Before buying the NAD M23 for $3749, be sure to investigate the Buckeye "Purifi 1ET7040SA Amplifier, Monoblock, V2", which are priced at $950 each ($1900 for two) and use the newer improved module.
Vandersteen and John Rutan have been joined at the hip for many many years. I audition them at his salon quite a while ago and I was mightily impressed.
i’ve not hit the point in life where i can afford anything on this list, but a steve guttenberg upload is always a treat and i truly appreciate hearing your thoughts about so many cool pieces of audio equipment
As a $1500-$2000 alternative to the Kef R7 Meta, I tried Kef LS50 Meta speakers stacked on vintage tower speakers in good condition. Find the right towers for your room and taste and the result is stunning.
Hey Steve, I heard you mention that you own many phono cartridges. I'd love to see a video where you briefly go though them and summarize their characteristics. I just recently purchased an Ortofon Cadenza Blue, which form me is about twice the price of most carts I've ever owned. I felt a bit assured of my purchase just knowing that you had one that appeared on your table in several photos, but I've never heard you talk about it. I like it very much, and very happy with my purchase!
Hi Steve! I do agree on those Kef's mentioned above. I do have the Kef R11 Meta hooked up on a Rogue Audio Cronus magnum iii. They really do sing. The soundstage that it gives is really big. The vocals are so good. I think it is a very good contender for Speaker of the Year.
+1 for the Lyra Delos. This must be a top bang for buck catridge contender.I have used this cart on a Rega P9 and about to swap the Rb1000 arm for a Rb3000 arm using the Delos versus Rega P10 with Aphelion 2 cart.
I'm no expert, but how would you compare it to the Cambridge Audio amp or the toroidal amp in the Outlaw RR 2160 mkii receiver? I know Schitt has a great reputation, but I'm not very familiar with them.
Sooooooo dam expensive. My ears couldn't tell the difference until I went from bookshelves to Wharfey 4.3, and that was pretty nice. The electronics don't seem to make that much of a difference to me (3 years on an aircraft carrier), so maybe I'm missing some of the delicious and luscious and wide space and vertical presentation and sweetness that audiofolks go on about. When you start to work on driving speakers more than it takes to drive a car...well, I'm happy fer'ya!
The 4.3's are really good, I love mine. Huge amount of value for money. I highly recommend replacing the binding post links with speaker cable. Also, raising them up a a few inches is helpful I think. The depth and soundstage you mention has a lot to do with the source component (dac etc.). P.S. I used to spend huge amounts of time working on cars and, and now build DIY hifi as a hobby instead!
Hey Steve, i have been following your channel from the beginning and you do a great job at reviewing gear. I just hope you don't forget about us little folk who do not have such rich tastes. Thanks,Joseph Majchrowski.
Thanks for watching Joseph, I'd like to more affordable products, but there's not enough really interesting ones to choose from. Mainstream affordable gear tends to be generic, sorry.
Love this Steve! I am on the hunt for some new gear and always learn something from you videos, even if the specific equipment is not in my price range. Thanks!
I couldn't take my eyes off the First Watt J2 the entire video because that's my amp :) love it...Steve, I'm wondering what full size speakers that you have listened to paired great with J2?
Awesome list! Thanks Steve for the great selection this year so far. Any plans for the rest of the year? I’m particularly curious if you’re planning to review any perlistens
That System of the Day by Alan is a nice room. What nobody in America knows about Glasgow in the UK is that it's one of those those 20 minute places where we can get every brand in Audio within twenty minutes of every other Audio store. The UK city is like living on a postage stamp compared to the USA and the cars there all have very small motors. The USA is different.
Agreed w/ Vidar 2. I have it along with Vidar 1 and Aegir. I feel like the Vidar 2 sounds just as good as Aegir without the power limitation. Vidar 1 sounded a bit too detailed at times.
love seeing that pink floyd album sitting in the back.. i'd suggest you shout out an album of your choice at the end of each episode.. just pick whatever comes to your mind or if there is something you been enjoying listening to lately.. doesnt have to be vinyl, any format is fine even streaming... cheers!

Steve thanks, as always a good review!!. Just saying, I'm guessing that 50% ++ of your audience have budgets of $1K to $5K for equipment, with small (12'x12' +/- ish & medium-sized 15'x15 + ish) listening rooms where speakers & equipment "can't" be perfectly placed, and can't be played loud, only at low to moderate levels. With that in mind, it would be interesting to know what equipment would work best for this scenario ("for example" what's the benefit of spending $3K to $10+++++K on a Speaker, if ya can only place it 6 inches to 1' from the back wall etc.?
