UPDATE! I havent realized how dark the lyrics actually were, so if you will search for them, I will issue trigger warning for suicide. This song was so positive and upbeat, and I focused on her entirely, and her singing. I absolutely did not expect such a heartbreaking background. Now it has a completely different meaning to me and honestly, I feel like I love it even more!
Thank you, I really appreciate the warning. I do want to warn you too about the copyright, japanese music are really strict about that. But I think stopping the video once in a while is already a good strategy. I just really want you to keep reacting to Yoasobi and other the first take performance. I think japanese music is really fun, and are super diverse.
Listens to clear sweet voice bouncing through those melody lines.😊😊😊😊 Looks up title and meaning of lyrics. 😢😢😢😢 A few reactors have been visibly shocked. The song sounds so upbeat and exhilarating. The lyrics, not so much.
FYI: Yoasobi is not the singer's name. It is a pairing of the singer Ikura and the writer/musician/arranger Ayase. I think there are three first take videos for Yoasobi. There is also official channel under the same name. Ikura has further songs on her own channel 幾田りら Official. There are more videos of Ikura on the Plusnica ぷらそにか channel.
The song is related to a one-shot called "The Tempatation of Thanatos", and the lyrics tell the story. You should check it in your free time, it's short but very good.
Japanese songs are very different from other pop songs out there. Most of their singers/bands each have their own distinct style in music that are very distinguishable from one another. Not to mention their expressiveness in their music. They can cover even the most sensitive of topics out there and make something colorful and meaningful out of it. Sadly, they're very underrated
One of the few reasons why japanese songs sounds really interesting to me is that the vocals themselves are an instruments to its intonation (if that makes sense). Sometime in English songs, the vocals and lyrics feels like a vehicle for the meaning of the songs. Japanese vocals and lyrics carries its own percussion and rhythm it feels like. (not a music major so I can't explain it in a more professional sense lol)
Nah I agree. The Korean and Japanese language in music, where the consonants of lyrics are clear and more pronounced, can sound like added layers of percussion in music sometimes
There is good reason that she’s one of the hottest voices in jpop right now! This song was the most popular song of 2020 on Japan’s billboard 100. Nobody else has a voice like this, not to mention the incredible compositions and storylines tied in with the music. I’m so excited as to what YOASOBI will continue creating, seeing as Yoru ni Kakeru, their debut song, only came out in late 2019.
Like the other comments have said, Yoasobi's "Gunjou" is a really performance. "Shout Baby" by Ryokushaka is my personal favorite, it's probably my favorite vocalist too!
I laughed when I heard your first commentary of her. We have the same exact impression. Her voice is very clean and the control is very good, I was mesmerized. I'm usually a fan of lower, stronger female voice, but this girl is one of the exceptions.
I really love The First Take versions of the songs. Be it a more acoustic version or, such as in this case, a more slowed down version. They give a different kind of vibe but always as amazing as the studio version of the songs
What i like from this performance is not just about the technique but the technique in such a difficult song. There are so many notes, scales, octaves, key changes that sometimes in a phrase every single syllable is a note! i really loved this performance but the original one is even faster and the beat is insane!
i was about to tell you that the song isn't exactly the most positive one out there- but you already knew by now, so it ain't necessary. BUT, i really would like you to give yoasobi's "gunjou" a chance because that, is one inspiring song and the first take version kind of really brings out the best from it. will be looking forward to more yoasobi reactions from you. < 3
I think that the attitude of listening to your songs is a professional who loves songs, and I think it's really comfortable as a listener. Please keep doing a good job.
Wow, I love your accent and the way you pronouncing the words. I'm not a native speaker just barely listen to English but the way you say I can understand all sentences. THANKS
Thank you for your professional analysis. It realky sinked in to me a lot. I feel like i figured out why I felt so comfortable when I listened to Ikura singing her songs. Great analysis. thanks.
The more i watch ur reaction vids..the more i love the way u react to them. Ur voice also very beautiful 😍 and you react to Yoasobi who is one of my favorite Japanese singers too :)
