@@KrheanosIsland the best I can say about this level is that Act 1's sky gradient in the background is gorgeous. That's about it. Act 2's lights system is cool in concept, but in practice that level is an absolute chore to play.
4:25 A puzzle setpiece in an ancient underground temple? Perfectly fitting. 6:30 I don't see the issue with the darkness, it's supposed to look dark. it's an underground pyramid. And if you ignore the light switches long enough for it to get that dark, well... That's on the player. No one can tell me that Mania's Oil Ocean Act 2 is a better way of doing it. In my own video on Sandopolis, I talk about how I enjoy it because it really pushes that oppressive feeling in Act 2. The music sounds evil and tense, the death traps are an actual source of pressure on the player, the slide is like those infinite looping rooms in old Zelda games meant to confuse those who would dare step into the temple. And the reward for figuring out the slide section is a giant ring. And also just knowing how to get out smoothly. Basically, it nails the atmosphere and the setting.
If we were talking about how setpieces fit to asthetic, then I don't really think that there would ever be a bad Sonic anything. The point is that infinite slides are not player friendly and frankly don't have a good reason to exist besides confusing the player, which isn't good. For your second point, though, you aren't really wrong. It does take a while, and I could never have it turn dark on me without me trying, and Mania's Oil Ocean isn't the way to go.
So..... dude defends _Labyrinth_ and _Metropolis...._ but _Sandopolis_ is a "NO"? Uhhhhhhhh..... was this dude first exposure to sonic games Sonic '06? Protip: Offscreen BS you can't avoid (Metropolis) and slow but time limit based puzzles that go against the core points of the game (Labyrinth) are objectively bad for gameplay and are MUCH WORSE than "it's boring".
actually my first exposure was team sonic all stars racing, then sonic 2. also, i did say in my sonic 2 review that I didn't like metropolis. also also, you cant really say the core point of sonic 1 is speed because honestly, it's not a fast game. yes, even i will admit marble zone and labyrinth are slow, but I LIKE it like that. It gives the level more substance then just holding right and jumping when needed
@KrheanosIsland while I don't agree with all of your opinions on this channel (I love Scrap Brain Zone), I absolutely agree with you here. My two fave Sonic 1 levels are Marble and Labyrinth Zones and Sandopolis is indeed bad. When Sonic & Knuckles released, I tried very hard to like it but just couldn't. I think it has some neat concepts that weren't executed well at all. At least the ghosts looked cool even if it was a totally frustrating gimmick. Edit: I think it would have been interesting to introduce the ghosts earlier in the game during Carnival Night Zone when the lights go out, with modified attack patterns so they're avoidable until the lights get switched on again. Haunted carnival trope. Further edit: I actually really agree with you about Sonic 2. I thought I was the only one who felt that way. When it came out and I had been playing the first Sonic for over a year and a half at that point (got Sonic 2 later on in '93), I felt 2 was a regression in a lot of ways. I preferred 3 acts. Emerald Hill looked ok but it was way too straight-ahead-run-right to actually enjoy it. Green Hill Zone was less linear and had more areas to explore. I remember being really confused by all the immediate hype at the time for 2 because 1 was way more interesting imo. I actually didn't like the Spin Dash at first because it seemed like a shortcut for speed but I have gradually warmed up to the Spin Dash since and prefer it nowadays. Just, as a kid, it seemed like a wrong move to introduce an instant-speed component because it felt far less rewarding.
5:02 this is what known as a pasive check, you're suppost to avoid it on purpose. Also there is a gimmick where you stick to the cealing and it slowly drags you to the end right? Well, all of them are skippable, just use the slopes below you and do a slope jump
@@CoolBlued That doesn't remedy it. Like I said, if there's a gimmick that is better off not existing by a wide margin, then that's not a good gimmick.
Also at this point of the video 5:00 you made an editing mistake you see you didn't turn off the background music you were using for your video when showing the example which made it sound like a car crash
This is one of the times that I just flat out disagree with you. I don't dislike this level's design in the slightest. I can't hate on the lights and ghosts, because it's super easy to keep the lights on and the ghosts away. And in the rare moments the ghosts do attack you, they're so easy to deal with. So yeah. I actually don't hate this level, probably unlike a lot of people.
Sandopolis, is a good zone, it’s just bad cause you can get the 10 minutes to end it. After all the music combines with the level of a desert with no life, just you or you and tails. The second act in the pyramid is way too long, but the music is a banger! I like more zones than Sandopolis but still is really good level, the mechanics are really funny when I first played the game.
Personally, I don’t see Sandopolis as the WORST zone in 3&K, maybe the 2nd worst, probably because act 1 isn’t so tedious, long, and doesn’t have those god forbidden mechanics in act 2. Although I do somewhat agree with your opinion as act 2 makes me wanna commit several felonies.
@FrenzyFanboy When it comes to Sonic, sand levels aren't good. Sandopolis Sand Sanctuary Goofy ahh Zone from Lost World Goofy ahh Zone from Sonic Forces Ares Island in its entirety
Sandopolis was always my least favorite zone out of all of S3&K. It just sticks out as a bad zone in a good game. It’s probably the worst zone out of all of the classic trilogy, Metropolis being a close second for its poor ring placement and unfair enemies, along with its UGLY color palette, ugh… and the zone is just harder than every zone in the classic trilogy. Don’t get me wrong challenge can be done well, but it just wasn’t in Metropolis Zone. But I do think the Sandopolis act 1 boss is smart. You have to do some thinking, at least on your first try. And Act 2 as an entirety is just… trash. The act is hard and then once you get to the boss it’s just like… was that supposed to be challenging, because I haven’t lost a ring…
Isn’t that what fans are supposed to do, talk about the franchise they like? Is it wrong for us to have and share our opinions, no matter how minute the thing we are talking about might be?
