It's not ridiculous at all, the Fairmont is a fantastic car and any weather would be fine in my opinion. The time you made blew me away, it's really great! Congratulations again for the car!
My family had a Fairmont woody station wagon with the inline 6. It was originally my grandpa's car but it was donated to my family. That car was slow but it was dead reliable. lasting 36 years without restoration before some drunk chick in a BMW crashed into it in 2016.
This is high tech. Reminded me of the 70's when my uncle was building high performance snow machines. He'd be going flat out in the ditch while my cousin was driving on the road beside him in his Nova in order to clock the speed.
Honestly 11-13 seconds is a lot better than I expected it to be. Being a 40 year old economy car. I was thinking it would be high teens low twenties lol.
Man it was shifting super early, sounds like it needs a kickdown linkage adjustment and possibly a new vacuum modulator. The vacuum line going to the modulator may be damaged too, either way it would be a cheap and easy fix and would drastically improve the 0-60 time. Of course the C4 doesn't need a KD linkage to function like other automatic transmissions do so you could just put a good aftermarket floor shifter in the car and shift it when you want. Mr Gasket makes an auto floor shifter that is super cheap and easy to install and I intend to put one in my 75 F100 sometime soon. Also, I know this message is getting kinda long but that Fairmont is just screaming for a better gear and converter, I just bought everything I need to change the gear to a 4.10 in my Trans Am from Jegs for less than 300 bucks including an install kit and a mini spool. They have good converters for less than 400 bucks too, for under $1000 you could eliminate the cars two biggest handicaps so it can actually put what power it does have to the ground quicker and more efficiently. I'm no expert but one thing I have learned from messing with old hot rods for the last ten years is that the road to performance doesn't start in the engine bay, it starts in the drivetrain.
@@Str8sixfan No problem man, here's a couple links to some basic articles on the modulator and the KD linkage. First one is on the modulator, it is very important as it dictates what RPM the car shifts at when in drive and to a lesser extent how firm the shifts are. Very few modulators are not adjustable, however adjustable ones are very affordable at around 50 bucks or less. itstillruns.com/adjust-modulator-valve-ford-c4-8049803.html This next link will likely only be useful if you have a rod style KD linkage, if not then it shouldn't be too hard to find info on the cable style KD setup. partsandprojects.com/projects-and-features/auto-projects/how-to-install-and-adjust-kickdown-linkage-on-a-classic-mustang/ There's also some really good info on the subject in this Ford forum thread, the OP was even asking about a Fairmont so it should all be relevant. fordsix.com/viewtopic.php?t=66990

You might try setting the initial timing to 12-14 degrees. The increase in timing over stock will make more Torque & Power. I agree. 2.47 gears are tough to get moving! 👍
the 11 and 12 seconds was actually fast for that, you should have done it manually though. and stop completely before shifting, that is a huge no no in every car. too many people have that habbit
Yea, for the baseline I wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything that would cause inconsistencies. At the end when I'm done with the modifications I plan on doing, I'm sure you'll see me manually shifting to try and get that best time possible. I used to get on my wife for shifting to drive out of reverse pulling out of our driveway as the car is still rolling back. Thanks for noticing! I need to listen to myself preach! 😁
Great video thanks brother. I hope you sell it after you fix a few things. I guess it is a family car also so not bad. Tune up and some adjustments be ok. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again brother.
Next time do a small brake torque and leave off the brake. That will help get you moving a lil faster. Oh and I am so going to look at my phone when I do it...lol Good Job Grant.
I'm curious as to what the first pass was & last pass . My thinking is that first or maybe even second should be best being the car is still realativly cool . Thanks Grant really enjoyed the video . .
First pass with Joe in was actually one of the best. There is a coolant problem. I have video of it, but it didn't make the cut. I think it's a fairly small issue, but I haven't figured it out yet.
Has to be a 302 - the six was a slug; I'd even bet the 4 with a stick would beat the six with the auto (no stick with the six - I think). And then there was the turbo of which precious few were made 79-81 (?)
Hahaha, exactly. Actually on a few tests I had 1/8 mile time also selected and 1/8 mile and zero to 60 we're so close to the same thing that actually it ran the 1/8 faster than 0-60
Nope. I don't expect it to be fast. Timing it was part of the joke. Also, I want to throw some go fast goodies at it, to see what can be done. Thanks for watching
Hahaha! I love how it casually shifts the same as if was at part throttle. That 6 is really a dog. I drove mine with that engine for a few months, and then I just couldn't stand it anymore. haha
Maybe you think that in-line six is a dog if you are talking about as a drag race engine; but just for the record that is one of the most bulletproof engines that’s ever been made. there are thousands and thousands of cases where that big 300 c.u. in-line pulled somebody’s car around for 200,000 miles, then was pulled out and tied to a huge impeller and put at the edge of a cotton field in the Texas Panhandle where it continues today to pump water out of the ground, having never been touched with a wrench, doesn’t use oil, and starts every time. Credit where credit is due, my man. By the way, you could pretty much say the same thing about a Mopar 225 slant six…. If you’re looking for a dog, look no further than the LT1; but that’s another story LOL
Oh no, ericthecarguy took a beating building a Fairmont. :)
I'll take half as many haters...and that's probably good for an extra 500k views, hahaha. Thanks for watching
Mine is better than erics.. if he need lessons on building I can show him. Lol

