Adam Tan Are you using Stevens (modified Musser) grip? If so, could you do sort of a tutorial with tips on that? I am beginning to learn about 4 mallet techniques and it would be cool to see you make a video about it. Thanks!
hey ,if anyone else needs to find out about try Jaffacter Instrument Builder Coach (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my co-worker got cool success with it.
one thing ive kinda noticed is your perch isn't always extended and sometimes it slips back towards the rest of your fingers. I auditioned for the Bluecoats DBC and the number one thing they commented on people all weekend was the perch.
There are a few ideas for constructing a marimba Attend a school or self-study with online lessons Make sure you are fully committed to it before you begin (I discovered these and why they work from Delfords magic plan site )
Thanks for the mention! I've been focusing pretty hard on my band teaching career instead of making vids, but man, you videos are of such high quality you inspire me to start back up again :)
Dude, I'm an older viewer, a guitar player with interests wider than most guitarists, and I just wanted to say what a wonderful change this makes from a lot of the YT stuff I see. It's very nicely filmed and beautifully edited, and you're a very engaging presenter with a great sense of humour. But how many people would slow their own video down so you can see they're faking it? (As one who's had to fake it on a few occasions, that little segment put a massive grin on my face, I can tell you.) I love that kind of no-bullshit approach. You have warmed my heart. Thank you.
Sidney Richard Wow thank you for your kind comments Sidney! I'm glad you enjoy the way I present these videos (even though you're a guitarist!) and yes I do like to make fun of myself a lot hahaha 😅 I appreciate it!
Dude... as you're here... what do you think of the music of Frank Zappa? He's featured the marimba a lot, and some drummer friends have worked on The Black Page. Any thoughts? Also, has anyone tried adapting any Liget for tuned perc? And that ENORMOUS rack of mallets in your intro makes me laugh every time I see it. I had no idea people even made anything that big, except as a custom job for a music store maybe. Love your stuff, dude.
Oooh I have played in Black Page! Xylophone part ;) I think Zappa's music is awesome and definitely set the bar for metric modulation. Did you mean Ligeti? There's a lot of Ligeti arrangements for marimba and vibraphone :) Hahaha yes I came up with the rack idea since people tended to just shove mallets in stick bags for storage - but I think they deserve to be displayed! They're literally just Ikea shoe racks with fasteners, tutorial here: ruclips.net/video/hhQa00Qw2rg/видео.html Thanks for checking my stuff out!
I've currently been playing percussion for 4 years, specifically marimba for 3 seasons, or about a year and a half. We have a winter percussion group during winter/spring, before marching band starts, which helps our skills stay up to date for the upcoming season. I will definitely try this cool warm-up, and hopefully show the second marimba how to play it too. I'm not cocky, but I know I'm gonna get first because I've had first for a year now, and no one else in the percussion who wants to play marimba is better than me. Our drum set player is pretty good at playing anything so he could probably beat me out if he tried, but the second marimba for a year wants to switch over to tenors or snare, and the possible second marimba player doesn't have as much experience as I do with playing marimba.
Gunilla Lindquist you can but it would still be the same thing, just starting on the right then going left and back up. If you want to be able to use the muscles in any permutation then I would do either 1214341or 212343 (can flip the permutation to start on left or right). All of these combined (1214341, 2123432, and 1234321), and their inverted permutation should give all possibilities for triple laterals
Yooo!!! If you work your way to seconds on both hands, the rotation in the fifths feel a lot better, and you can get better with fifths. You can do this for any exercise that calls for laterals. My teacher can even do it on the same note.
Hey Adam, do you think you'll ever do anything on concert snare drumming or timpani? I love the mallet stuff but I feel like you could expand to other parts of percussion a bit. Anyways, I love your stuff and keep it up!
Drew Neal Thanks for the suggestion man, I'm not sure because my expertise on snare and timpani is sooo bad at the moment hahaha... Rob Knopper makes some amazing snare videos 😀
Thanks man! I think another good way of doing it is (quavers) 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2 | (semiquavers) 1212 1212 1212 1212 and/or 3-4 3-4 3-4 3-4 | 3434 3434 3434 3434 :)
Please do laterals at tiny intervals. I am playing Michael Burritt Four Movements for marimba and need help building those chops for those tiny laterals.
Hey Adam Love your videos! I was wondering if you have any advice for adapting towards different marimba sizes? During auditions I found that its particularly hard to play on say a marimba one, when I've been practicing on a smaller octave marimba, my accuracy also tends to drop due to the larger spacing. Cheers!
Thank you for watching! This is a good question and it's why many competitions around the world allow you to choose your 'preferred' brand/type of marimba for performing. I think as long as you try to play as much as you can on the instrument that is going to be the one you perform on, you have the best chance of maximum accuracy. Alternatively, pick up a custom marimba mat that is the same size as the performance marimba to practice with at home :)
Hahaha... Mans, this is my favorite youtube Channel. I'm actually starting to make mallets for sale... I'm in a investigation sound for new materials and stuff. I'll definitely send you some when I finish it...
We have a warm-up very similar to this one, we just play the notes A, E, F, and A and going up we play sixteenth notes, but going down we do the sextuplets
I really like the new series! I like your content in general because of the quality. Keep it up! One question, how do you pick random chords that sound nice together? Is there an actual "theory" or you're a good guesser? 😂
Hahahaha I guess I should just delete this video then 😑 Nah I know my technique isn't perfect (that's why I said I'm not a professional), maybe I should do more of my own exercises ;)
I WISH I HAD THE TALENT TO IMPROVISE LIKE THAT!! THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL !!!!
DimpleBoy Hahaha too kind! I'm sure you could do it too 😀
DimpleBoy you do
Just got to unlock it
Captain kiwi True words 😎
It was a diatonic circle of fifths 7th chord progression in the key of A minor with a piccardy third
I definitely heard a major modulation, but it wasn’t at the end so it isn’t a picardy third
Hope you like this new segment! Let me know what you think :)

