Oh Daniel I do so love your music. You are an amazing musician and I am so honoured to have you kindly giving tips to me. I don't need anyone to say that synthesis is not music when there are incredible musicians like you, Rick Wakeman, Tangerine Dream and a myriad of other musicians who have used modular synthesis. I say - keep on everyone who is making incredible synthesis music - let Synthpunk have his opinion and while he is deciding you are not musicians carry on and continue making your incredible music. 🤩🥰

He also has had a flood of fake subs prop up his channel, not organic growth but 10 per hour on the average for 2 days.

In my case, I went from building cigar box guitars to iOS electronica, to hardware ‘fixed architecture’ synths, then modular, having more and more fun as I went along. The problem-solving aspect of modular (but not semi-modular, no) is part of the fun. It’s an exploration of roads never before traveled, rather than those well-trodden and mapped to death. But that’s just my opinion.

John aka synthjunk is one of the most jaded people on YT. It all started when Behringer rejected him as an ambassador for their brand.
He then took a 20 lbs sledge hammer to his Odyssey and uploaded it, instead of donating it to someone in need.
He has been having PTSD over Uli for almost 3 years now.
John gets a lot wrong, he knows very little about synths in general, so much so that he bought a P5 and said it sounded too digital, same with the MoogOne.
He bought a Cobalt 8x and told everyone it was the best sounding wavetable synth available, then sold it a week later after everyone kept correcting him that it was actually VA.
He also asked MrTuna if the JunoX sounded better than VA.
John's failures are wildly known, he is on his 21st account in a little over 2 years, he just knows how to manipulate the YT algorithm to allow him to appear in people's reco channel's.
He just floods uploads, nonsensical ramblings of a little man sitting in his basement telling everyone what to do, instead of just making music.
He also has made videos with death threats which shows you how insecure he is.
He brags about how many synths he has owned, yet he has almost no music on his channel, he is more interested in selling unauthorized merch of synth manufacturers.

For anyone to say someone isn't a musician because of what they use, they have to define what a musician is, and that's the problem... It can't be done.
A person who has no instruments and puts some rice in a tube and shakes it in a timely fashion, they're just shaking their hand, it's the rice that's making the rhythm. But they're a musician are they not?
The person who manipulates voltages and musical building blocks, who understands sometimes to a component level, to make fascinating soundscapes. They are a musician, are they not?
Someone who uses their computer to exactly choreograph a virtual musical score, they have to be a musician too right?
The person using pre set sounds on a keyboard, not knowing how the sound is generated, not knowing the intricacies of how the parts fit together. They're a musician.
I don't read sheet music, yet I'm a musician, just as the ancient tribes were before sheet music existed, before daws existed, before modulars existed, before keys had been invented let alone keyboards.
So if you can be a musician without any of those things, you can certainly be one with any other tools at your disposal. You create sound, you create an emotion. That's that defines a musician, not the tools you use.

I think we’re modular really separates itself from synthesizers is in the clocking variation. If you take marbles and apply it to other modules or even other synths through CV, you can get three different clock rates. At the same time. You can modulate them speed up and slow down and include random and probability, That’s where the magic happens with a Dave Smith synthesizer using the modulation matrix. I didn’t see a way to apply lfo to the clock to do a similar thing. Stopping and starting your sequence , but for me, that was the most enjoyable part about using modular gear. On a side note synth punks job is to punk the system from another perspective and there is humor in hearing that you can actually program chords 🎉, with a 12 row wall system

I just got off of a major flame war on Time Showbridges's channel on this topic, so I'll jump in again. I think that modulars work very well as studio instruments. You can generate unique, expressive timbres and make memorable recordings, as Wendy Carlos, Tomita and Tangerine Dream showed long ago. But I think that they are terrible as live performance instruments, and the fact that people try to use them this way just discredits modulars in the eyes of most musicians.
How do you use modulars live? Well, you can do "genrative music", where the instrument is in some patch which is mostly free-running and you modify parameters to change it as you go along (or even just let it run, randomly). This can produce interesting sounds, but they really stretch the definition of music from something planned, written and performed to just "an interesting sound produced randomly by a machine." You can try to perform interactively, but changing sounds is very difficult live, and compositions tend to become rather stale over time, as shown by your mouth-played (?) piece. Most commonly, people just set up a sequencer and start chugging away, which gets tiresome very quickly.
Back in the days of Mortin Subotnick, we could take a "Bleeps and bloops" composition as new and interesting. And his work has held up pretty well. But in 2022, this is no longer new and fresh, and fails to hold a lot of listener interest, especially when done on the fly in a live setting, where the variations are either minimal or machine-generated.
I tenjoyed the Samual Barber piece and it showed a lot of work and effort, which highlighted the unique capabilities of the modular. But that's because it was largely a studio piece, built carefully over time. The other live work I found to be boring and not really listenable for an extended period. I'm sure that live modular players think tha they sound great and are having fun. But the results are often not very impressive to listenrs. In fact, I've heard "car alarm" pieces that were literally awful.
Modulars were never designed as live instruments and they work very poorly in that role. Many modular enthusiests apparently disagree, but the proof is in what live works they are able to produce.

