‘It’s just like nothing I’ve ever seen’: Dozens of senior living facilities without power

- It’s hard to see much of anything on the third floor of the Treemont Living Community in SW Houston. As you walk by, temporary lights lead your path. Deirdre McClain invited KPRC 2 to her unit to feel what residents have experienced since Hurricane Beryl knocked out power.
“My experience has been awful,” McClain said. “This is the third day that we are without electricity.”
Also on the third floor is Liz Daher’s 92-year-old dad, Sam. She called Houston firefighters to the facility to remove him from his room so he could seek treatment.
“He has congestive heart failure, so the heat has just made it worse,” Daher said. “We can’t stand to be in there, so of course he can’t stand to be in there.”
Her dad wasn’t the only one assisted by HFD. In an hour’s span, KPRC 2′s Rilwan Balogun watched as three ambulances visited the southwest community with paramedics treating residents.
Elderly care facilities should be MANDATED to have back up generators.
Exactly! It’s a damn shame! You can tell a lot about a country by how it treats it children, its elderly and the poor.
If our country stopped sending billions to other countries, these facilities could get generators provided to them.
@my2beagles535 I think this may be a Independent Senior Living Community. Most I have seen are like apartment communities for seniors and, unfortunately, aren't mandated to provide generators. They definitely should, though.
Florida does Both Rep and Dem agree 100% for once to pass that law
But Dad said regulations are evil
This is inexcusable. Our elderly deserve better.
Why are they in a home if they deserve better?

Misplaced
No excuse to not have generators in these elder homes!
I bought one.
Even if they had just one $800 generator, they could keep a common room lit and cool for them, at least! And have cold drinks, ice packs, and perishables fresh. And you know some of these seniors need assistive devices running.
Unbelievable.
The money was misused and facilities that needed generators.. didn’t get them. It’s unacceptable. Obviously someone was pocketing the money.
Not surprised… it happens in any position. The very psychology ensures that greed wins out, every time.
Always misuse
The owners of these places are the first suspects of misusing the money. My opinion
The investors want their money.
When you can have the Astros game playing at the ballpark while people are suffering and dying in the same city, you have a major problem.
People are suffering every day all year long. Should we just get rid of our sports teams and any extracurricular activities?

