    I have a friend that has a 2014 Forester (2.5i) that uses a quart of oil every 500 miles. Subaru says its not their problem. This a bad problem for Subaru but they will not admit it. I have a Outback and it will be my last Subaru.

    I have a 2014 Forester i bought it new. As of today i have a little over 120,000 miles on it. I have to add about a quart of oil every 3000 miles. I check it at 2000 miles add a little then at 3000 add the rest. I change oil at 5000 miles. First car i had to add oil in between changes. No big deal for me. However here is what i feel that Subaru should fix are the damn wheel bearings. I have replaced 4 of them. 3 of them on the same rear side and one on the other rear side. Three of them were under warranty as i had the extended up to 100,000 miles. Two of them was under the Subaru 3 years 36,000 mile. One of them under my extended warranty. The last one went out at 119,000 miles. I was at my summer home when that one went bad and not close to any dealer. I had to get an estimate from a local repair center which was $400.00 to fix it. Called Subaru Customer service and bitched about these wheel bearings. They were real nice and gave me 2 options. A 400.00 coupon to get it fixed at a Subaru Dealer or a 1000.00 coupon if i buy any new model Subaru. After all these years that was the only problem i had. I took the $1000.00 coupon as i will probably buy another Subaru when my car really dies on me. Not happy about those wheel bearings but i guess all other brands also have their problems. My dealership always took care of me and they always gave me free oil when i needed it in between oil changes.

    Bought a 2014 in the summer of 2013. Changed the oil in the spring and again in the fall. Less than 6000 kms., between oil changes. Always synthetic. It's 2019 today and I have never added oil between oil changes. I don't get it with the oil issue. My 7 year warranty is done or 70000 km and now I can buy the Cobb access port finally. I'm so giddy! Don't tell my wife. Catless J pipe, 4 inch intercooler. Just for starters. Time to play! It's fast now but like all of us it should be faster!

    Our 2017 Forrester 6 speed manual has been burning oil since new. They’ve replaced the short block at 23000 miles and it needs another now at 33000 miles (they tell me). Airbag issues the dealer says they “can’t find” window won’t roll up on occasion and the dealership also says they “can’t find a problem”. Worst car we’ve ever owned.

    CVT - what's the problem? If I wanted to slam gears from light to light I would have bought an STI or some other road rocket. For what I need in a car, the CVT works fine.

    i don't know subaru filter is better than Ultra Fram. Heard subaru filter is from Fram but don't know what grade they are using. Some 5w30 is not meeting ILSAC-GF5. Slight viscosity difference and others tune to European fuel.

    My 2016 Forester XT is awesome! Cobb stage one, Nameless exhaust, Mishimoto intake. Broke it in good, hard. No oil consumption, ZERO! After 4000 miles, 5.2 quarts synthetic in, 5.2 quarts out. AMAZING! Driven hard, fast, and it loves it. Subaru fan for life.

    Hi.Chuck (Charles?) - here in Australia I’ve owned 10 Subarus over 40 years (Leone, Liberty, WRX, Outback and Forester) my 1997 Forester got to $425k before the camshaft seized - never had oil/coolant level or head gasket issues and all these vehicles had high kms - only updated due to lifestyle changes - I stopped at 2013 models because of the CVT issues around 60k-100k for the 2013-2017 Forester/XV/Impreza models - I believe the CVT has been Improved for the 2019 onwards? It’s five years since your video and was wondering how the XT is now? John in SA

    This is what I tell people, If you mainly drive on a flat surface such as normal city driving or on a straight highway road then most likely the car won't have oil issues. Go ahead and push the accelerator when going on up hill trips and you will see what the issue is. My 2015 Forester did burn one full quart oil during a 166 mile trip and I had to travel thru steep hills at 70 to 75 mph freeway and one full quart of motor oil was gone just like that when I arrived at my destination. I added one quart of oil and then it was fine. A week later I had to go back to the same exact place and when I got there another quart of oil disappeared just like that. That is NOT good at all specially if you hardly ever tend to check your Subaru and worse, Subaru doesn't care if your car goes bad because they don't believe in making the "maintenance" light go on for you to protect your vehicle. They say it is YOUR responsibility to check and take care of the car. What a great company.
    I honestly don't know if every single Subaru engine has this problem, maybe is just a random problem, but what I do know is that the dealer where I purchase mine they have done a lot of engine replacements for Subaru engine issues and I personally spoke with the lead technician regarding my car burning oil issue. That alone says a lot. Has Subaru resolved this issue? I seriously doubt it because they keep using the same four cylinder boxter engine. They ain't using no new engine nor a redesigned one.

    Fumoto is flush and it’s ok however if you accidentally run over a coyote or something similar size! It could get caught up and it will either smell bad/smoke or break it! I don’t think it’s worth the risk. I ran over a coyote while on freeway after the car in front of me hit it first and it just went under middle of my FXT. My cars electronics froze for a min I kid you not. I don’t recommend it

    I had a 2016 Forester XT Premium, did oil changes every 6,000 miles, and it never burned a drop of oil. Traded it in after 26,000 miles for a WRX STI, which burns very minimal oil between changes, again every 6,000 miles.

