- Jonathan Ogden talks about the art of abstract collage, photomontage and digital art and a brief history of how collage came about. He also shares about some of the techniques used for both handmade and digital collage and how you can get better at the artwork you create through recognising layout, balance and colour in other people's work.

Wonderful! I’m 45 years old and have spent most of my life painting. Unfortunately I’ve found myself in a position where I cannot afford to buy materials. I take care of a terminally ill 15 year old boy and he has something like A.L.S. We have had fun painting and drawing but using scissors and old magazines to make something has become totally amazing!:) I have to say that this video was very helpful and I can understand where you are coming from. I am a musician as well and I loved that you mentioned making a collage is like making music. I thank you for the insight and so does my little guy. Much appreciation. Can’t thank you enough.❤️
love hearing this and keep making your art work! i would give money if i could to help you do what you love.
Best of luck my friend
It's like visual sampling! :O
i think the biggest question about digital collage that isn't answered often..even in this video, is where do you get your images?
can anyone recommend resource websites
pexels and unsplash
@@conectorciencia9881 You are one of the reasons the internet is great!, another questions is pexels and unsplash free to use images? or does it vary im about to check them out, thank you again!

I am cutting out some magazines out right now and this video really help me
Question about images and copyright. What about images from magazines? Or, do you know if there's a date when something becomes public domaine? Thanks! Loved this video.
I checked once by approaching the magazine I used and they told me although they where happy I asked it was not allowed. But I can only imagine it's different depending what you use😊
I loved your mention of the history of collage. I had actually studied the collages of Georges Braque when I was in high school and it was at that time I really got into making collages. I still like making them, though my other interests take most of my time. I find it a very wonderful way to create art out of elements that might at first look completely alien to each other! Thanks so much for the video! ^___^b
At 1:27 , to the right of Mr. Ogden, you can see a change in bookshelf where he got the book from
Haha! I was wondering if people would catch that :)
@Juan Andrés Opazo Ravanal that's what he said
I thought it was a freakin ghost! 😳😂
I just lately discovered this way of art. I'm very fascinated to it now, as it puts my imagination into new height. I'll subscribe thanks!
Me too!!
What... I saw the "Rivers and Robots" art work and thought "oh! He did work for those guys! That's awesome!" and then did some digging and felt really silly because you ARE Rivers and Robots. Sheesh... Dude, thanks for the awesomely innovative Christian music AND design.
Haha that’s right! I was actually a graphic designer before I was a musician :)
Thanks Jonathan for this- actually enjoyed hearing you talk about the similarities between collage and music sampling. I love your music because of the layers and can see now how you bring that in your art too. In my illustration work sometimes I use similar layering techniques but not with found images and usually just paint. Would be interesting to experiment a bit more especially with abstract images.
i didn't know collages were considered art. i love making physical ones out of magazines and advertisements and even if they're not good i like them uwu
Love this! My Pinterest is filled with collages. Love these types of videos as well. Did you go to uni for graphic design?
I studied design at college (age 16 - 18) but the went straight into work as a designer rather than going to university.
Set Sail oh ok, it’s pretty interesting to see how much you can explore on art outside of formal education.
I'm having to work on a Collage for my Class, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what kind of Idea I want to get across...
I find that most Collages online don't really have much of a "point" other than trying to convey a certain aesthetic and are generally unrealistic, but I like it when a Collage has meaning to it...
Any tips or thoughts you can share?
I love this account! Thank you for you hard work and dedication to God and His Kingdom! It’s inspiring and fun to be a part as a viewer.
So I’ve been wondering: I want to get into some creative work but don’t know what direction to take. Some days I want to put together a beat, other days I want to film and edit a video, some days it’s wanting to start some graphic design work... I don’t know. It’s like I get all these ideas but for the most part, they don’t amount to much. How can I better direct this creative motivation? How do you know it’s a project you actually want to do?
I’m fascinated by the work you guys do. I guess I’m looking for where I belong in the creative scene. I know someday I’ll create some really cool stuff!
Favorite video: All of them, haha. I was specifically fascinated by your Japan vlogs bc someday I may want to travel there and also do missionary work. Nearly every video I’ve watched has blessed me in awesome ways.
Favorite song: Voice That Stills The Raging Sea ❤️🙏🏽
Thank you guys!! God bless
Hey Raul! That's so encouraging to hear, thank you! That's a good question about finding where you belong in the creative scene. I would say there's no harm in trying out different things - create whatever you feel inspired to create at the time. To begin with I used to make all kinds of things and worry that I was spreading myself too thin between different creative pursuits, but as you try things out you start to realise the ones you're most passionate about, and good at, and then you can start to pursue those things. The main thing is just taking the inspiration and actually making something! Maybe try and carve out some time in the week just to be creative and see what flows naturally. Keep it up :)
Jonathan.
Set Sail Wow man, thank you so much! I will try out different things and let my creativity just flow. Awesome advice; can’t wait to see what comes out of all this. You are much appreciated! Hopefully I will hear you guys live someday.
From Florida, cheers! You keep it up also :)
You explain everything so well. The music is also perfect for this video. I think I found my new favorite youtuber
I've always been obsessed with creating art collages. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I love collage so much n I'm glad I found this in my RUclips recommendations🙌😍✨ thank you👌