I mean, at least it was a drunk chick that crashed into you with a BMW and not the average BMW owner crashing into you

hope you were able to catch my other two videos after the mods
My 1979 200 six Fairmont sedan did between 14-15 seconds 0-60 depending on how on how much it hesitated and how I feathered the throttle.
haha! That's crazy

Yeah I have gears planned. Thanks for the other advice. A lot to digest, but I think there's some stuff to inspect there

Now I see that you've actually had those 4.10s for awhile! Ha, I know how that goes though.
Now I'm going to have to compare your numbers with the Doba!.... good call!
It was fun, but no doubt the car needs some serious work on the motor. It's not running well and we have an antifreeze leak somewhere
Hey there you go, can't run short on content that way
Cool intro with the pistons. Good video.
Hey thanks. It's not exactly how I want it, but it'll do for now.
My 78 futura is white with blue tops. Blue with a bench. Wish I had buckets.
At least that sounds like a better color!

Did it spin the tire at all? I bet you could give it more ignition timing and 89-93 octane fuel and go a little quicker. 👍
Once. Barely. Haha, with 2.47 gears it's hard to tire spin!

I was trying to skew the facts ;)
I do plan on doing that with the gears for sure.
Looks like it's time for some engine upgrades and a set of 3:89.9 gears in the rear
Stock are 2:47s, I have an 8.8 purchased already with 3.27s ready to go!
Sounds good
Could you brake boost?
I thought it would have been slower actually
Yea, I guess being a V8 helps
Here cause it’s a ‘Mont.
Rock on!
appreciate you stopping by!

yes, it was a 302. Sold this car just yesterday. I got it down to a 7.98 0-60 from where it started
Is this the inline straight 6 engine??
It is a 302. I just re did 0-60 after my mods, in my last 3 videos, you should check it out
OK, bring in the anchor :-)
hehehe. yes just as well been dragging one!
Not to bad with 2.47 gears and a 200 six.
It was a 302, but it was either 2.47s or 2.73s (I can't recall -- maybe I mentioned it in the video? It's been years)
it's not that bad for an old car like that. a tune up would do it wonders I'll bet and would fix it's stalling problem.
Cool you have a 12sec car lol that is a cool app and good way to test your mods
Hahaha, exactly. Actually on a few tests I had 1/8 mile time also selected and 1/8 mile and zero to 60 we're so close to the same thing that actually it ran the 1/8 faster than 0-60
Well this car is an oil crisis era car so they detuned the engines for fuel economy. You shouldn't expect cars of this era to be fast.
Nope. I don't expect it to be fast. Timing it was part of the joke. Also, I want to throw some go fast goodies at it, to see what can be done. Thanks for watching
Here I is.
Not the great years for the American automobile industry.
For sure! By the time I got done with this car though, I had it at 8 seconds 0-60. Still not fast, but fun and good at burnouts
40 year old car with a straight 6,not that bad really
it's a 302 car