@@Texaslife98 so, you think YOUR issues are important enough to cancel sports for EVERYONE?? That's a very narcissistic view. I live on the coast. Got completely wiped out during Ike. I was actually at a game the night before. I got knee deep water this go round. I wouldn't begrudge anyone any happiness or pleasure just because I was having a hard time. We all know we live where hurricanes happen. Get a generator. I got a BIG one after Ike that runs the whole house. Before I had that; I had a small gas generator that I would run the coffee pot and fan at night with. I put food in an ice chest with ice. We made sandwiches and we cooked on the grill. We always keep plenty bottled water and canned goods. If you are going to live where hurricanes happen; you can either sit around complaining and waiting for others to make things better for you OR you can be prepared to take care of yourself. You could also move to a place you won't be in the path of hurricanes . What you CAN'T do is dictate to everyone else what they should or shouldn't do while you are having a tough time. You could have bought a 5 dollar ticket like everyone else and sat in the AC eating dollar hotdogs. Many people did go and enjoy themselves. Why does that upset you? Should we all just stop living and wallow in misery and complaints like you or should we grab a bit of fun and pleasure when we can.
They are not advocates for the patients,
they advocates for the corporations!
BINGO! Jackpot!!
These people need to be taken care up. They are not in prison. They deserve to be honored
Exactly where are there families to pick them up
Exactly where are the families picking them up.... oh they expect someone else to take care of them
After the way seniors were treated during COVID Plandemic, you expect any better in these circumstances?
The city of Houston should go to every nursing home and make sure that they have generators hooked up to their facilities before they give them a license to taking old people
Most of the time, owners of nursing homes are just in it to make mega bucks. It's a good investment. What a racket. Once they take all the money from the patients sale of assets (home etc.) then their "social worker" can apply for Medicaid to pay the huge bill. The caregivers are worked too hard......just another racket in our country.
Anybody remember 2005, a 🌀 called Katrina??
20 years later and the do called greatest country is experiencing the same dread
UNBELIEVABLE 😔
All kinds of $$ for wars, but not so much for the people who live in this country.
Also the NY nursing homes during c v.
I live in Minnesota and most of these senior homes have a back up generator. I’m blown away in Texas with all the disasters they don’t have back up generators.
Texas is an anti-regulation state. Profit before people.
It’s a dam shame at the price they charge 😢😢😢😢
The law says nursing homes are required to have them but for basic electric needs ...not to run the heating and air conditioning 😢
All the disasters 🙄
A lot of these people pay no rent, the govt.pays for all their needs.
The owner received all that money and can’t invest in a generator that cost 1 month of income. Certain they get over 30 k a month
I bought a large Generac for my NE Texas home after the Great Ice Storm. It cost, when everything was said and done, just short of $9,000 dollars. A nursing home would need several larger generators. And, a generator must receive annual maintenance.
Greed? Maybe😢
Just left my family members' home at Treemont and the 6th day without power! We are fortunate to have taken our family member to a home with power while we continue to struggle. There are people still there! It's horrible. We want to throw billions of dollars to Ukraine and folks not here legally but forget about our elderly, disabled, veterans, children. It's ridiculous!
Don’t blame Ukrainian for this situation. Your nursing homes are regulated by the state not the federal government. Call your governor.
The governor and your state legislature should’ve passed legislation mandating that these facilities have back up generators and should be inspected and fined when not operational or don’t pass inspection. It’s a failure at the state level, just like the big freeze. Has nothing to do with the federal government. Talk to your governor. Oh you can’t, he left the state on vacation.
But no problem with 20 billion to the Israelis?
This is unacceptable. I'm 32, my neighbor is like 50 i felt so bad for him i gave him my cooler with ice and a fan while i left to look for a hotel. This is sad man.
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 GOD BLESS YOU!!!
Thank you for your kindness, & restoring our hope in mankind.
You also gave your neighbor more than just a cooler. You told him his life matters. He will have only good thoughts toward you each time he thinks of you.
If power isn't restored soon, this weather event will be remembered for all too many unnecessary deaths. Southerners make fun of Chicago, for example, during heat waves and all the deaths. Well, this is what happens when you don't have AC. It's very concerning.
And it's only july 😢
People have survived a very long time without air conditioning. Going weeks in 90+ degrees although uncomfortable our planet must balance everything the humans do you her to self preserve. Makes you appreciate the little things. God's divine timing. I remember weeks of the sun just pounding us and we survived without air conditioning. Older middle aged young kids they all survived. The planet must protect herself. She was doing it before humans were created. We're just along for the ride. Have an amazing ascension process. The planet is currently ascending during the death and rebirth cycle what Jesus spoke of two thousand years ago. Humans had their thousand years now God gets to take back the planet God created to preserve the planet. Landfills overflowing with convenience humans litter everywhere eating flesh against Noah's laws didn't listen to Noah either so that death is being purged why Jesus gave his life to save humanity now by universal law humans must sacrifice something not someone but something for Jesus to keep the covenant. Doesn't mean sacrifice an animal or human it means go help your neighborhood. All that stuff you humans just had to have to fit in with the crowd where is it now? Shoved in a closet, junk drawer, landfills overflowing with convenience. Al Gore said it would catch up all that convenience will become extremely inconvenient. Welcome back to reality humans. Big mamma Gaia is a lot bigger than it's inhabitants. They'll survive but they'll be brought to their knees just like Jesus said they would. This is all about the return of Jesus. You humans wouldn't be here had he not sacrificed. He didn't create all these problems humans shouldn't be casting their problems upon Jesus when he already sacrificed once let the humans see what sacrifice really means. He was right in front of you the whole time. They'll figure it out. Good luck. You need him to do for you by universal law you must do something for him. Jesus didn't cast all his problems on you humans why are all the humans casting everything upon him? Just trying to figure out their logic. We reject you Jesus but die for us and fix all our problems so we don't have to change. Common sense. Good luck with your return Jesus it's obvious he's coming back. If we need Jesus by universal law if he does something for us we have to do something for him like your money system that reads IN GOD WE TRUST. The all seeing eye. Everything we do the all seeing eye can see. I'm God's Oracle just channeling Father God. Keeps one humble and obedient. They'll do for themselves but only themselves and spit on the volunteers and Jesus. Basically shooting themselves in the foot doing that. We don't believe in God as we're in God's image. We don't want your rules God but everything you created we'll lie for cheat people for overstay is not allowed murder for monopoly money destroy people's lives for monopoly money invade now you're being invaded. That's what you guys did now someone else is doing it future proves past. No they will not this time. Steal it'll steal from you sacrifice it'll sacrifice you cheat you'll cheat you invade it'll invade you silence someone it'll silence you. Universal law. He did in the past how'd that go? That won't happen again Michael and Gabriel and Satan won't allow it. God give us everything God returns okay what did you give me? I offered you all this but what did you humans do for God but destroy yourselves? Cloning without permission is incarnation crimes punishable by removal. You need permission. Rejecting Jesus is rejecting you. Rejecting God is rejecting you. Wake up!!!! We're suffering but didn't we do that to Jesus in the beginning? Universal law. Project earth future proves past experiment. They'll want to this time when they see what they're missing out from rejecting Jesus. Can't hitch hike or invade this one. Jesus is saying I left the prison open for you. You don't want God or Jesus to can't have God's creation. All they have to do is get on their knees and change. That's all. You've done it twice now humans. Heal the sick so we don't have to change. You go to the doctor you have to pay same applies to Jesus. Do as thou wilt not allowed. You humans were deceived thinking you can lie cheat steal murder sacrifice without being held accountable. You want everyone else to be held accountable by universal law someone must hold you accountable. I'm SWITZERLAND just trying to have Jesus back in a world against him which makes absolutely no sense. Right now all the evil and wicked is being removed. God allows it for a reason not my place to judge. Just trying to rationalize this.
And dialysis clinics are down too but hey the panda Express and Sonic on 1960 are up and running so exactly how is centerpoint really choosing who to fix the power for?