    This is why I drive since new a 2009 Mazda 3 s hatchback 2.3 with 5 speed auto and 195,000 miles. I have been dumping money lately for suspension parts at all four corners and a trans module. A trans module is not a rebuild. At the end of the last 5000 mile oil change interval I got back from a 2000 mile Marathon trip in 50 hours. Car ran like a champ. Did not burn or leak a drop of synthetic oil.

    you know I think the oil consumption thing is weird. every wrx I have owned had sucked up oil like crazy. ej20 ej25 but now my fa20 is fine. I think people just don't pay attention to their oil till it's too late. esp when the dealership tells you 6k+ miles between oil changes(that's what mine says anyways). oddly enough my 15FXT and WRX doesn't consume oil at all. great channel. subscribed!!

  • @jeffcampbell6898
    @jeffcampbell6898 7 лет назад +1

    The Ford EcoBoost has the same problem, because of block ventilation. As the oil circulates and blows out the PVC valve it shoots oil directly into your intake and can cause oil loss. this can be fixed with an oil separator catch can that separates the air from the oil that goes back into your intake and returns the oil back to your crankcase.

    Had a brand new GTI about 20 years ago. On the first trip for an oil change, the BMW mechanic torqued the threads right out of the block. Cost me $300 to get fixed and always dripped afterwards. The car after that was a Civic. I put the valve in the day I bought the car and have been changing the oil MYSELF for the past 20 years!

    2017 foresters come with a plastic door over the drain plugs. Only on non turbo if I'm not mistaken. It is just push clips to remove it. Working for subaru and my wife having a 2016 wrx. I find the FA20 takes around 5.5 quarts to have it at full. The recommended 5.4 never seems to be enough.

    The short nipple fumoto valve is a better choice in my opinion because it doesn't hang as low. I owned a 2019 WRX with this engine for 40,000 miles, changing it every 5000 miles with Motul X-Clean 5w30, and it never burned any oil. I don't think it was ever an issue on this particular engine. It was mostly on their naturally aspirated engines that take 0w20.

      I actually have a 2018 Subaru Forester XT, only 15,000 miles, however if you are looking for true longevity buy a Honda or Toyota SUV, the Subaru is very pleasant to drive, but between the direct injection carbon built up and the CVT Transmission it is a real crap shoot that u are going to make it to 200k before needing to walnut blast, possibly a new engine,. and the CVT will most likely go out first before the 200k mark, however I do like how it accelerates and handles, it is a good SUV, but personally if i had to do it over again I would take a good look at the Honda or Toyota SUVS and only the Honda or Acura V6 SUVS. Good Luck.

    2014 - 2016 Forester had oil burning issue -- class action lawsuit , also class action lawsuit against the CVT transmission. Glad you're not dealing with the oil burning. (Had major oil burning issue and Subaru would not fix it, CVT was going bad but they wouldn't fix that either, and head gasket leaking) All of this below 80k miles, and I changed the oil less than 5k miles and took care of that car. In my experience Subarus are not reliable and the problems I experienced are pretty normal with them. I'll never have one again. Hope you have a different experience with yours.

      Earlier cars have it as well. I own a 2013 Legacy that also burns oil, but it is the only issue with the car after 85,000 miles. No repairs needed (and Subaru said the engine burning I have is normal as it is minor).

      Revo2Evo Mobil 1 has caused issues in Subaru's for decades.
      It shears and burns in turbos, non-turbos, in every weight and style they offer.
      I tried it in my EJ222, it burned at the rate of 1qt per 350 miles. Switching to Rotella lessened it to 1qt per 600 miles. Mobil 1 sheared and caused scoring on the cylinders.

      If I may recommend I use it for my mercury Milan v6 and that is marvel mystery oil it's awesome cleans your fuel lines unclogs injectors and gives proper lubrication to the fuel which in reality your car needs and today's fuel doesn't have that anymore since it has ethanol which I believe they use in the fuel to remove to help keep the moisture out

Is that a camera angle thing or do you think that tire has just been worn more? Is it perhaps due to that wheel being the drive wheel for the front axle or more so due to yalls driving habits? Subaru in general has had an oil consumption issue for along time, and yet CR always puts Subaru at the top in reliability. I've had a 2013 Subaru and a 2006 Toyota with the same issue and the dealer and manufacturers never acknowledge there was a problem. to me that's a big problem. Go to CR #73 cars that burn too much oil!

