      I think their first mistake was wearing all that armor. Don't they know that being quick and nimble is what it's all about? School girl uniform with a mini-skirt would have served them much better.

    I thought Space Hulk was a game about "The Incredible Hulk" fighting aliens in Space.
    Nope.

    That's always been a problem I've had with Warhammer: despite their impressive suits and armour, nothing seems to have trouble getting through them. Seems like they might as well be fighting in shorts, and at least that way they'd be comfortable.

      True. But I guess they have to balance it.

    • @ToozdaysChild

      As a player of the tabletop, Terminator armor and it's equivalents in other armies are still very effective. It grants a 2+ armor save (The best possible) and a 5+ Invulnerable save that you can take even if you get hit with something with high enough Armor Penetration. If your opponent doesn't have many AP2 weapons, a squad of Termies can effectively become a walking brick wall.
      That said, for obvious balance purposes, most armies have several options of weapons or units that can counter Termies by invalidating their high armor save. In the case of Genestealers, they have the Rending special rule, which basically means that all of their melee attacks have a 1 in 6 chance of ignoring armor.

    I own Space Hulk : Death Angel, the card-based game, and I really enjoy it. Horrid rulebook, but great components, great system, harsh, good solo and multiplayer (coop) play modes. And it's $25 (if not less ...). Recommended !

    You know what the best Warhammer 40K game ever would be? A 4X strategy game where you play as the Emperor uniting all the human worlds. It would be perfect. You would have to conquer planets to establish trade routes, purge xenos and chaos, and find all the primarchs. It has to be done.

    • @TrekPraxis
      @TrekPraxis 11 лет назад +2

      It has to be done, but it won't because GW will re-release and update every little thing they can to get as much money as humanly possible before they even consider doing new stuff, and god forbid they ever advance the lore.

    • @atreides213
      @atreides213 11 лет назад +2

      KingofCheddarCheese I know, right? I'm still waiting for when the main Tyranid forces finally enter the Imperium and almost wipe out mankind.

    • @Peterowsky
      @Peterowsky 11 лет назад +2

      KingofCheddarCheese Not so much advancing the lore since it is already there. The emperor searching for the primarchs and re-conquering the galaxy with his sons, the grey knights and mass-produced superhuman soldiers based on the primarchs. Hell, I'd kill for something like that, or something set on the Horus heresy, or even before that when the first power armours and genetically enhanced soldiers were conquering earth under the Emperor from many tribal warlords...
      But that would be Warhammer 30K.

    • @ChaplainIdaeus
      @ChaplainIdaeus 11 лет назад +1

      This, so much, this.
      However, I could see if there was ever any combat it would get repetitive IF it was a shooter-type game, since I mean c'mon, you're the GOD-EMPEROR OF MANKIND. It's not necessarily hard to kill something. If it's an RTS or a TBS game where you can control legions of Astartes, the Primarchs, and the other forces of the Imperium, I could see it being a LOT of fun.
      That's just combat though. I couldn't imagine how fun it would be to do all of the other galactic conquest-esk stuff. " *Warhammer 40,000: The Great Crusade.* " That is, if it were to be based in that era. Current 40k would be just as awesome, nonetheless. Too bad it won't happen, as the last 3 replies have proven.

    • @atreides213
      @atreides213 11 лет назад +2

      Idaeus Asmodae III
      I did say '4X Strategy game', not 'shooter-type game'. But it could happen. It wouldn't even require advancing the lore, since it's just the Emperor's Great Crusade.

    The old Lore for Warhammer 40K made sense, especially the Heresy War, but now the new lores that are coming in are.. Excuse my language "Fucking Retarded". A entire chapter being obliterated is a very, very rare case unless its a massive war pitting between two rivaling chapters. I mean some of the Warhammer 40K games where nice like the old Space Hulk games, Dawn of War, and some further back.
    But the main concern would be reading up the actual story on how it came to be, Space marine, Chaos, Eldar and so forth. I got similar books that have most of the lore written in about how the Chaos marines managed to wipe certain Space marines to fight against their brothers, The Angel Forge and so forth. So not just play the game, read it too.