Ah! Yes! Another premiere with our favorite Kat! I'm really curious about this one. Again, I don't know her but it seems we are in the same kind of human being than LiSA in the previous premiere. I would love to be able to give recommendations for the next reactions but I don't know anything about this side of the music world. So I discover following your trails and thank you again for that!
LiSA×Uru - 再会 (produced by Ayase) / THE FIRST TAKE King Gnu - "白日(hakujitsu)", "三文小説(sanmonshousetsu)" Ado - "Gira Gira", "Odo" ↑These are also recommended. All voices are awesome!
Thank you for reacting to Yoasobi's Ikura! She did another The First Take of the song Yasashii Suisei (tl: Gentle Comet) and just like what you want, it's a tiny bit slower that this one! I hope you'd get to see and react to her more!
Great reaction. After reading the novel, I think it was the sad story of a solo suicide. The girl was actually the reaper in the form of his ideal partner. Patiently waiting for him to “run into the night” (commit suicide). It’s a dark story, but still beautifully sung 🎶.
Oh I also highly recommend the other sun that “YOASOBI group” play on the first take. The 群青, which made me get goose bump from the beginning to the end.
@@angstybulbasaur1712 doesn’t mean she would be able to sing it clean. A lot of English speaking people don’t have well spoken enunciated lyrics. Her Japanese is very clear.
A lot of Japanese songs have this sort of "disconnect" between the melody and the lyrics. I know several which have generally upbeat melodies but really dark lyrics.
The story is not a sad one though… it’s a bitter sweet song about a couple who in the end decides to die together and feel extreme happiness about ending their life together. The girl was always disappointed that her BF tried to save her from suicide. Here he comes to the conclusion that she wants him to die with him and this makes both happy
@@bingobongo1615 I don’t think you’ve read the story that’s inspired the song (Temptation of Thanatos). It may not change your view much but it’s still somewhat sad, or has a sad connotation.
A re-listen comment. You mention quite a few times about how effortlessly she switches registers and how sometimes there are some irregularities. I think if you listen closely, many or those irregularities are ornamentation. She has this fast vibrato she plays around with quite a bit. Sometimes when she changes registers she'll ping it with a little vibrato. She also does a lot of things with nasal tones, which is characteristic of the Japanese language, but she seems to have a lot of fine control over it. Another thing she likes to do is quickly quickly glide through a series of notes and switch registers multiple times, sometimes within a single phrase.
Not only melody and voice but also the lyric is superb. Music was inspired by the story of Thanatos, symbol of death. The main character ( young male) was asked double suicide by girl friend and finally done.
貴方はとても音楽性が高いお姫様です You are a most highly musical princess. This is the first time I've heard someone describe IKURA's singing so accurately and lovingly.
Another great reaction by you. Loved it. Since you mentioned happiness in this reaction I would like to suggest CHiCO with HoneyWorks - Shiawase from First Take. Its the most happy song I have ever heard with amazing subtitles.
Please react to "Useewa" (piano ver.) by Ado. She's another Japanese singer (only 18 years old), and is genuinely one of the best I've heard. Make sure to listen to the piano version, since the focus is more on the vocals, and they are even more amazing then in the original version. I'd really love to hear what a professional singer thinks about her!
Just putting my +1 in you listening to more songs from the First Take channel! My favorite is Yui's performance, but I also like the LiSA ones you already did and the two millet songs that are on there.
This is out of topic but I really love your accent! Also please check out the other performances from the first take including YOASOBI and Ryokuoushoku Shakai, their performances are amazing!

Cut the "Japanese" though. Japan has lots of variety. They here are going for that style though.
Japanese songs is a weird way to put it. J pop vs American pop perhaps? Like what's popular in the country would make more sense.
Nah I agree. The Korean and Japanese language in music, where the consonants of lyrics are clear and more pronounced, can sound like added layers of percussion in music sometimes
I agree, commonly most english songs just add rythm on the start and end of a word or sentences but japanese song carry it through every syllables.

My personal favourite is Chouchou Musubi 😁

Ikuta really is marvelous. As a fellow vocal coach, all I can do is agree to all you said. She's a cute little monster.
Since nobody has mentioned Yorushika, I'll suggest a song from them. "Spring Thief" is a great gateway into their music.