    • @Jason99942
      @Jason99942 6 лет назад +2

      Well - that is very strange isn't it. I'm looking at the latest Consumer Reports magazine (April 2018) & it ranks the Forester as their pick for the 'compact SUV' category within a Top 10 list. (Page 22). They also list the Forester and Outback as great picks for seniors (Page 34). There's no mention at all about the oil consumption issue, yet many people are still citing problems online about the latest Forester models.
      Are all the problems, those Foresters, Imprezas, Outbacks etc. with manual transmissions, or are CVT also affected?
      Consumer Reports does have a 2015 article that cites excessive oil consumption is NOT normal. Yet, Subaru in addition to Audi - state that a certain amount is normal. That normal amount of oil burning can cost a pretty penny between oil changes especially when synthetic oil is required. We're not talking about a quart here or there and a few bucks, we're talking complete small-block engine replacements under warranty - multiple times. What happens to your car when you're out of warranty? Good luck.
      This is how Consumer Reports seems confusing to me - contradictory in fact to even remotely recommend these vehicles. It really makes me question their recommendations at all.

    • @wrigman

      Oil consumption is directly related to break in..... Subaru says to not rev the motor past 5,000 RPM for the first 1,000 miles. Also vary the RPM during that process. I have followed this procedure with three Subaru’s. I have yet to have a oil consumption problem with any of the three.(14Crosstrek, 16Forrester 2.5, 17WRX Base). The people that have had the most problems are the ones that have not followed proper break in....

    • @wrigman
      @wrigman 5 лет назад

      Miss July It has been my experience that with proper break in( not over 5000 rpm sustained, for the first 1,000 miles and no wide open throttle when cold)your chances of oil consumption will be less. Just note...... ALL engines consume some oil during break in and even after. It’s not uncommon to consume maybe 1/4 of a quart between changes....

Head gasket job was done with the timing belt at 90k miles. No transmission issues - that's the deal breaker for me with new Subarus. Just don't trust a CVT to last that long.

      I actually didn't get 2 years of maintenance when I purchased. But honestly its more about the time saving than the money. It takes like 2+ hours when you count drive time and such to go get an oil change at the dealer. I can do it in like 30 mins at home, its worth the effort to me! But I document everything anyway, receipts, mileages etc.

    Unfortunately I am seeing Oil Consumption issues on the Impreza 2013 (Canada) now that we are approach our 5th year. The last two oil changes (at 7500 km each) we lost 1 litre of oil each change (down to first notch on the dip stick. Typically all city driving and oil change is done at the 6 month mark. Subaru recommends 6 months or 10,000 km (which ever comes first). Subaru also claims that it is ok to lose 1 litre of oil for 2000 km. So we are off to our first oil consumption test.

  • @Buc_Stops_Here

    Nice review, you do a great job. My parents and I have owned a total of five Subarus. Two Forresters (2004) my parents bought, two Outbacks (2014, 2015) my parents bought, and a 2013 Legacy I bought. Of the two Forresters, only one started burning oil (it was the 2.0 L turbo unit) at 140,000 miles. That is not great but not horrible. I have been the unlucky one with the 3.6L H6. It burns 1.5 quarts every 2.000 miles - which is not enough. It started burning at 47,000 miles. I change the oil every 5000 like you. Subaru claims that now i should put in 6.9 quarts (not 6 quarts recommended) and burn through the extra oil until the next oil change. I burn 1.9 quarts and check the oil level religiously as I know I will have to refill it once before 5000 miles. Subaru says it is good for the environment - my car is definitely not as I put out a ton of burnt oil constantly. I barely passed emissions last time. If it fails next time, I will have a stronger case for an engine replacement.

    Good video. But I want to ask some questions. Was the car driven before the oil change to warm the oil? Was the oil filler cap opened before you release the old oil on the bottom of the engine? Why do you nt remove the old oil filter during the drain of the old oil? By the way your garage looks tidy.

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 лет назад

      Yes it was warm, I did pull the cap to release any vacuum. I was less thorough in this video because I did a video on the oil change process a few months back. I didn't remove the filter while draining the oil because the car was on the lift and I couldn't reach it if I'm honest! Thanks for watching!

    Very nice video. Now I want a lift too. My 2011 Forester (non-turbo FB25) just went out of warranty and I was wondering if I should keep using 0W-20 oil (I use Mobil1 full syn.) I have seen some chatter around the web that the thinner oil is only recommended to improve Subaru's fleet mileage standard. Is there another weight oil that would better extend my engine life? Using very little oil now at 100,000+ miles even with the dreaded FB25.

  • @darrensmith9143
    @darrensmith9143 6 лет назад

    I have over 190,000 kms (118,000 miles) on my 14 Forester XT. The comments saying this engine doesn't burn oil are simply false. For the first 15,000 kms this engine used a lot of oil but afterward became tolerable in warm months. However, in very cold temperatures oil consumption gets worse until when the ambient temperature falls below -30C this car is basically useless as it will burn 1 liter in 300 kms. When the temperatures improve the oil consumption mysteriously disappears. Subaru dealer seems unable to even have a suggestion what the issue is. Also had a cat failure around 130,000 kms which the dealer did not want to cover with warranty, probably related to oil issue. I wish I had not bought this car. Engine is now running extremely poorly especially at idle. I am thinking this is probably a valve issue due to oil consumption and the direct injection not cleaning the valves. My last Subaru. :(
