It's FromSoft's fault for having such incredibly vague, sometimes flat-out wrong info on their update notes. It genuinely feels like they use Google Translate or something to translate them from Japanese to English.
This is a problem within their games, as well. A lot of basic information simply isn't shown, and rather implied. For example, why don't spells show their damage type, damage, range, etc? All they show is their FP cost. Talismans don't show numbers, like how much the Crimson Amber Medallion increases your HP by. Upgrading your Scadutree Blessing doesn't tell you how much your damage and resistances increase by each level since using Scadutree Fragments can't be done on your status screen.
Heck, the Carian Sorcery Sword, a CATALYST, doesn't even show its spell scaling.
Want to know any of that stuff? Look it up on the wiki, lol!

Basically, no other youtuber is worth watching when it comes to understanding patches. While they prioritize subjective "testing" and a simple vocal readover of the notes (which as we all know often tell us next to nothing) to get their video out ASAP, Chrightt gives us intel down to the numbers + nuance. Let's go.

Having those weapons with the normal MV of their respective classes heavies and charged heavies would be perfectly fine because the throwing attacks already deal very low stance damage.

The smithscript cirques don't have damage dropoff like the hammer, axe, and spear do, they deal full damage even at max distance. They're still good weapons, but all the other smithscript stuff definitely needs help.
Also for some reason the smithscript spear's attacks cost WAY more stamina than other spears, or other smithscript weapons. If you observe your stamina bar while doing a running heavy attack particularly, you'll see a huge chunk get deducted twice in quick succession.

The spear is ironically the worst weapon to use at range, at least out of the Smithscript weapons I've tried (spear, axe, greathammer). The hammer is your best option if you want to hit something hard from a distance, and the axe, while having range just as bad as the spear, has it's very versatile jumping throw that allows you to keep the pressure up while being evasive. Don't even try using the spear on Torrent; the only way you're gonna do any appreciable damage with the throw is at close range, and at that point you may as well use a better weapon.
Even after the scaling nerf the axe and hammer both still feel fine to me on a flame art infusion (at RL60+12), haven't tried the others. I wanted to try the Golem Fists but from what I've heard they're not worth the time it takes to farm for them. I'd like to see the effect the Arrow's Reach Talisman has on them be the baseline and remove that interaction altogether just so I can free up a slot for something like Bull-Goats or Great-Jar's Arsenal, and an increase to their poise damage probably wouldn't hurt, especially for the hammer; the risk vs reward for getting a fully charged hammer toss off during a boss fight is incongruent with the time and stamina cost, the least it could do is some decent stance damage.

Since this felt more like a hotfix patch for bugs, i really hope that with the next real patch they address some of the weapons and incantations/sorceries, most of them are really cool designed, but the damage numbers still need a lot of tweaking to make them balanced/viable.
I don’t need them all to be viable for pvp, i can’t even speak for that because the only multiplayer stuff i do is co-op, but it feels really underwhelming and not very satisfying, if for a lot of the new stuff, there’s just a better alternative from the base game. Don’t get me wrong, i don’t want them to be better than the base game stuff, just on par.

Also yeah the carian sword before was absolute trash as a catalyst. I haven't tried it out since the update, but as an int build in NG+... i still expect very little from it. It's the best Colossal Sword for going Flame Art, and Flame Skewer and Flame Spear are both great new options for Ashes of War that have the projectile portions scale with your Faith, and of course going Faith gives you access to the new amazing Fire Serpent and the old reliable Catch Flame. It has the superior poking heavy attacks of the Zweihander that pseudo-animation blends with crouch pokes as both moves having very similar startups, while also having the crouch poke into light attack true combo of the Godslayer's Greatsword, both of which the GUGS does not have. I'm fucking livid about these Smithscript nerfs. I'm trying to do another playthrough post nerf and they do NO damage. The best build I can make is a Guard Counter build with the deflect tear. The range the Cirques get are great for it, but they do absolutely fuck all. No poise, no damage, middling status and worst of all, they broke the logic they put forth with the Erdsteel Dagger, that innate faith on physical only scales physical damage. 99 in Str, Dex, Int, and Faith on a Cold affinity gets barely 700 damage and there isn't a single affinity that can take ANY WEAPON BUFFS AT ALL. Literal garbage. They should have just nerfed the Flame Art, Sacred, and Magic infuisions' Faith and Int scaling instead.
Edit: The downside of having weapons that can be thrown should be the lack of stance damage. Having a lack of actual damage as well is too much and adding the fact that they can't get weapon buffs makes it so much worse. I understand that engine limitations probably necessitated the lack of weapon buffs, but all the smithscript weapons should be on the high end of their classes' damage to make up for that. It doesn't need to be 20%, even 5% more than the next best is perfect.