Back up generators should be mandatory in these facilities. Sad no one seems to be helping…..GREED is the problem. So sad.
How can these facilities be open with out having GENERATORS!!! Of course our State officials in Texas would not have requirements to protect the Elders. The top leadership in Austin needs to be voted out of office. LET"S REMEMBER THIS NEXT TIME WE VOTE FOR GOVERNOR, LT. GOVERNOR., etc. Houston has to fight back and require Elder care changes before they get our votes!!
Pro-life LOL
Cool your engines....Every NH that I have worked at ( 5 states...Tx included) DO REQUIRE generators. But even huge generators can't always handle the load of necessary medical equipment, laundry ( you want to know how much soiled laundry a NH processes in a day?), lights, kitchen AND A/C. A lot of the patients could be gathered into a large common room and provided drinks, being bathed frequently with washclothes as needed. Reduce the building area that has to be cooled. You could go and volunteer to sit with a few patients to give them constant attention/take care of some tasks.
look, you vote by not sending your elderly there in the first place or at least ask if they have backup plans...
You’ve got a disabled Governor ffs! And he doesn’t seem to give a damn about people in the same situation!

Brandy Demeris 100% did the right thing. A few years ago a hurricane swept through Louisiana. Folks from ten nursing homes were all "safely evacuated" to a WAREHOUSE in Independence Louisiana. I think there were 900 of them folks who were warehoused while the storm passed. If you have a loved one who is in an assisted living facility, That loved one may be better off if you picked them up and they spend the weekend with you.
Perfect family in Louisiana I remember the story❤
families taking care of their own people?.....preposterous....they would rather ditch them in public facilities and then complain when things are not right...
Skilled nursing facilities are required to have generators.
I question the word "skilled". Regardless these facilities should be required to have multiple permanent generators installed.
The TX law states that the generator isn't required to be used for the heating or air conditioner!! Barbaric law for sure
The electric company and every director of every nurseing home needs to be held a accountable for this!!!!!!
This is ridiculous. I don’t care how much a generator is give these elderly people some cold air. Hell you’re taking their money.😡
Why not take them home? Please don't leave your loved ones to strangers.
@@bekind4018 you are soooo right. I learned this the hard way, even tho I knew the rep these places had. I regret it to this day.😥 People please listen to this commenter. They know what they're talking about about