Yup I use Stevens! I'll see if I can make a tutorial on it, although there are already lots out there :) Thanks for watching though!

Marimbalogy Oooooh could it be the legendary comeback of Marimbalogy for 2017?!

The bit on the four-sixes on the random chords that sound nice, really sounded really good!! Going to try this warm up exercise. Thanks!!
Thanks for the kind words, Adam :) Will share on Facebook. Great work!
CaseyCangelosi Thanks so much Casey, you're always an inspiration!

I'm glad this helps! Thank you for watching :)
“A fellow percussionist who loves marimba. Me.” Same.
Same
Excellent video. Your exercise is a great in between to the Cangelosi one.
Thanks Jabari! I hope it's helpful in some way :)

That improvisation was very impressive! Coming from a fellow percussionist :) Subscribed!
You are too kind! Thank you for watching and subscribing :)
Thanks Adam!! this video really makes the Cangelosi excersises more approachable and adaptable! Iooking forward to more videos on here:)
Thanks for the suggestion! I appreciate it :)
Been waiting for a tech talk ;) love it haha.
Haha I'm glad I made it then! Thanks for watching :)
These are wonderful! I'm practicing for college auditions and it's helpful to see some exercises that are more free:)
Thank you so much Jenna, I'm glad it helps!
loved this weeks episode! this is gonna help me a ton!
Parker Stockford Thanks for the suggestion!
Great exercise, will use it myself as well as with my students! Thanks!
Do you play it 4321234 as well?

