  • Kingdom is my favorite manga and a large part of that has to do with Shin, inarguably one of the best protagonists in all of anime & manga. In this video I discuss why I think that from a pure storytelling perspective, then a deep dive into his character on a more personal level.

    Shin's explanation of the will of fire is one my favorite moments in kingdom

  • @zekdom

    Someone said their favorite Shin moment is when he explains the will of fire. I agree that’s one of his best moments.
    But for me, emotionally, my favorite is when Maron says that Shin was the most upset over Kanki’s death. Thinking about everything that happened with Kanki… to then hear Maron say that and seeing Shin’s eyes in response really hit home.

    Also agree on the emotional intelligence of shin. I also remembered hearing also that Mihawk from one piece saying something about getting support from everyone like some kind of skill.

    For me Kingdom manga is best I regularly read the latest chapters of Kingdom, Vinland Saga, Vagabond and Berserk. People think the other three is best because some big shot manga and anime related youtuber praises these three. But kingdom manga made me understand how a nation work, grow and it gives a great understanding of politics too. Some great characters like Riboku, Kanki, Ei Sei, Shouhaikun and many others. It helps you change your perspective of the real world too

      "kingdom manga made me understand how a nation work, grow and it gives a great understanding of politics too"
      Sorry but no. Kingdom gives me "baby's first political drama" vibes. While it is engaging and very enjoyable, to smeone with an academic background in anthropology, politology, international relations and history, it is an oversimplified fourteen-year-old's view of how the birth of nations and big politics work.

    • @ayayayaxd2639
      @ayayayaxd2639 8 дней назад

      @@athee420 that's his point, the manga made it simple for most of the people who are not really familiar with these topics. i get ur point too though, there are a lot of moving parts when it comes to politics especially when it is about building a nation.

    • @athee420
      @athee420 8 дней назад

      @@ayayayaxd2639 I agree it's an engaging entry point but that's just the thing. Kingdom didn't make politics simple _to understand,_ it _oversimplified_ it. It presents politics as though it was simple to begin with (it is not) instead of presenting politics, complex as it is, in a simple and understandable way (which is, admittedly, a very tall task).

    Shin is my favorite character next to Ouki. I love his personality. He's strong-willed, compassionate and a good leader. No doubt he earned the respect of many people, even the generals and King Eisei although he's just a slave before. Can't wait to watch Kingdom 4.

    Historically the real general said he could take a fortress with 200,000 soldiers later he loses. Later the king had to surrender his personal troops to raise the proper number of soldiers another general had stated he needed, 600,000 and returned victorious

    To me the Zui arc really stood out - Usually in Chinese history or literature, a lot of the battles are won through elegant strategies and trickery. But for Zui, it was a straight up meat grinder that they had to just… deal with. And somehow they pulled it off: the emotional payoff at the end was something else entirely.

    You forgot one thing. Unlike most protagonists that are idiots, Xin embraces it almost like Issei from Highschool DXD. His men make funny jokes about how stupid Xin is and how much of a hot head he can be. Xin embraced it full hearted. He’s such an idiot that he’ll climb the impossible wall just to prove people wrong. He makes the seemingly remote impossible seem possible with iron clad determination. He’ll become a wise general due to experience hence his advice is so profound because an idiot of decades of experience doing the same thing over and over again came to that conclusion.

    My only issue with Shin is how he's not growing as a tactician. Currently he's on the path to becoming another Moubu, all brawn no brain. That's not the way to greatest General under the Heavena.

      I thought it has been established ever since the Coalition War that Shin is an instinctual general, not a strategical general along the lines of Riboku, Ousen, etc. When it comes to Shin's making moves on the battlefield without the help of Ten, he tries finding where the flames on the battlefield are burning the brightest like Duke Hyou in where he can turn the tides of the battle. HECK, there was his entire battle of strategy with Gaku'ei in where Ten could not find a way to counter him so Shin had to step in as a strategist by using his instincts, leading to Gaku'ei's defeat.

      Xin becomes a wise general not a smart general. He’ll have so much battle experience that he knows that if x then y likely. He’s more a reactive than a proactive.

      @@anshuuu9708 The average anime in 2003 still looked better than the lower end of contemporary anime does. It was all hand-drawn so, unless the schedule and budget were both so bad to affect it, even the choppier anime still had good art. Which style of drawing you like is just preference. Nowadays, when bad, poorly composited CGI hits the screen, it looks like dog puke. I can understand not being able to push through it. In fact, this is precisely the reason why I skipped the first seasons of anime and caught up with the manga before ever taking another look at the show, which by then was at its third season and being animated by a different studio.