A medical facility needs a generator!!! I can't believe this is legal???
In the State of Texas you are. The one my mother was in had a backup generator and was tested weekly. It powered the whole facility.
Families with power should pick up there family members from nursing home
I live in a senior community. It is not any type of assisted living, just a 55+ community . While a generator for at least one of the elevators would have been nice, they have tried to do other things for the community. They brought in cooling buses with charging centers, and at least one hot meal a day, sometimes two, for residents (all at no charge). They also distributed ice and water. But it sounds like the special centers did absolutely nothing for the residents. That’s just criminal!
Very sad 😔 indeed. Older folks have a hard time without AC and fresh foods. If they’re without power the foods in their refrigerators has spoiled too. I pray for relief for them all. 🙏
Are they hoping they will die?? They obviously don't care.
Get a generator, hook it up to an ac window unit. And have everyone chillin in a room. How do these ppl not have contingency plans for storms???
Isn't Texas all about getting rid of regulations?
Yeah... I think it is
In Africa, businesses have generators 😂 I see it first hand when I go home. Many Americans are simply being lied to. We are being given false choices. The cost thing is an excuse. The government can and should mandate for businesses to have generators.
A great expense? At the LIFE OF A RESIDENT??? 🤦♀️ WHERES THE STATE?
Assisted living and nursing homes should be required to have emergency generators by law...I visited San Antonio, Texas from Chicago in the dead of Summer and was horrible hot for a healthy person. Those facilities charge between 3k to 8k Dollars per month to each resident! 😡
City buses made excellent “cooling stations” here in New Orleans. Just an idea for a temporary solution.
Prayers for help to come and bring generators. And help.
they should have backup generators.
Most generators are a temporary solution. When the gas runs out so do the generators. Call the families and tell them to come and pick up their family members. Having enough for one large room to be cooled would help for those without a family. The homes didn't cause the power outage but should be proactive in their response to no power.
The could get Generac powered by Solar and gas.
Not everyone has a family there were a lot of people lost in C19.
Not everyone can do that
My mother had also and it cost us almost $100,000 to make our home livable, most people in our group went bankrupt trying to get their home made handicap accessible , that didnt include the thousands of dollars in equipment and the monthly thousands of dollars of aides costs
Believe it or not there are many people who dont qualify for medicaid and when a person has a complex disease like als you need a whole team to care for that person and its almost impossible to do in the home (hoyer lifts, ramps, etc)
I think people who act like its so simple are ignorant and havent had to care for someone who requires 24/7 care or who doesnt qualify for medicaid… they also have no idea how stressful it is on the one person who is the caretaker
@KIRKSHINTATURNIPSEED It's always folks who've never had to do it who pipe up. Some patients require 24/7 care. They have no idea what the financial, physical and psychological burdens are for full time caretakers. Not to mention someone having to quit their job to do that full time care.

Yea, lady, the same thing happened after Ike when many areas of Houston were without power for up to 2 weeks.
Can generators even run the AC in a building with that much square footage? These are very large buildings. Can resident's be transferred to facilities with power than have beds available? I'll tell you someone else that needs advocates in these places: The people who do the direct care. They have no place to go to. And oh no, not the surveyors. No, no, no.

We need to go back to buildings with windows that open. A/C was only incorporated into homes starting in the 1970's. I'm 67, and I grew up in the South with no A/C. So did these seniors in Houston. If well built, homes do stay cool enough without A/C, as they do all over Mexico and the tropics. But you must have windows that open, for ventilation.

BS. Any state sanctioned NH is REQUIRED to have generators....at least in every state that I have worked in( 5 including Tx.) Those generators are not always large enough to provide every patient's room with power for individual A/C units. A boat load of power is required to run a NH...medical equipment, laundry, lights, kitchen. Most staffs have to participate in live drills for emergency situations and have plans to manage them.
I would go get my parents and take them somewhere with AC in a heartbeat 😢😢😢