Music, not music, musician, non-musician, doesn't really matter... Modular goes beyond the traditional idea of what music is and how it's made. It's chess with the number of atoms in the universe times the number of atoms in the universe of possibilities. They are in a totally different ballpark from standalone synths so it makes sense to try and see what's created by them as non-music... but non the less, these are serious instruments for music and sound design, understanding consciousness, society, action reaction... etc.

Hi Daniel..... WE appreciate your sensible and reasoned explanations ..... but I also realize that SYNTHPUNK is not at all interested in things like "serious educational videos" or "logical reasonable explanations" ...... he is a COMEDY ENTERTAINER who is "totally in love with himself" ...... and he is doing what he is doing to create CONTROVERSY (something that I understand very well because I also do it myself on social media) ....... he is after VIEWS and he is correct when he says that he is NOT a snob and he is correct when he says that he does NOT hate anybody...... he is poking fun at other channels because ONE he has his personal opinions "he hates modular" and TWO he enjoys showcasing HIS opinions and THREE he (quite correctly) believes that the more he decries OTHER synth channels on RUclips the more attention HE gets ...... I think he is quite talented and I rather enjoy watching his "crazy" videos for a good laugh .... but I would never take anything he does or says SERIOUSLY ...... and I think when we make videos to refute his commentary we are (in a way) playing right into his hands and giving him even MORE publicity ...... however from MY perspective ALL publicity on RUclips is good for views and so when (or if) I "spar with him" it benefits views on BOTH our channels ...... simply look at the views on your own video above and compare it to your usual ...... by tackling the Synthpunk in a video you have boosted your own channel ..... just like he has been doing to all the other synth channels on RUclips ........ two can play at that game and it's good for "business" 😂 ..... I am not thin-skinned and neither is he..... in fact, we may be more alike than I would want to admit 😁.... at least in outlook although certainly NOT in knowledge.

No you are wrong, he does hate people, he makes death threat videos that are simply not funny nor cool.
He has stalked people on here out side of here, you think this is cool?
He is on his 21 st account in a little over 2 years and somehow you think you can justify his behavior?
If anything you're condoning his behavior without accepting any responsibility for his bullying.
Don't say you "know what he's doing" when clearly you don't.
He has built up a hate army that parrots his disdain for other's success.
Ask yourself why he does what he does, it's because he cannot get views from not being positive.
If you think he does this for comedy, you're meat shielding his vitriol and allowing his negativity to spread due to the lack of understanding of who he truly is.
He messed with people's channels that actually have upset quite a few, to some it's their business, and you think it's all for comedy?
That's why he has been banned from almost every channel on YT right?

You have to consider the majority of us have no idea of who he is before the video posted. It showed up on my recommendations list. As I stated before I presumed, he was serious. I also assumed he doesn't know how to use them. Up until recently I was not a fan of modular until I took a course with Sarah Belle Reid because it was apparent to me, I didn't know how to use them. @@jdanielcramer it's hard to be a teacher when no one takes you seriously, there is a fine line between education and entertainment.
When you cross the line into absurdity, no one will even remotely take anything you say as an informative insight of how things work/get done etc.
What you do is provide a fine balance and that is why you will continue to grow your channel, providing an informed journey along the way.
There is something very polar opposite between science and music, this I will explain:
I always get these feeds on my phone about how something something black holes blah blah, all based on theories that have yet to be proven, yet with music, we simply say, if you press this and do that, you can get this.
It's a proven science, because the Greeks created the Western musical scale based on mathematics.
This is a proven science that is now worth something in the hands of any creator, meanwhile, scientist debate something something that has absolutely no possible impact on our day to day lives.
So what we have here in front of us should be used in a more positive way, rather than what we have recently seen.