@@mondoenterprises6710are you talking about price or the engineering problem of distance from the wall? Don’t see a lot of cheap Vandersteens on their website…

Who is the audience for these reviews, billionaires? At 58 y/o, and lots of loud live shows over the years, I don't think my ears can tell the difference between $900 speakers and $5000 speakers any more. Interesting to see what the industry is capable of but I'm in the "trickle down" environment of HiFi.
I got a Plinius 9200 XLR integrated amp (200 wats) which has the possibility to use it as a premp. Do you think combining with a Vidar2 would be an improvement? Thanks.
Hi Steve I love. Your reviews. Thanks so much. I am retired now. So have more time to play and listen to music. I was going to buy a turntable but decided to stay with CD,s because I have found great scouces for audiofile CD,s. So I have an entry level system .a Marantz cd5005 CD player, a Marantz pm6007 int amp. And Monitor bronze 2 bookshelf speakers. And every thing sounds good. But I'm thinking of getting the modi multibit 2 with the Vale + 2 headphone amp with tube for that warm sound.. does sound like a good combination for my entry level system? I would love to eventually get the Denafrips ares 2 dac but with my system do you think I will have to update my speakers ,amp etc for that dac. Thanks for all the great reviews and advice Bo Davis
Thanks for watching Bo! the biggest change you can make per dollar spent is upgrade your speakers. But sure, getting a better DAC is a worthwhile investment.
Thanks Steave I think I will try the Schiit hybrid tube ear phone and multibit dac 1st and then upgrade my speakers with your advice. Just to let you know there,s a recording co in the UK called chasing the dragon that have some excellent CD,s and direct cut vinyl album,s. If you buy 5 they give a discount. Thanks and keep up the great work. Bo
I am not an audiophile but have purchased headphones that are liked by audiophiles and it's changed my life. Now I'm searching for a pair of speakers or maybe just one, is there something you could recommend to someone who plays video games?
This is a wonderful viewer of the system room, beauitiful illuminated, very nice elctronic equipment and sources, but again a viewer system, which has thousands of dollar in electronic and sources, but loudspeaker which one would expect in a system which costs much less. I like the prospect of those Magnepan type speakers, but I"ll have to hunt down a vendor. Steve looks like he just left the chem lab with those glasses.
I bought all my Schiit stuff ( Aegir, Vidar1 , Freya plus, Loki ) because of your reviews, and I always go back to a single Aegir, although I have 2… I am wondering if the Vidar2 is a little closer to the Aegir in terms of warmth … the Vidar 1 seems to lack that sense of warmth in the midrange although the bass control is superior vs the Aegir
Steve, any chance to ever get your take on a Coda CSIB? Not a new product but the little info I found was exceptional. A Class A stage paired with a Class AB, tons of current for difficult loads. The gist of the limited owner input I found online: "better than PassLabs, better than Luxman, better than Accuphase". Under $7500, made in California, 10 year warranty, 5 year transferable.
I'm relatively new to the world of speakers and I could use some guidance. Could anyone kindly suggest a Bluetooth/WiFi speaker suitable for playing pop music? I'm not looking for anything exceptionally high-end, just a reliable speaker that can enhance my work environment with some enjoyable music. I've come across the Sonos Era 300 stereo pair - would this be a good option? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Hi BellaR648: May I suggest that you listen to the Kanto YU6 powered speakers plus Sub8 sub (I highly recommend the sub if you can swing it). This combo has served as my home office sound system for nearly three years, and I remain very pleased with its sound reproduction both for contemporary pop / rock / electronics / dance as well as a wide spectrum of classical music. Inputs are very versatile, including optical (provided by my CalDigit TS3) and Bluetooth Aptx (both use the Kantos’ decent built-in DAC). There’s even a built-in phono pre if you have a turntable. Perhaps you can score a good discount, now that we’re in the early hours of day 1 of Prime Days one and two…. I have older Sonos Play:1 speakers and IMO they sound dull and lifeless compared to the Kantos. (FWIW my reference system consists of an Audiobyte Hydra* stack -> ModWright LS100 pre -> FirstWatt J2 amp -> Zu Audio Druid V loudspeakers + REL G1 sub-bass.)
I've had the AudioEngine A5 since they came out in 2004, so I've had them 10+ years. I listen to them daily. They are used on computer system and I love them. They are very reasonable price wise and very reliable.

TAKE A QUALITY DIGITAL RFECORDING OF A "MUSIC PIECE YOU KNOW" esp from Concerts or Live performances you've been to, AND PLAY THEM AT THE SALES SOUNDROOM.....SELECT THE SPEAKER YOU LIKE MOST, SOUND REAL TO YOU ...and can afford.
There's some serious manufacturers and designers in Australia... I use a diy latfet P101 amp designed by Rod Elliot (legend). And the Aspen Amplifiers AKSA amps are renowned as being some of the best sounding amps ever.