    As an enormous fan of the Space Hulk board game this game is all I could have really asked for. I love breaking the board game out but when I don't feel like spending an hour putting corridors down, I can just boot this up and have a good time.
    The idea of polishing it all up and making a more believable experience doesn't matter. This games audience is clearly fans of the board game as is. Would be nice to see a map creator though.

  • @SusCalvin

    Space Hulk used a lot of 1st edition concepts, not as much as Necromunda and Gorkamorka. A lot of weapons can lower your armour save. Terminators rolled 2D6 against an armour save of +3 (where a normal marine just rolled 1D6 and iggies rolled their 6+ or 5+ flak vest). Iggy armour went down to nothing when heavy weapons shot them, while marines just got a worse save. Terminators didn't really want to stand around in the open. All infantry could benefit from cover, so the best thing was to put the terminators behind a hedge and have them support with their stormbolters. The energy shield terminators carried gave them what we'd call an invuln save today, a min 4+. And genestealers are pretty good at just that job, ripping up armour.
    In one of the earlier versions of Space Hulk you could toss in all sorts of troops inside a hulk. Iggies in a space hulk were smaller than a terminator so they could walk in pairs and shoot over their shoulders. So each direction could have fire from four iggies at a time.

  • @xkaliberx
    @xkaliberx 11 лет назад

    Ok, longer explanation, aside from Terminators being able to carry ordanance that wipes out Genestealers quickly (Storm Bolter that Terminators use 1 handed is equivalent to 2 Heavy Bolters for starter, they use full sized Power Fists as default, often with Chainswords attached, etc), the weapons utilized by Terminators are too heavy to allow any kind of agile movement at all. A Heavy Flamer or Storm Bolter requires two hands to use and that doesn't account for ammo storage or weight....

    Which results in cases of zero gravity or having to operate in a vacuum. Terminator armour is fully usable in these conditions and if I remember correctly the boots use gravity or magnetic tethering to keep them on the ground, so even if a Space Marine was used, he'd have to be practically glued to the floor regardless, negating any kind of movement or speed bonus. On top of this, every Terminator is a veteran Space Marine awarded usage of the armour - they're the equivalent of the Rangers.

    A funny story: in grade school I had a friend who had the board game. We never played it, and didn't know anything about GW stuff yet, but I did notice what looked like orcs among the miniatures and asked why they were there. My friend just said they were space orcs and left it at that. To this day I don't know why they had those ork miniatures.

    The board game has a timer for the Space Marine player, while the Genestealers get all the time they need. As you lose captains, you lose time to issue orders. It's a legacy feature of the board game. I'm personally glad it's there as a hardmode.

    So glad i got this on steam sale. Its the fucking boardgame from 2009 and the sad thing is the mission are even from the boardgame from the fucking early 90's. Im not impressed, i just want Dawn of War 3 and Space Marine 2. This game just left a bad taste in my mouth steam sale with 66% off was not enough for this. Only reason i got this was coz im a 40k fanboy, i also got shit for calling that bullshit the ENTIRE CHAPTER invading a space hulk ?! and getting pwned hard ?! a chapter that was around during the crusade times when they were legion, fucked up that bad ? really ? But yeh its lore WTF !?

  • @thenedain
    @thenedain 11 лет назад

    All Space Marine chapters generally follow the Codex Astartes, even the Chapters that have their own interpretations like the Dark Angels, Blood Angels and Space Wolves. While none of them are as strict as say the Ultramarines, they still follow the same basic rules modified for their home planets and cultural backgrounds. The "name of the Primarch" line is just a way of adding import to it, kind of like Thor saying "By Odin!", and I don't think it's meant to be taken literally.

    What he said about making a interpretation of Space Hulk might be better instead of a direct digital copy, makes even more sense when considering your point. Whether you keep or tweak the original Space Hulk system for the digital version, either way it has a lot of untapped potential without all those other factions and playstyles. Multiplayer would be a much bigger thing with more options.

    there was a little game released awhile ago called alien assault, which was basically a re-creation of space hulk in a 2d turn based game.. just with all the names with non-warhammer names. However it did have a mod released that brought back all the warhammer names/visuals called Space Hulk MK (or MK2). There is a sequel in the making called Alien Assault 2: Evolution.