By the title of the video, I expected non-representational images.
what is a good website to get those vintage looking people from?
1 year later and stil no answer. C'mon internet do your thing.
I know its been a while since you've posted this but I really hope you see this questions! I am very curious to know, who made the two videos used in your intro starting at 0:11?
Tyler Varsell is an artist for the NYT that does collage art. She really inspired me because I had never really seen or noticed this style before.
hi i'm starting to make a digital collage but i'm struggling to find vintage stock photos online. any suggestions guys... thanks!
I would recommend you doing what I do. At any fleamarket you will find all sorts of vintage books and magazines. find some there that you like and simply scan them in to edit digitally... just a tip... good luck. :)
WOAH WAIT YOURE RIVERS & ROBOTS. WOAH WHAT A SMALL WORLD WE LIVE IN
I DIDNT EVEN KNOW UNTIL I READ THIS COMMENT. WOWWI LOVE R&R
Great explanations and my favorite art form as drawing skills are not needed as much. Freedom of expression without rigid rules is why I am fascinated by this form of art.
RUclips just sort of randomly suggested this video and your channel to me. And I'm super glad It did. This was very intriguing. Great video. I definitely wanna learn more about Set Sail, now -".. Where faith meets art" - I LOVE THAT. My journey being a creator on youtube is to find and add to a community of digital creating artist - And I really do think I came to the right place just now. I myself am a Actor and musician turning video-editor and digital storyteller I guess ;) Can't wait to see more. Kind regards from a new subscriber ;)
That’s great to hear Rasmus! Cool to hear you’re getting into the video world :) Similar journey for us. We’re musicians and designers starting to figure out the RUclips side of things.
Wow, I was literally searching up a video for one of my digital art classes and this was the first to come up. I use to listen to your music lol I'm so glad I was guided here... You're awesome
Can I make collages using only my phone? Where can i get photos with good quality?
Dada artists were all about collages. A lot of the collages we see today even in social media came from them or were inspired by them.
Just subscribed :) this is cool man! Did you create that intro to? Can you make a video on how you did that?
Analog for life. Digital is imo is cheating 😒
Im a collagist and this is the first video I’ve seen on collage! Thank u!!
Thank you for a great inspiration. Where can I find tutorial of how you work With this kind of stuff in Photoshop? / Kind regards Lisa
1:27-1:29 in..... you did a bit of video collage.
probably watched this video over 10 times ! Sper interesting !
i’m passing a difficult time in my life and your video medrano me happy
Where do you get your images?
Cam Galloway Hi ! I make my collages with photoshop, and I never leave my home without at least a small camera. Pics can be taken everywhere, in full size, or just details. One just has to keep the eyes wide open ... and start "collecting" ! - Good luck. 📷
can you talk more about layout and balance?
Sure! It could be another follow up video, but as a starter, I think very often less is more with collage. If you find yourself adding lots of elements in to try and make it work then maybe it’s just a little imbalanced to begin with. I try and use just a few main elements to combine into something that sits well together, and then anything else is just an interesting detail. Also think about contrasting colours, and textures. If you have a busy image, you might want to contrast that with a plain colour. And a little tip that’s helped me with balance in design, is minimising the window for a little while or taking a screen break. When you come back to it after 10 minutes sometimes you notice something in the overall balance more than you do when you’re working on it. That ‘first glance’ can be really helpful to spot layout / balance, and things that just aren’t sitting right.
Well I dabble in collage art. It's a good way to express yourself.