4:39 The medrange will not be subjected to the Dopler effect as much, to give you clearer and more concise medrange...unlike some of the older KEF floorstander speakers I saw on RUclips. In a demo I saw the med driver pumping exactly the same excurtions as the two woofers in the box. What? All KEF had to do is put a 100 mf CAP on the med driver on the coaxial driver. At least with this new KEF model there is no treble and med wobbling out with the bass excursions (for that "still" sound). Nothing like it after dealing with single driver speakers for so long.
From the list I did pre-order the Decware SARAH 300B in Jan 2023. Maybe 2yrs and at this point V3,4,5? I am surprised Magnepan LRS+ did not make the list, but you would also need the New Subwoofer that was showed at the shows which seem to be still in development.
Saludos Steve, felicitarle por toda su sapiencia, vivencias, por su ponderación y compartirnos tan excelsos videos. It would be very interesting if you could review some of your fellow You Tubers , Tweakerman's cables. He shows how to make them, but they aren't for sale to anyone, by the way.😉
Maybe this idea to spend less on speakers comes from Tiefenbrun conviction. He said in interveiws: ....They said the turntable didn't matter; I said it was critical. They said the speaker was the most important thing; I said it was the last thing to worry about. .. This is not my conviction: souces are as equal importent like speakers, like everything.
I don't really get the "warm and sweet" thing. Higher rez can be a little biting on compressed and bad recordings, but without the neutral detail you lose the "sweet" nuance in the more detailed and extended roll off. I'm basing this on my JC1 mono blocks system, so I might prefer a warmer amp if it isn't so smooth, but the "sweetness" is still lost in my opinion. You need the detail, extension and nuance to really hear the "sweetness". I just don't think "warm" and "sweet" are the same and go together. Unless you are referring to poor recordings that are inherently harsh, thus muffling it with "warmness" would be "sweeter". Neutral sweetness doesn't need to be warmed up and would only see "sweet" losses if attempted.
Really wish you could review Wilson's Sabrina X speakers. I have a small California bungalow, so I think speakers that would work in yoor apt would work in my house. You already reviewed the Vivid's Kaya 25's, which are the baby brothers of the other speaker I'm interested in - the Kaya 45's. So would love to hear your opinion on the Sabrina Xs vs the 25's.

From the list I did pre-order the Decware SARAH 300B in Jan 2023. Maybe 2yrs and at this point V3,4,5? I am surprised Magnepan LRS+ did not make the list, but you would also need the New Subwoofer that was showed at the shows which seem to be still in development.
LRS+ came out in 2022
What about the JBL Flip…..heaven sent to be end of game!
That Vidar amp looks like a real piece of schiit. (Oh come on! Like none of you thought of that joke!!!!)
I have walked out on every zu. Viewing. This guys had cotton in their ears 😂
Hi, will you tell us why you've never let us hear one track of music with your reviews?
Steve, you keep promising to review the Outlaw Mark ii Amplifier. Please! Soon?
Sorry I don't recall promising to do it, because I'm not going to do it. I reviewed the original back then, it's a fine stereo receiver.
Klipsch nines, best bang for the buck of 2023, that's my vote. Prove me wrong.
The Darth Vadar 2
It would be very interesting if you could review some of your fellow You Tubers , Tweakerman's cables. He shows how to make them, but they aren't for sale to anyone, by the way.😉
Maybe this idea to spend less on speakers comes from Tiefenbrun conviction. He said in interveiws: ....They said the turntable didn't matter; I said it was critical. They said the speaker was the most important thing; I said it was the last thing to worry about. .. This is not my conviction: souces are as equal importent like speakers, like everything.
There's always a Viewer System of the Day. No need to tell us every time. Lol
I'm warming to this also, sweet 👍
"The guys at Schiit" hee hee hee.
First listener.
Aka the most OVERPRICED list of 2023 or anytime. Period.
Good luck 👍
3 Billiard cues?................................................
Nope, it's two tripod stands.....lol 🔈🔉🔊
Where is DS AUDIO cartridge and phono ?
Steve all those picks are for the rich. Anything for us struggling working class folks?
Well, I do my best to cover affordable gear that rises above the fray. Klipsch RP 600 M, IOTAVX, Schiit, Zu DW, Emotiva, Dayton, Monoprice, etc
They've been around for three+ years, I almost always review new products.
Woot!! 😎👍
are you burning your pink floyd record?
i definitely want to see the products not you. More images of the items along with the price would be much better.
No LTA?
I didn't review the LTA integrated amp this year, that was November.
no Mofi speakers ?
I didn't review any this year, but the sourcepoint 8 speaker review is in the works
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac Apologies , I'll look forward to your thoughts ..