Of the 103 weapons, and like, what is it, 50 spells, why are so many so unbelievably bad? And why are they so timid about any of them actually being not unbelievably bad?
It's not like these things are even above the best stuff from the base game. You still have Rivers of Blood, the Blasphemous Blade, Moonveil, Night Comet, Rot Breath. Many of these HAVE been nerfed, in a way that preserves their basic utility.

IMO, regarding throwing weapons in general - if they don't triple the cut-off range/normal range, they should at least double (or even triple) the damage of throwing attacks.
Like, specifically just the throwing attacks.
And I say "throwing weapons" because it's not exclusively a problem for smithscript weapons. Messmer's Spear is a bit lackluster on the throwing attacks, only being sort of cool when charged due to the delayed detonation having some niche uses.
Hells, for every throwing attack at far range, a fully charged toss is less damaging than a simple R1 in melee. It only outdamaged a light attack at melee range. Some even did comparable damage to a dagger R1. This was even on elemental infusions before the patch. It's... genuinely pathetic.
Smithscript (and related weapons) throwing attacks need a god tier buff.

One of the fixes was that they fixed the affinity of Fire Knight's Greatsword or something like that. I was hoping it was the fact that when elemental infusing it (at least with Cold and Magic) it loses its fire damage, or at least the fire damage property, so you can't reset frostbite with it. They didn't fix that. Maybe it's actually intended but I feel it wouldn't be as op as it sounds if they changed it.

The throwing weapon damage drop off feels unreasonably steep. Like, sure, they don't want to give you an infinitely spammable effective ranged attack, but the range is already pretty short-they drop off so fast rn that they really just feel useless outside of basically melee range and this means that I would much rather have a normal heavy attack than that crap. The throwing daggers are the only ones that felt like they performed because their throwing attacks were fast enough to give you effective ability to fight annoying enemies at midrange. I never used them for a boss but I wonder if being extremely quick + having long reach would have made the throwing daggers effective for things like the final boss.

Here's my ideal rework for smithscript weapons.
In real life, the better a weapon is at longer rages, the worse it typically is at closer ranges. IMO these should have inverse damage fall-off and weaker melee movesets so they are at their worst in close range* and at their best at maximum range (this also introduces a sweet spot in that you maximize damage by landing hits at the peak of their range, rewarding good spacing with a higher skill ceiling). Also each smithscript weapon would specialize in what kind of "damage" flavor it excels at - high raw damage/poise damage/status build-up (relatively, eg. I'm not saying the poise-focused one should do the same poise damage as great hammers), and various combinations of these.
    Axe: high raw damage
    Hammer: high poise damage
    Dagger: high status
Shield: medium raw damage and poise damage
Spear: medium poise damage and status
Cirque: medium status and raw damage
...although this might mean swapping a faith or int stat requirement to arcane in order to improve the relative status build-up. An alternative would be just focusing on raw damage/poise damage in combination with slash/impact/pierce damage types for variety. _Something_ along these lines to give them strength/tradeoff niches while all being ideal at doing _something_ at range.
*Some might say that making them weaker in close range isn't much of a disadvantage when you can just quickly swap to a better melee weapon, but this does incur a cost to weight limit. If needed, an additional balancing measure could be increasing the weight of smithscript weapons to give them a bigger drawback as part of a loaded arsenal... although some might also say that the back pocket/offhand niche is one the coolest things about them. Maybe in that context, a focus on poise damage/status with low raw damage across the board would be ideal, making them truly offhand support. YMMV.