thanks for putting my comment in!! this is gonna be an awesome series👍🏽
shanna echeverry Thank you for the suggestion!
such a good Video:)
do you have other exercises to build up fast an one hand roll?
Thanks man! I think another good way of doing it is (quavers) 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2 | (semiquavers) 1212 1212 1212 1212 and/or 3-4 3-4 3-4 3-4 | 3434 3434 3434 3434 :)
This was great! More please
Thank you for watching! I'll keep making them :)
Grazie Maestro !
6:57-7:17 is my favorite part of the video
😅
You should review some Rohema 1 snare drum sticks, also love the channel big fan
Rohema! There's a brand I haven't heard in a while hahaha... thanks for watching ;)
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED!
Please do laterals at tiny intervals. I am playing Michael Burritt Four Movements for marimba and need help building those chops for those tiny laterals.
Also, Marimba ones don't have "Adam Bars" lol XD.
This is a joke.....
Hahaha I wish they had Adam bars... I'm glad this was helpful ;)

Literally me and all the other percussionists in my 8th grade year knew who you were.
Can you do a warm up to build permutations?
Yessss I will for sure!
Hahaha... Mans, this is my favorite youtube Channel. I'm actually starting to make mallets for sale... I'm in a investigation sound for new materials and stuff. I'll definitely send you some when I finish it...
Chris War Thanks for watching man! that'd be pretty awesome, I'd love to see what your mallets turn out like 😀
I love watching these videos.... and I don't even play the marimba...
HAHAHA thank you for stopping by regardless! Everyone's welcome here :)
We have a warm-up very similar to this one, we just play the notes A, E, F, and A and going up we play sixteenth notes, but going down we do the sextuplets
Love the humor
I've never heard of sixteenth notes being called semiquavers, thanks for a way to confuse my conductor
I really like the new series! I like your content in general because of the quality. Keep it up! One question, how do you pick random chords that sound nice together? Is there an actual "theory" or you're a good guesser? 😂
Twinx1900 Well I usually use the cycle of fifths as a starting point, that seems to work well 😀 Thanks for watching!
Was I the only one that started hearing Path at 7:00 (when he was playing "random chords the sound nice")?
Hahahaha there's a bit of deja vu happening!!! 😁😁😁
Koa its koa!
SuntannedFish9 it’s a fish!
Koa it's a koa fish
I know you use Steevens, would burtons work for this?
love it!!
What 4 mallet books would you recommend?
gclem96 Definitely Stevens' Method of Movement is still my number one pick 😀 pretty much has all the exercises you'll ever need
Mark fords "Technique through music" is a great one
Is it still Christmas in Australia XD?? Anyway thanks for the tips and tricks man!
Eric Qi It's always Christmas in the studio 😉
i just had to laugh at the spit at 3:10 ahahaha
If you love playing this exercise so much you should check out the
Paul Smadbeck Etude No. 2 Great content! :)
4:50 tell that to kevin bobo
Not gonna lie I had been doing this with the drum line In my band whenever they did triplet rolls. It’s the same pattern
It’s so versatile ahaha
semiquaver now makes much more sense to me as an American. 1e&a se-mi-qua-ver. 1& qua-ver. Using this from now on. XD
our school uses this technique called groove phi
Ah yes I have heard of this!
Anyone wondering what chords he's using?
I need sheet music for the last one 😩
It's just triple lateral chords man, don't worry! Dm7 Gm7 C F Bdim E A7 or something haha
Is that a split fulcrum I see? 2:11
Tyler Bateman I don't know what that is but you're probably right 😅
That poor node on your second mallet when playing 300bmp
Lolz love the 300bpm #slowmoswing
My crappy base boosted mac book speakers don't do this video justice
Oh yeah, well i can play the A flat scale
I didn't know ricegum played the marimba.
LOL I was just waiting for this comment
90 bpm, 110 bpm, 130 bpm, 150 bpm
6:56 😲😵
Ahahahaha it's not THAT amazing is it...
Adam Tan nah, its just you picking random chords that sound amazing, I admire your work. How do you play that?
Oh adam, get those index fingers out
3 deaf click dislike
Quit see sawing you hit knodes dont talk about technique
Hahahaha I guess I should just delete this video then 😑 Nah I know my technique isn't perfect (that's why I said I'm not a professional), maybe I should do more of my own exercises ;)
Okay I feel bad how expensive parachute chord especially in Australia
