As a teenager I heard this piece live in the 1960s in Sacramento, CA. Never forgot it.

Martinu - one of the most underrated of 20th century composers.

This is such a great piece. Like Mozart, Martinu knows how to compress his ideas and never runs on and on. I never tire of his refreshing tonal and rhythmic ideas.

Having now heard at least a dozen different performances of this work, I think this is far and away the best one. And what a gem it is!

It is not so easy to do a piece this rhythmically intricate without a conductor. Bravo to the concertmaster for leading the group through it. A great performance of a fascinating and wonderful work by Martinu.

The very fact, that such a demanding piece of music can be played so beautifully without a conductor, raises questions. His music can be slightly confusing in places, but never fails to deliver and leaves a lasting impression.

Flawless. Brought me to tears. The Jewel of San Diego, California, USA. A place to get away and escape to?

As someone who has spent much of his life in La Jolla, I don't find this music particularly evocative of it, but I have always loved this sinfonietta since I first heard it.

The music was not intended to evoke La Jolla, but it is just that this work was commissionned by a music society of this town

Great piece like most of Martinü's!!
Conductors are LAZY!! Don't want to learn new repertoire! Shame on them!!

A magnificent work with the first movement reminiscent of the earlier symphonies, the conductor is of course the first violinist and he's both amazing and distracting, with his bobbing and sometimes even bouncing. But a great performance nonetheless.

Don't need to watch. Just listen. Music is for ears.
