    1974 they were a"crossover" band 10 or 12 people in the band -everybody liked it -nobody did muted trumpets and solo trumpets -deep baritone saxophones like they did -you wont hear any "cover" to that song they broke the mold

    From their 1973 album, "Tower of Power" this was their biggest hit to date, making it to Number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100's.
    The lyrics cover the heartbreak of a relationship ending with brilliant vocals so soulful and sweet. Their superlative musicianship has the ability to effortless shift from one genre to another. The guitars so lovely and the horns, my oh my, so outstanding. 🎺🎺🎺

    Lenny Williams was, is and will always be the man. The best frontman they had. I'm seeing them next week with a Philharmonic Orchestra. The song is from 1973. That's funny, I said 73 before I saw you look it up.-lol.

      The Providence Civic Center circa 1974. It was the lineup from "Back to Oakland." If you've ever been to the Civic Center, there are isles separating the seating. I also chatted with Greg Adams and asked him how Lenny Pickett hit those really high notes. He said "overtones." It's funny how you remember certain conversations.@@mikecavaretta2621

    This legendary singing group is still on tour, over 50 year's they should have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, there are a lot of fans are working and trying to get this band in into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for next year for 2024! All their Albums Songs are legendary in the music 🎶 🌎 🤩Horn section is legendary 🎶 🎶 🎷🎺

    This is a Tower of Power standard a song they do on every show! A true classic soul gem/ballad. The lead singer here is Lenny Williams whom many fans concider beeing the very best singer they ever had!

    As a soloist trumpet player i would always key on the bass guitar and also the baritone sax. This baritone sax truly comes out with it's distinctive sound. There is quite nothing like it! FYI: Leonid & Friends perform a beautiful tribute to this song.

    Such a banger of a pure soul song. I might be biased since I grew up in the era, but between the great radio hits and album tracks, I do believe the 70's eas the best era for music.

    This sounded as good on my AM radio in 1973. It's all most of us had back then. Loved it then and brings back memories of my best times in the early 70s.

    Great song! Great band! If there was a music format equivalent, to the EGOT, let’s say the VECD for fans, I have it for this song. Over the years since 1973 I bought it on Vinyl, Eight track, Cd, and Digital. Somehow I didn’t buy it on cassette.

    And "Soul Vaccination" and "Squib Cakes" might be worth a listen, too -- though for vocals, the latter only has a little two-word 'quote' of the title. But Chester Thompson's pedal-bass under his own organ solo is really something to behold. Thanks Cynthia!

    The San Francisco Bay Area produced many fine bands, Tower of Power being one of them. I grew up in Marin (North San Francisco Bay Area)in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and there was no better place or time to do that. Indescribable memories of a time and place that is still being written about.

    Want to know where else you've heard these guy's great horn section before? I know you've all probably heard this song a million times since it's release and rise to the top of the charts.....Elton John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me". Off the 1974 album Caribou, it was recorded at Caribou Ranch studios in CO, owned by James Guercio, another guy you've heard of......the producer of all those great Chicago early hits (also featuring a great horn section!)
