the roms and the ones you have to do things with the BIOS folders, etc. and the how to?
check out ETA PRIME's channel, he shows you how to do most everything you need.
Thanks. Do they have for macs too? That's what I have.
Do they have what for Macs? The Raspberry Pi is a stand alone computer that you'll plug into an HD televsion. You will need software like WINrar and win32diskimager to set it up though.
That is what I am saying - the videos I see with the software use PCs and Macs don't use the same stuff.
I don't use Macs so I'm not sure which software would be
equivalent, sorry.
I'm a noob here, where's the best place to find roms?
i have got to get me one of these!!!
Where can i buy one !?
where can i buy one?
Forgot to mention that you can transfer roms over your wireless network as well. Turned out to be really easy.
I'm still tinkering with this. I still haven't figured out how to do PC Engine CD games and am always looking for what MAME roms will work, but it's a lot of fun so far!
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Hey John, love the video. Hey listen I don't know if you noticed the ligthning bolt in the corner, but that means your not running enough power to the pi. You need to use a power supply of at least 5 volts and 2400 mA. Otherwise the Pi won't run at full speed. Which means you'll have sound and frame rate issues.
For PC Engine CD you need to place the SYSCARD.PCE bios file in the bios folder. As far as mame goes you have figure out which mame version was ported to your PI and then get a specific romset for that version.
I'll check it out, thanks! syscard.pce in bios...
oh, good to know!

what version of raspberry pi is in this ? I just looked at a raspberrypi3, but it looks too thick.
Spottedfeather nope! That's a pi zero. You have to solider off the USB and network connection to fit a pi3 in a Nintendo case.
Zakk Hollowell not a pi zero. They removed the USB and Ethernet ports
where can I get one
John, you can try to overclock the pi slightly. Even a slight overclock will help with stuttering sound in Snes super-FX games like star Fox and Yoshi's island, plus it'll give a Nice boost for N64 games. Just one thing, though, overclocking the pi will speed up at least starfox a bit, gameplay-wise.
You can actually load games wirelessly if you connect the Pi to your network. That way you don't have to mess with a USB dongle, and it loads a little faster.
Emulation Station INSIDE A NES CART - MUCH BETTER OPTION THAN A NES MINI CLASSIC.
Any idea on how or with what made the bottom part to hide the hole in the conections?
edaledal 3D printed
Eduardo Valenzuela .
Where do you get games to put on the emulator
Zaymond Thatcher Google
The Cart thing is cool, but that Pi is going to overheat. I have one and they run hot as a robot when you run lots of games. In fact, I recommend buying a mini case with a fan off ebay for $6-10. The cooler it runs, the better the game play.
Yep thats why starfox and the n64 games chopped and had sound issues. Also I think he used a rasp pi zero.
Hijynx87 It doesn't heat up too much with 8 and 16 bit games does it?
Hijynx87 that's absolutely, 100% positives a pi3. The Pi zero is a lot smaller and only providers mini-hdmi. The pi3 is alsof a LOT faster! You can't run An N64 game on a pi zero, at least not as smoothie as in the video
I'm actually running Scraper right now. What are the odds?
I haven't done that, yet.
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games I didn't have much luck with the ES built in Scraper. Used Stephen Selph's which worked so well it might as well be magic. Need a little command line but lots of tutorials out there.
I used Selph's tool as well. Took 12hrs to finish cause my slow internet and 28 emulators to go through. It didn't find any PC Engine covers though. I'll probably need to do those individually.
Recalbox
ok so how do I get one?
this is so cool can't were to get one someday untill then I will be very:(
I would love to build one of these but I wish someone sold a USB with everything loaded on it, I don't have a computer to do all the software
Did you try the new fruity pebbles with marshmallows I can't get enough
I don't get why they don't put the hdmi and the power port on the top of the cart and keep the USB on the bottom looks so much nicer that way when it's all set up
Mad little Pixel sent me
Rigg pie
I play my nes snes neo geo pc ect on my galaxy note 3 via emulators. the n64 emulator, I had to play around with it to get it right. only thing I don't like my n64 emulator is that there's no button positioning edits, analog stick is far left and dpad in the middle, very uncomfortable to play games like WWF no mercy.
I want one!!!
yeah free stuff
you need Ninja Baseball Bat Man rom for Mame, best beat em up game for arcade ever!
add a battery and charger, speakers, an lcd panel and a split controller and make this thing portable.
nice
John, use 7-zip instead of winrar, it is free.
Which version of Raspberry Pi is in there?
thecouchtripper
Thanks for the insight but I still would like to know. I'm have a similar setup but with the Pi Zero.
Bernard Manansala i have the zero too but I still cant get neo geo games to run
edaledal put the neo geo bios in the bios folder AND the neo geo folder.
Dane in the usb or in the sd card? Because I dont have how to ger internet access yet.
edaledal When you plug your USB stick into the pi run in retropie for the first time, it will build the appropriate file structure on the USB stick. Plug it in, wait about 3 minutes then remove it and plug it into your computer. Open the Retropie folder, place your neo geo roms and bios into the neo geo folder, then also place the neo geo bios folder into the folder called BIOS. That's how mine is setup and I waste countless hours playing Metal Slug 1 thru X. I very highly recommend checking out ETA Prime here on youtube, super nice dude with great videos for those of us who like using Emulators.
funny how he used a pi 3, instead of a zero and removed usb ports and the Ethernet port. though it does have on board wifi so if you set it up you don't really need the flash drive.
would this cart play in my original nes? ?
no it does not even need the nes, and even if it did no connections to work with the nes
for you, sure, why not.
SILVERMANIA I really hope you're not serious.
I would love to own a game cart like that one but unfortunately bills come first and I can't afford it... So sad ..
Do you have to pay for the games?
no
it's WWF no mercy
too bad retro pie and cartrde are not availble in our country (Philippines) i want one
John and everyone using emulation station, if you want it to look amazing use the "Meta-Pixel" theme and add this so when you boot up a game it looks like the system while it loads retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/4611/runcommand-system-splashscreens . I have used all of this on mine and it looks amazing :D
it's doin its linux thing
which raspberry pi is this one? the first one?
Keith Kueber Raspberry zero
At 2:44 you can see the board. It's a Pi 2.
A Pi 3 is better, but would need cooling.
You might be better off with a Raspberry pi 3 B for ps1/n64 games. What you have here is a raspberry pi ZERO, which is super tiny like keychain sized. It's about as powerful as the rasp pi 1.
where can I buy this and for how much someone please tell me
GameBoii101 same ☺
GameBoii101 Well don't if any one sells them. Mostly you'll have to make it yourself this is the first one I've seen that uses a Pi 2. I've only seen this project built using a Pi Zero, which I've built one for my brother. Keep in mind though if you build one using a Pi zero you will only be able to play up to the 16-bit era and 80's era MAME roms. You'll need a Pi 2 or 3 to go up to PSX and N64 roms.
GameBoii101 *Well don't know if... sorry forgot to add know.
elgigante2001 well how about you make one and I'll buy it from you depending on your price
Well it would depend on the Pi being used inside. The one for my brother has a Pi Zero and it came out to roughly $50 for all the parts. If I were to use a Pi 2 or 3 it may be about $40 to $50, but would be a little hard to set up the usb ports since I'm not that good at desoldering. Although the Pi Zero would be a better option only because it doesn't generate as much heat as the Pi 2 or 3.
Winrar? Why not 7-zip? :)
old habits die hard.
Windows? Why (hehe)?
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games don't buy winrar. The trial is infinite
10:00 is slenderman simulator
