This song was popular during the Civil War. As "Love Me Tender"'s setting was the Civil War (Elvis' brother in the movie went to fight and was thought to have been killed), this song was picked for Elvis to sing. The producers thought it should be updated to sell more records, so new words were written.
We have this song in secondary school songbook in Hong Kong. The songs compiled in songbook lead me into a deeper interest into vintage music. Now my channel has collected many of these great tunes
I just think this is wonderful, I have never heard this song or seen Jim as this production shows before well done you, we should cherish this and maybe it may make it on record? who knows.
I played this on piano a long time ago... like... when I was seven, and when I heard this song playing, I started to sing along with it. I miss it so much! And "Love me Tender" also is good; i didn't realize they had the same melody till I heard it on a school CD--about ten minutes ago.
I would listen to this song all day big up and much thanks for the person who posted it this person really knows what is real old touching music,much different from the rock an roll and pop we usually call oldies this one is very rare and powerful
Brand new granddaughter and I couldn't place why her unusual name rang familiar and finally figured it out - her name is Aerilee - this was one of my favorite songs when i was a child learning to play the piano
I guess that this was a song writen in the late 1800's. Elvis then later did love me tender in I think 1956. I think that, that is neat. I love the old stuff. Thank you. :)
Aura Lee -is- the original vocal version of this melody, & it was written during the Civil War. I don't have the info at hand, but I believe the "Love Me Tender" verses were written for the Elvis version. Either way, 1st time I've heard the original, & I love Jim Reeves-Thanks!
Yes, 'Aura Lee' is a forerunner to the more popular 'Love Me Tender'. While the instrumental acompaniment sounds vritually the same to the average listener, the trained musician will often pick up that some minor changes were also effected to the music score when the song was updated. I personally like the original more - but both versions will remain sparkilng gems for as long as there are ears that know what music should sound like.
Sad to think how our popular music has deteriorated over the years. But that’s what happens when corporations and criminals control our entire society.
this is the first known recording to have been recorded and it was recorded in 1860 i was born in 1897 and im really old and this brings back happy memories
This is the best version...the original was actually written by a english dude named George R. Poulton in like 1861...after it became public domain lyrics were changed by EP. The instrumental version with an orchestra is great too!
@grimTales1 yeah, aura lee is an old public domain song....no one owns it anymore. Another example is John Lennons "Happy Christmas, War is over"....it was directly taken from the old folk song "Stew Ball"
I started learning to play Love Me Tender on Irish whistle. But it never seemed appropriate. Glad to say Aura Lee does. I love to picture how it might have originally been sung.
The reason why that this sounds like Love me tender, is because it is. Copyright law weren't as strict as they are today. Many song back then were classified as imminent domain, which means you could use it for any purpose.
The song was popular during the Civil War, so even if they had more strict copy right laws, it still probably would've been public domain (expired copyright).
"Aura Lee" (aka "Aura Lea") is an AMERICAN CIVIL WAR song about a maiden. It was written by W. W. Fosdick (words) and George R. Poulton (music). ORIGINAL lyrics can be found here. It was sung mostly by Confederates, but both sides used it. The original words are far more beautiful, Jim Reeves missed a few of the verses
This is the original tune from the Civil War era... Elvis took the music and applied his own words. Love Me Tender was a different piece, which gets confusing when other people post that song under this songs title.
@mrmajder Hey buddy, this song, that I know of, has no defined author because it's age. It was written around the time of the Civil War, and turned into a folk song of sorts. It was ad libbed by many, such as Elvis, and converted into other songs with this music. Elvis just used the music and wrote his own words to fit it.
Sorry this is such a late post only just seen this but Presley never wrote the words Ken Darby did and credited it to his wife Vera Matson Presley never wrote any of his songs
Initially I thought what a beautiful song about natural things and it took me to a nice place but then it dawned on me... Orally, under the tree, _swallow_ and the sun _came_ with me. I feel like I've been violated. 😂
I never understood that they didn't credit the original composer when they did his. It's oky to use George Poulton's tune for Love Me Tender, but the sheet music and recording should have had his name. Elvis wasn't the only one that did that - it was a very common practice at the time. But I don't understand why they did it.
beautiful song! Although I couldn't help but notice how it sings of "Aura Lee" - "orally" which might be a little subliminally suggestive if you think about it
My a capella group is gonna do this song mashed-up with Love Me Tender. We're going to do a couple of Aura Lee's verses and then do Love Me Tender as a kicker.
When the blackbird in the Spring 'On the willow tree Sat and rocked, I heard him sing Singing Aura Lea Aura Lea, Aura Lea Maid with golden hair; Sunshine came along with thee And swallows in the air Chorus: Aura Lea, Aura Lea Maid with golden hair; Sunshine came along with thee And swallows in the air In thy blush the rose was born Music, when you spake Through thine azure eye the morn Sparkling seemed to break Aura Lea, Aura Lea Birds of crimson wing Never song have sung to me As in that sweet spring (Chorus) Aura Lea! the bird may flee The willow's golden hair Swing through winter fitfully On the stormy air Yet if thy blue eyes I see Gloom will soon depart; For to me, sweet Aura Lea Is sunshine through the heart (Chorus) When the mistletoe was green Midst the winter's snows Sunshine in thy face was seen Kissing lips of rose Aura Lea, Aura Lea Take my golden ring; Love and light return with thee And swallows with the spring MORE ON GENIUS "AURA LEE" TRACK INFO

Quite a few E.P. Songs were older songs revived by him. E.g. are you lonesome tonight (Al Jolson) Blue Hawaii (Al Bowlly) the list goes on.
According to me is this the original. Elvis Presley did it later with the titel Love me Tender. Sorry for the poor quality
Orally orally only way to gooooo
My dad used to sing me to sleep with this song when I was a kid.

Is it really about that, though? I didn’t find any information about the song having any perverse meaning.
I’ve since changed my mind after listening again. I think it’s my mind that’s corrupt and not the song!

Let's give great credit to Steven Foster for the original "Aura Lee". It was also a great barbershop quartet piece .
Not by Stephen Foster, it is
W. W. Fosdick (lyrics) and George R. Poulton (music).

When the blackbird in the Spring
'On the willow tree
Sat and rocked, I heard him sing
Singing Aura Lea
Aura Lea, Aura Lea
Maid with golden hair;
Sunshine came along with thee
And swallows in the air
Chorus:
Aura Lea, Aura Lea
Maid with golden hair;
Sunshine came along with thee
And swallows in the air
In thy blush the rose was born
Music, when you spake
Through thine azure eye the morn
Sparkling seemed to break
Aura Lea, Aura Lea
Birds of crimson wing
Never song have sung to me
As in that sweet spring
(Chorus)
Aura Lea! the bird may flee
The willow's golden hair
Swing through winter fitfully
On the stormy air
Yet if thy blue eyes I see
Gloom will soon depart;
For to me, sweet Aura Lea
Is sunshine through the heart
(Chorus)
When the mistletoe was green
Midst the winter's snows
Sunshine in thy face was seen
Kissing lips of rose
Aura Lea, Aura Lea
Take my golden ring;
Love and light return with thee
And swallows with the spring
