    That was a nice potato harvest! I have grown Yukon Gold and Norland before. The Red Norlands are super productive! I know there are a lot of newer yellow fleshed varieties that are much more productive than Yukon Gold, but none that taste better!

    More nice taters! We are also dry here in north central Florida; we're in very high fire danger right now. Today we had a shower, and more rain is finally on the way.
    When I was still working I set up a drip irrigation system. I grow most things, fruit trees and vegetables, in those 30 gallon cattle feed tubs. Each one gets an emitter which delivers one gallon of water every day on a timer. When the hot, rainy season starts, June, July, and August, I set it back to every three days, and sometimes just turn it off. That system has made the past 15 years so much easier.

    • @LazyDogFarm

    • @LazyDogFarm

    Yukon Gold Potatoes are a WOW !Thanks Travis for the garden rundown. Well, up here in Southern N.H. our area missed any heavy rain do to thunderstorms. Which is a mixed blessing, because the heavy rain can wash out newly planted seed. Here we have 3 types of cherry Indeterminates planted, 2 varieties of broccoli, basil, cucumbers, 3 types of summer squash, few pumpkin hills, beets (not doing very well). Indian friend of mine (from India), asked me to grow an Indian Lauki and Indian Pulses(broad beans) . U.S. Drought Monitor for N.H. has our area now in DO= Abnormally Dry, from Moderate Drought. Water here whenever plants show stress.

    Should do a rain water catchment system off your pole barn roof to water the garden, rain water is much better than well water

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  3 года назад

      That's not a bad idea for the simple fact of reducing the runoff that barn water causes on those lower plots. However, I'd also have to invest in a pump so that I could then feed my drip systems with that barrel water.

    my hard lesson this year:// i didn't get around to hilling these but did check to make sure they were not showing on top of soil and they ALL turned out with top side of potato with a greenish color. i could not believe it. the only reason i could think of was that my soil is so sandy. after a few rains/waterings, nothing but white sand left on top. that could have been the only reason. white/light sand/soil, still allowed too much sun to reach the tops. had the soil been darker, it might have blocked sun. ants and voles/moles are my biggest problem so growing under black cloth or straw is almost impossible. gonna save all my top green potatoes and use as seed potatoes for next time and hill them for sure:)

    Travis. Lazy dog. You garden looks like a poster compared to ours. Except the corn. Corn lovin the rain. Just hope the worms aren’t bad. Hard to spray when the rain wash it away in a few hours. Rain has slowed but still going. Got some today. Yes you can pull up corn plant and fill in the skips. I’ve done it many times. Have question for ya. My tomatoes have survived surprisingly well despite the rain. But since it has slowed. When I say slowed I mean it’s not raining all day and you can walk in the garden without sinking to your angle. Some of my tomato plant leaves are turning really dark green and curling up. Disease? I did give them a half shot of calcium nitrate last weekend. Could that have caused it? Have had several with blossom end rot. Since I have had this in a dry year I wasn’t sure if it was just the water causing it or if they needed the calcium. Great videos. I want to see how that arc trellis is doin.

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  3 года назад +1

      This is just a guess, but I imagine the tomatoes are just reacting to the change in weather. Mine were doing that when we had our first random heat spell. But I haven't noticed any leaf curling lately even through the drought. It was probably just plant stress and they should adjust.
      As far as the corn worms go, they're usually not too bad this early in the year. It's the second or third or fall planting where you have to really be on top of the spray game.

    Hey, Travis! Love your potato harvest! Mine are just starting to form flowers! As far as water goes, I water Zone A for an hour to an hour and a half almost every day and it seems to be enough. Zone B is where I have corn planted, so every row has a row start valve so I can water and fertilize the corn more as it gets bigger. There are also beans, potatoes peppers and okra in this plot - all on drip tape. I keep the valve closed on the okra most of the time and shoot them some water only once in a while. The beans, peppers and potatoes get a little more water, but I keep an eye on how the plants look and turn off the row if I think they don't need it. I'll need to shoot some Ammonium Nitrate to the corn soon, and I'll do it with the fertilizer injector with all the other valves closed. It barely hiney-high, so I can't use the high arch on it anymore. I know it seems more complicated than it needs to be, but it works for me!

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  3 года назад

      Seems like those valves are very helpful for your situation. I'm sure as you're able to expand and create more plots, that will make things much easier.

    Hi Travis,
    Good video on potatoes. Have a unrelated question on spraying pesticides . I remember a video you did with your dad which talks about a schedule of pesticides. I know it’s only a short time before the cucumber spotted beetle and squash beetles invade us and wondered if I should start a preemptive strike using the spinosad and neem oil I have. Just wondered your thought

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  3 года назад

      Be careful with the neem oil if your daytime temps are over 80. It can burn the plants. But I'd go ahead and get some spinosad going if you know you're going to have a problem.

    My stand of peanuts looks just like yours. I planted same time as you did yours, the Wynne’s from Hoss, same way you did, and like you, have that same spotty germination. My fist time growing them as well. Only thing I can figure is I planted them right when that drought started too. Here in SC we only had 1 good rain the last month. Seems like even with watering everyday, you can’t keep the seed bed wet enough to keep up. Interestingly, I scratched around in some of the places that I had the gaps and found seed that had somewhat germinated but really not rooted or shot up. If it fills in some, I may not nix it, and use this stand as a learning experience.

I know I got a horrible time with a green bean this year called purple teepees that have been put out twice and not one has germinated but the peanuts I’ve had issues with in the past and the above mentioned was my issues, to little water at start compared to the heat we had.