      Agree
This would have potential as a midgame weapon.
As a deep late game weapon it's a joke. A character isn't hurting for ways to bridge non-entirely synergistic elements of a build at this point, and the difference between slapping on a good weapon (that you already have) that doesn't even scale off your primary stat, and equipping a half assed weapon like this is just too big to take this thing seriously. Let alone picking up any of the weapons that ACTUALLY support such a playstyle, better than this thing.
Look at the Heysel Pick in DS3. Nobody but the determined is actually taking this thing to endgame, but it actually does have pretty good viability during the midgame... when you find it. It's not gonna hold up when you get to the optimization stage of your character, but it's helpful and convenient for getting you there.

swift slash, please...i'd like to introduce you to Milady, Blinkbolt, milicent prosthesis, and godskin cloth ;3
and raw damage isn't the point of the Carian Sorcery Sword, it's being able to use any sorcery as part of your moveset along with the rapier itself, thrust to slicer, or greatsword, or piercer, or gavel, or adula at a moment's notice, preferably while holding a shield in your other hand, the Carian thrusting shield is good for that. it needed a buff, sure, but it was never intended to be your main blaster for ranged spells

    • @aprinnyonbreak1290
      @aprinnyonbreak1290 3 месяца назад

But the rapier kinda sucks at this because you can't do guard counters, jumping or dashing heavies, ect. All of the actual things you want to do with a weapon like this in the first place. You'd unironically be better off just using a normal weapon with an Intelligence scaling Ash than this, if the idea of the three handed sword, board, and mage playstyle appeals to you, and you're allergic to weapon swapping. If only there were several weapons that excelled at this. But alas.
It would have actually been able to do what you're describing if it could cast as its ash of war (Hmmm if only Fromsoft had figured this out once before, and not lost the technology to history, like curbs. But alas.). As it stands, it's just a third thumb in the worst possible ways. Can't function as a weapon, can't function as a staff, and worse at bridging this gap than several things already in the game. This isn't a weapon that can cast, it's a staff with a better than average bonk.
This isn't a Demon Scar or a Heysel Pick, this is a Tin Banishment Catalyst. And the Manus Catalyst disowns this thing as a relative, since it excels at BOTH casting and bonking. More of a smash than a bonk in the Manus Catalyst's case.

Ok im not saying gazing finger is the greatest weapon ever but the fact that you can activate the weapon skill in the middle of miriams finger is nuts

I ended up using Spectral Lance on my Smithscript Spear. At this point, I don't even have a reason to use this weapon anymore other than using it on Torrent

the sorcery sword is actually the best int catalyst when you have around 40 inteligence

Because many people are entering this post-Mohg DLC with 40 intelligence.
Actually, some people are, but these people are using the Prince of Death staff, so don't really care about this one.

I tested the Bloodfiend Arm charged R2 with 46arc against NG+7 sewer omens, it did insta proc bleed twice, after the 3rd hit I had to hit the omen with a weapon which had 100+ bleed buildup to get the third proc. Then I tested the running R2 of a Godskin Peeler with Seppuku (~170 buildup with 250mv on the running attack), it got two insta bleed procs and after the third one it was enough to hit the omen with the Bloodhound Fang to get the third proc. I think it's safe to say thay the Bloodfiend's Arm charged R2 has around 200% status mv.

Im happy the smith Daggers are actually usable now. Before, you couldn't kite with them whatsoever.

Not just discus hurl being strong and spammable, but Nanaya's Torch is still arguably busted- the madness buildup wasn't changed and while erratic it can easily trigger madness on normal resistances in one burst at long range, which effectively true combos into whatever high damage ~2 second windup you want. Well other than command grabs like greatsword of damnation, but its not hard to 100-0 people with direct damage instead of glitched deathblight

The smithscript nerf was insanely disappointing, I was using smithscript daggers on sacred as a sidearm to my erdsteel dagger, and it didnt do insane damage, but it was a useful uptime tool, now its just straight bad.

I kinda like them with a status infusion to keep pressure up when enemies are out of melee range, mostly as an alternative to ranged options that have limited ammo.
Obviously, they aren't strong on their own, or even the best at what I'm using them for, but they're still fun.
So far, I like having the spear with Ice Spear AoW on it

I am so mad about wasting my ancient dragon stones on smithscript weapons. Their R2s are a gimmick at best. The high damage R1s on int/fth infusions were the real reason to even bother with them.
