I personally only got into the Persona series two weeks ago with Persona 3 (FES if you want to know what version). I knew what the series was a long time ago but I never played any of the games till now...where has this series been all my life? This game is flipping BEAST!
it dates back to ps1 which they have persona 1 and 2. good luck finding them for a cheap price. though it's not as popular like ff 7, 8, 9. there are many good rpg during the 4-5 gen period especially in story wise. Suikoden, wild arms, Breath of Fire, Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, lunar, chrono cross (ps1 side).
Sega Saturn have a few good one too. Shining, albert oddessey, dragon force, and more that I do not know.
SNES have some really good jrpg. Chrono Trigger, FF2-3, super Mario rpg, Breath of Fire, secret of mana and evermore, Earthbound. I recommend playing the rom instead because this will be pricey on ebay.
Hey, I love having Nick on the show! The first few episodes felt weird without him to be honest!
I love how Nick will just go dark for 15 minutes when he has no input to the current topic. Everyone except him looks attached to the conversation and he's just like "mmm coffees good."
I love the fact that whenever Pokemon is mentioned on the show, Colin and Greg are the first to scoff. But when Greg is asked to describe Persona, his first parallel is Pokieman.
SMT is the main series. Persona was a subseries of Shin Megami Tensei. Then it spun off and became it's own series with Persona 4 Golden
The Shin Megami Tensei has its gaming origins in the Megami Tensei series. The first MegaTen game came out in 1987, Persona on PS1 didn't come out until 1996. There were many game in between, so while Persona was highly influential, it was not the first of the series.
What's not a waste of time is watching Kinda Funny videos.
I'm not a fan of anime, but hearing Greg and Collin talk about Persona 5 like it will be a godsend has sparked some interest in me. I might just have to give it a try when it comes out for ps4.

idk why no one liked mirror's edge. it's a 9/10 for me. i found the parkour to be so fluid and when done right it was so satisfying. also there are things you can do to knockout enemies so easily for example by sliding into someone, there was only 1 level i had trouble with which was the last one where it was a room filled with armed guys and u had to shoot out the 4 server points or something like that

Just a correction: Shin Megami Tensei is the mainline series. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona is one of the many (probably most popular) spinoff series.
Persona 4 Golden was one of the reasons why i bought my Vita since i really loved P3P for PSP

Shin Megami Tensei is a series about summoning demons. Persona was a spinoff, focusing on summoning the characters psyche to fight demons. Most Shin Megami Tensei like the 4th for the 3DS centers around feudal Japan era where your character is a samurai who hunts demons. I guess that's it, but correct me if I'm wrong. Great podcast o7

I own persona 4 both on ps3 (ps2 version) and p4 golden. Love the persona games, can't wait for persona 5 !
The island wasn't purgatory , the island was real. The flash forward was purgatory where the important people in there lives would meet up to pass on together

Tim I respect your opinion to smash brawl, but brawl was to forgiving with the recovery/ up b. At least for me, I prefer the Melee recovery over brawl.
Not being on Vita is going to make it harder for me to get into. I have very little time to sit down in front of TV. Persona 4 was the perfect game for me, because i could play it in bed, play it during my lunch breaks, and play it on the bus.
I can't wait for Persona 5, but I'm nervous that i just wont have the time to really get into it.

Rodea for WiiU looks great and Danganronpa really looks interesting. Watched the anime but I still need to play the games
I think Zelda games have had pretty compelling stories. I can get Colin's standpoint with Majora's Mask and Zelda II. Yes they were unique and weird. But Ocarina had a story that chronicled the the creation of the triforce and hyrule. Windwaker also had a pretty engrossing story that told of the destruction of Hyrule and how it fell into ruin. Twilight Princess also had a pretty deep story that had some interesting character relationships particularly between Link and Midna. And Skyward Sword in particular had a pretty interesting story in that it gave more insight into the creation of the Master Sword and background of the goddess Hylia. The Lore is there and I think it has enough to build from.
I do think that Metroid would be a very good game to film/tv adaptation however and would like to see it.
The first Shin Megami Tensei game was Shin Megami Tensei for the NES. Persona was originally called Persona: Revelations, on the Playstation. And yea, at this point, Persona is it's own thing. Basically, Shin Megami Tensei is kind of a dark themed series of games that pretty much always has something to do demons (Shadows used to be called Demons instead). Each game in the "series" has a different focus, not all are JRPGs, necessarily. It's a weird series. Heh
Can anyone help me out I have a Ps Vita and I have heard that Jrpgs are excellent on the Vita. However I don't think a game like Persona 4 Golden would suit someone like me who has never played a proper RPG before, can anyone recommend a good "beginner Jrpg" game to introduce me to the genre.

Actually Golden might be the best for you. You could change the difficulty (only if you start a new game tho) to easy if you'd like.

Steven Hannah Yeah, no problem. Most people enjoy this game, and if it turns out to be your thing, be prepared to sink hours and hours into it.