    Relic were part of THQ, who are now bankrupt, and was acquired by Sega. They still have rights to make 40k games and maybe working on "Dawn of War 3" soon. Bear in mind one thing: Relic made Company of Heroes and used Essence Engine v1 and v2 to make Dawn of War 1 and 2. Company of Heroes 2 just came out (EE v3) and if it's successful they may plan to use that to create "Dawn of War 3". Depends how they plan to make RTS games even better in future. Relic haven't abandoned GW yet, so don't worry.

    Some board games I -totally- am okay with a straight port with no advances. Take the Steam version of Ticket to Ride - it's got no bells and whistles (well, figuratively. It actually does have bells and train-whistles as sound-effects). They just made it extremely well and made it work perfectly fine. Me and my friends love it and it lets us play one of the great board games of all time even though we're all across the world.

    The Space hulks themselves are often made up of tight, long corridors. This means that as agile as a Space Marine may be, compared to a Terminator, they aren't going to run far or be able to dodge enough attacks to make any kind of difference. Don't forget that Space Marines are already huge guys, even without the Terminator armour. Next, in relation, is the composition of Space Hulks: These are huge, derelict shells that often have hull fractures, or disintegrating chasis...

    As to the question why send terminators in in the first place: genestealers ignore armor. normal marines would die in one hit, terminators have an invulnerable save (especially with shield) that allows them to not instantaneously die.

  • @thenedain
    @thenedain 11 лет назад

    To that note, the same holds true for the Blood Angels and their deviations: it's all from their divergent geneseed. I've always believed, like many did in the old 2nd/Rogue Trader days, that many of the Primarchs had drastic deviations due to the influence of Chaos. The bigger, and more interesting part, is that all these fractures, from the split in the Inquisition to the wildly different chapters, just continues to indicate just how in decline the Imperium is. They're the next Eldar.

    I never asked them to change anything, I asked why bring terminators when spacemarines would actually be more effective seeing as terminator armor is just as vulnerable to rending claws. Then the other guy said genestealers didnt have rending claws back then. So the seemingly obvious response to that, at least to me, is to send in more agile troops instead of wasting precious terminator armour that only put you at a disadvantage.

    What I was pointing at was that FPS heavily relies on the machine you're using, not just the game.
    Also, up to 32 FPS, you have noticable changes. After that the change of FPS is subtle, and honestly, I myself don't get why some people are stuck up with
    'I have 65 FPS, and my experience is better'
    Unless humanity entered a new phase of evolution, then 32 FPS is about what we percieve as perfectly smooth, and anything above that is technically placebo.

    While I will definitely agree with the comments about the bugs and general glitches, I have to respectfully disagree about the mechanics and digital board game aspect. For that, it's great, a very nice translation of a tabletop game that's long since out of print and costly to buy on the secondary market, and like all other digital board games, it allows me to play the game with friends who are no longer local, or able to travel to a normal game night. For that, it's worth the price tag for me

    You have it the wrong way around there. All of the chapters that have their own codexs in table top are non codex chapters. This includes Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Grey Knights and Black Templars (Though they are now in the Space Marine codex, they still are not a codex chapter). There are also the Iron Hands, but they pretty much get forgotten about.

    The Blood Angels have massive support from their successor chapters, allowing them time to rebuild. The Blood Ravens are pariahs in the eyes of everyone except the Ultramarines, and get no support. (Inquisition hates them, Imperial Guard hate them, Eliphas won't leave them alone) It's no wonder that Boreale's idiocy crippled the chapter for years to come.

    1) I love this slow animations. Terminators must be slow.
    2) Game must not notify you if you forgot about your troops. You have 5 terminators in control in half of the missions. It is hard to forget about them.
    3) Such game deserve better animations.
    4) It is hard to find a copy of board game in my country. And it is much harder to find such game at affordable price.
    PS. There can not be any logic if you play spacemarines.

    what Prinz said, but also they didn't just face standard genestealers. They also faced hybrids with heavy weaponary - Aotocannons etc.
    They did release rules for playing with power armour marines too. you got more rines, but they absolutely sucked at close combat vs genestealers, and standard bolters were less effective than storm bolters naturally

    Its just Emperor gave decree to Malcador to gatjer some exemplar administrators, militants and such to be foreruners of Inquisitors, and some trusty SM.