So Silver Bright I usually go to my local thrift store, found some really cool, old magazines
Nice video, I just started recently, cleaned out my room found some magazines and decided to scan all the images in and messing about in Photoshop now, it's such good fun!
It is collage , not colladge, but he , I hear it often from English speaking, maybe it is hard to pronounce for you :) Nice video though...
Check out Lucy Dyson! Her work is amazing!
Really inspiring video. Can you guys make a video of how the GATHER project was born?
Could you do one that is a bit technical - on how to make a collage that will last? How do you keep it nearly acid-free? How do you preserve it?
This is one of those videos that I have watched more than once and am still inspired - thank you!

What about copyright laws when using a photograph from a newspaper or magazine? What are the rules when creating a new work but incorporating someones elses imagery? Thank you.
I really would love to know the answer to this as i'm a collage artist and want to start selling my art! It's so hard to find information about this!
What's a good application for making a digital collage... On Windows ( for my PC ) and on IPAD ? Would be great if u can help here... GREAT VIDEO BTW
Keep in mind that there is no right way to do art.
@theshaneramos on Instagram is one of the best in the game imo...
I can't speak on the emergence of collage as an *artform*, but I do know that the Hans Christian Andersen (the Danish author and poet) made a collage on a large screen in the 1870s.
Notamax and Raintree1969 are the Instagram accounts for collage artists I like. I am working on collage also, but for now, they are mostly in the disappearing stories (Lixoarte). The #fluxus hashtag has helped me find some interesting collages.

First you say there are no rules. Then anround about 2:35 you give us rules. And these rules are so important to keep some visual order in what is meant to be an expression of freedom. Yes! Balance! herein lies a RULE!! Heh. Heh Heh.
@muha_collages @stolenpainting @drocks024 and @kushu.lofi are some really good collage artists. Check their ig out
OMG Are those collages in the video your own works? They are ASTONISHINGLY BEAUTIFUL
Wow, ¡Thanks boys! :D
¡Time to making some noise with colors!

Yes, visual art and and music making have many similarities. Writing as well. :) the most important thing is to have the creative drive. Then you practise by studying others work abd expriment around.
love the video, what's the intro song?
Are you in a competition to speak REALLY fast? OMG! Desperate!
Well
If you resize an image digitally is just Photoshop work
Just when you thought the homework couldn’t get more confusing.
Aren't there copyright laws at using other peoples artwork? Just because you get images from magazines, I would think you really cannot use those?
Thanks mhn this helped to much🙏🏾
This was amazing intro for a non artist. Thanks
Yeee collage for life!

"It's more to do with understanding layout and balance..." how does one go about doing that?

Making a collage challenges the mind from creating a new idea from materials that had already been published. I created a one from magazine cut outs. I wish that some people would notice my work too.

Beautiful, succinct AND helpful, thank you!
hey, I've been wondering do you have to use magazines in your collage? can you just draw the things you want and add them or do you have to use magazines? please someone answers me
You can do both. You don't have to use magazines. You can draw things and cut them out to make a collage. You can use newspapers too if you want.
I collect many, many different types of paper. You name it I want it. The weirder the better. The common denominator is they are all on the thin side. I am always looking on the ground for paper with a natural grunge look. I love how this video encourages people to use computers! Less competition for us paper hunters. [smile]
Very much eloquent video about collage. Inspirational! :)