I've always felt like Metal Gear would translate well to Television, and I agree with Nick that the Netflix model is the way to go.
Unfortunately Colin was wrong on the whole Shin Megami Tensei thing. Megami Tenei (which means Goddess Revival, or something like that...) started way back in 87 on the Famicom and MSX titled Digital Devil Saga: Megami Tensei. Then Shin Megami Tensei (New Goddess Revival) stated up in 92 on the Super Famicom. So Persona certainly did not start the series, it was the spin off.
Zelda show is all for netflix's launch in japan right? or am i totally misreading that, my research of netflix regional specific original programming is nought other than "Derek", and foreign language programming. Would have been nice for some thoughts on the lack of streaming services in Japan (and why the vita TV basically died there), and how this is an attempt by Netflix to entice Japanese audiences to streaming services.

For what? All he does is look at the ceiling and check his watch every two minutes.
I don't care what video game they choose for a show for Netflix the most important thing is that whatever it is it needs to be good, it needs to be good to open the door for other video game shows or movies to be made in a serious way, and hopefully The Last of Us movie does good as well.
And I also agree the last of us TV show would be a better idea because you could tell a longer more detailed story at a slower pace like the game does.
A Mario or Zelda series with real story wouldn't be super out there. Square did Super Mario RPG, and that's a pretty decent story.
3 weeks later and the Dying Light trophies are STILL broken. Can't platinum because the game refuses to acknowledge I've finished all the side quests, captured all the zones, and saved enough survivors from Rais. Fun game, but the trophy experience has completely soured it.. guess I'll think twice about supporting Techland again.
Mirrors edge is a lot more fun when you try not to kill everyone. I never shot anyone in the game until the last level.
I left my 3ds on an airplane...sigh....

colin is actually totally wrong. smt is the mainline series that dates back to the 80s dealing with people capturing demons and the themes and ideas have spun off into a few difference smt series and persona is just one of the most recent in the smt franchise and one of the first to become popular in north america.
I agree with Colin. If Bethesda holds their own conference and doesn't announce Fallout 4 it will be one of the biggest trolls in gaming history.
Persona 4 is the only game where I care so much about the music yeah halo and mass effect have good music but persona has by far in my opinion the best music in a video game ever

Man, Colin and Greg, I love you guys but that was really poor explanation of what Persona 4 is. It could've been as easy and as succinct as: it's murder mystery story that mixes dungeon crawler mechanics with social sim aspects. You could've gone more indepth by saying that these mechanics are deeply intertwined, like your real world relationships unlocking special teammate abilities and battle and such.
It was also very weird to not hear you guys emphasize how good the writing is. It's so good that every reviewer that touched it, regardless of how much or how little they like the genre, couldn't help but love it. The combination of stellar game design, writing, art direction, music direction. It set the bar so high that 7 years later there hasn't been any JRPG that has come even close to topping it. And if P5 manages to push the bar further then it's likely going to stay on top for many years to come.
Colin's argument that one of the reasons it became a hit was because of a drought in the genre is just silly. It came out at the apex of the genre, where there were JRPGs left and right on the PS2. What made it stand out was its quality, plain and simple.
I did like one other Colin comment that P5 could pave the way for a JRPG renaissance, which I hadn't thought about yet but seems totally plausible and would be awesome.
what i don't like further down the game dying light is you get very overpowered.
to half of the character progression, the game feels as real as it can get and i love it, but after that you get those abilities that you can frow someone 20 m aside when they attack you or the dropkick thing, it's great but when you put points into stronger dropkicks they fly like you were a bull hitting them
does nick really add anything on screen or mic? im not being a hater but his involvement seems to drag thing down without anything near an informed opinion. sorry if this is harsh just my opinion. I hope he gets better

OH PLS games don't need to be empowering. Especially mirrors edge a game chancing the fps scene. the game had faults but being empowering isn't one of them.
Mirrors edge gameplay to this day is the most fluid and complex parkour game ever created. I have played dying light and what you are doing is not parkour in any sense its basic climbng, You can jump to a ledge and you grab it. If you didnt find mirrors ede gameplay fluid thats because you are bad at it cause some of my coolest moments in gameplay were n that game. And none of those moments were prescripted which is what makes mirrors edge so cool to so many of us. Sorry colin its not overrated
I am wondering if this channel is relevant for me? As all I am seeing is just Playstation coverage. Does the channel solely focus on PlayStation content, console games, or even PC Games? I'm a PC Gamer, so should I leave?

Well these guys aren't really PC gamers, they seem to focus on consoles because simply that's what they play. But its quality content.
***** It is okay for not focusing PC only titles. How about multiplatform games which is on consoles and PC? From the videos all I see is PlayStation. I know Collin and Greg from Podcast Beyond of IGN, I thought it was simply their job description at that time.
Adnan Ahmed They cover multiplats quite often, Greg and Colin's expertise might appear Playstation specific but the whole point of this podcast is that it's Podcast Beyond but not only Playstation.
idk what show you're watching but they've discussed a lot about nintendo and xbox before.
this episode is playstation-centric because of the persona news. heck they even discussed fallout on this episode. and zelda/games that will be a good netflix series.