    Google Alien Assault by Teardown. It was a proper 2d version of Space Hulk that they tried to get approved by Games Workshop a few years back but were denied and forced to remove any references to the Space Hulk IP. However, it is still the exact same gameplay as the boardgame.

    While all that is true, they STILL maintain elements of the Codex Astartes. They still use the same vehicles, armor and munitions to fulfill the same roles as other Marine Chapters. They still follow enough of the Codex to maintain their status as a Chapter without being openly declared heretics by the Inquisition and the other mainline Chapters. The Wolves and Angels are allowed to do their own thing, but only to a certain point. Fenris and Baal wouldn't exist if that wasn't the case.

    I haven't had any issues with this game yet, I think they've really improved on this game and I absolutely love it. But admittedly I'm a huge w40k fan and I love the games that get closer to what the actual games are like .

    i think their main issue might be that their models are too big, if they just scaled the graphics down, (e.g. make 1tile be 5meters) most of the graphics and suspension of disbelief issues would kind of "go away". Also, it would look more dynamic, the animations would have to, so maybe not visually "according to canon" anymore, but a modern-hollywood version re-imagining of the action pacing. But yes, that would still require more fidelity, for the animations mainly.

    As a Battlefleet Gothic player, I have to say that someone DID try this on the tyranids... They got the same virus back two days later, and the 'Nids had made it MORE deadly O_o

    They carry much more fitting weapons for Space hulk boarding (Storm bolters, assault cannons and what not) and their armor is very fitting for close quarters combat even though they are slow as hell in comparison.

    In games, when you press a button or move your mouse, the game responses faster if your FPS is high.
    If I have 30 FPS in a shooter game, and move my mouse, I can see that the camera is moving slower than what it should.

    There is a Space Hulk mod for Dawn of War: Winter Assault. It's real-time rather than turn-based, but it's pretty good. There are plenty of maps and objectives to do.

    TB I agree with you about Necromunda etc, their stand alone games like Blood Bowl etc are tremendous fun. I worked in one of their shops when Battlefleet Gothis was released, it was all we pushed for two months, then we were basically banned from talking about it.

    Agreed there. I've always found it funny that the Dark Angels have always been terrified of the Inquisition finding out about the Fallen when there's other Chapters out there that are way, way bigger heresy magnets. Grey Knights are especially suspect, and I'm not up on their fluff since the Daemonhunters Codex, but wasn't the rumor for the longest time that they were from the Emperor's Geneseed? I always figured that if that was true, that's why they get such a pass from the Inquisition.

    I think the reason they send in terminators is because only terminators bear the armament necessary to kill genestealers in vast enough quantities to prevent the possibility of them getting into melee range. And since genestealer claws probably go through normal space marine armor just as quickly as they go through terminator armor, why send in normal space marines who can only carry so much weaponry?

    Has that Incubation vibe to it, most certainly. But Incubation had decency of making it easy to see what's the line of fire for certain unit. Well, beggars can't be choosers, not that many TRPG / turn-based strategy games out there to miss any of them.

    Before the first hive fleet arrived Genestealers behaved almost like the aliens in alien, hitching lifts on hulks between planets, implanting humans with their genetic code to make cults. Little did anyone realise that they were scouts for the horror that is a Hive invasion.

    Hmm, you still seem to be trying to get personal with me. No matter, I think I understand what you meant now: that it was unwise to have wasted "precious Terminator armor" when even Space Marine armor would've sufficed (seeing how Genestealers didn't have rending claws). But I think that's logical, to send the better armored troops to ensure the success of the mission. It may make no sense NOW that they have rending claws, but it did back when the game first came out.

    the reason they send terminators to space hulks is because the forces of chaos and the ork hordes also use the space hulks for transport. Which means, terminator armor will protect you from boltor and slugga rounds,
