There is a big difference between E36 throttle cable and E46 pedal-by-wire. Nothing can compare to the analog, unfiltered feel of a throttle cable imo

It’s be the E46 for me. It’s just that bit more modern and I think it’s from a high point in BMW design (E46, E39 and E38 all well proportioned).

Purchased an E46 330i ci sport / manual in February this year as a daily driver (E39 M5 is a garage queen)
Bought if for £3k with only 81,000 miles on it. Have invested over 2.5k in preventative maintenance like the cooling system + repairs and cosmetic upgrades. It's now a stunning car with zero rust and absolutely flawless condition...and i'm obsessive about detailing. Love this car as much as the M5

    E36 for sure.
I have owned one, and compared to every E46 I have driven (lots : I'm in the motor trade), they are so much more 'raw' and give a better driving experience imo.
Is yours a genuine 328is ? ie does it have the LSD too ? (the 328i as you probably know didn't have an LSD).
Regarding the feeling of restrictive throttle, get an M50 intake manifold on it, it does make a lot of difference, coupled with a Dave F (if you can find one), or Simota induction kit. 30 to 35 bhp extra but also the engine breathes as it was really meant to, without the restriction to keep the power below 200bhp as per the gentleman's agreement at the time (between Mercedes, Audi & BMW). The M52 intake manifold was the thing which ruined it as a performance engine.
The extra 30/35 bhp feels more like 60/70 bhp because the engine can rev properly (I also had my rev limit raised when I had it mapped for the M50 manifold). It's a completely different beast with those small mods.
The only other mod I had done was the clutch delay valve removed to give a much better clutch pedal.
It's odd how you have gone back to the older models, and I bought an M140i now hahah !
I'm 1 year into M140i ownership, and yes the steering is not anything like as good as the E36, but I actually found the power is so easy to fully exploit, so much in fact, that mines remapped to 411bhp/576nm and I can still full throttle and enjoy it (although I would like a Limited Slip Diff now, to stop me having to feather the throttle coming out of corners).

E46 was a. Big leap forward from e36 but having owned a 1998 M3 coupe there was something really classy about the e36 it was a model that was designed in the late 1980s launched early 1990s and later ones were a lot better built. The e46 apart from those interior
Plastic issues is a great car . In all forms only
Problem now a little too old for a daily .
KEEP BOTH . Keep both and buy another
M3 do it up and then you have a lovely
    Stable. Cheers great story.

And like you said before you even get them going your easing off as you've run out of road or my common sense gland goes into overload.
