  • Hey there... Did you miss me? Probably not, but I just wanted to make a video about why the Nirvana tone recreation videos have stopped...
    Great, super awesome, super fun, incredible tones are coming back soon... Along with more story telling and in the future I will be incorporating more of my own music into my channel. Also, I just realized it's a Monday... I hate Mondays, so if you're like me, I hope this video will cheer you up! ✌🏻

    Wow dude. I just found your channel yesterday, and I gotta hand it to you. Your whole "old school" analogue approach to everything is super cool to me. Watching all this old gear come to life, and how good it actually sounds is very satisfying. And the original music you make is so full of vibes, and just totally refreshing. Without being insulting, its like you took the essence of kurts style, and just continued where he left off. Like, some of your riffs, and melodies could easily be mistaken for some rare unreleased nirvana tracks. Keep it up, and like everyone else has already said, a full album of originals would be very cool! Also love your editing. The video with your girlfriend at the end was very well done

    Check your voltage...your actual home AC power can fluctuate and mess with older equipment. I had older Marshall and Peavey tube amps that were hugely affected...yet others just weren't...didn't make sense until I looked on the back of the amps and realized some of these are expecting 110 to 118V and you're likely getting 120 plus from home outlets...I had access to an old variac and was able to find the "sweet spot" on those older amps...amp tech guy said that there was likely other stuff not up to par going on in the amp too but that this would work. I dunno...I'm not too technical...but not afraid to DIY and try things...

  • @WeLmSoN
    @WeLmSoN Год назад +50

    I think i know whats wrong with your amps, I have the same exact thing. My tube deluxe 68 reverb sounds different from day to day. Some days it sounds awesome, and really crappy in others, even max volume is different. I noticed that it depends on the voltage of electricity in the house, it is very unstable for me, as the Russians are constantly bombing power plants and electricity is sometimes 140 sometimes 250 volts. I also noticed that there is a huge difference in sound when playing with voltage stabilizer in a house turned on, even turning on the air conditioner in the room affects my amp, apparently it consumes a lot of energy. I think the problem is that the tube amp is too sensitive. And even your microwave affects the voltage in the house. Sorry for my English, but i think you ll understand what i mean.

    • @WeLmSoN
      @WeLmSoN Год назад +4

      P.S My amp is new its only 6 month old, all tubes are fine. I determine whether the amp is working normally or not, by volume, I clearly remember how it sounds at a volume of 2-3-5-10. And usually it is immediately clear that the recording will be bad if the amplifier sounds quiet at a volume of 3 or even 5. So thats when i spot the difference, amp always sounds weak when something wrong with electricity im checking it on the voltage stabilizer screen. Even in my friends house amp sounded differently but that can be due acoustics.

    Hmm I have an idea regarding your vintage tube amp problem. Power conditioning is key for maintaining tone consistency. Older apartments really don't like tube amps that much and investing in a power conditioner could possibly fix your problems. Also if your amps run below 120v then using a variac to decrease the wall voltage to match the amp could improve the sound and longevity of your amps. I hope this helps.

    Some advice on tuning: CS guitars has a really good video that shows how to properly tune a guitar. The TLDR is you want to tune the lower strings so that they’re just a little flat but are brought into tune when you pluck them, that way they don’t sound sharp.

    Normally I would say humidity and temperature, because if you keep the speakers in the other room, and you only solder them and put them in the cab occasionally, the paper cone of the speaker adjust to the room conditions.
    The fact the speakers sound good on Randall may be because solid state amps have a more predictable and "linear" output than tube amps.
    Buuuuuut. This is just a theory. I am more of a player than technician, so take it for what it is: a theory.
    Edit: just read about the power consistency in the comments. It is also a good theory IMHO. That would explain the solid state beeing awesome no matter what. You could try to put your amps through a Variac EVH style.
    I absolutely love your videos man, no matter the topic 😉!

If I remember in one of your older videos you had the same attenuator I did. I never used it again.

    Check for DC on all the signal leads with cloth insulation under and around the turret board on the Fenders. If its there clean the inside chassis surfaces with alcohol and soak the cloth insulation with alcohol too. Might need a couple-three times for the leads. Sounds like voodoo but it works. Cleans up decades of weird electronics ooze that for whatever reason induces stray dc current.
    And then all the rest: new power supply caps and resistors, bring all the bias circuit components back to spec, clean clean clean all the pots, clean the tube sockets, clean old tube pins. You prolly know all this. And yre right about sketchy tubes, even when you've got everything else where its supposed to be they can behave differently from day to day when theyre pooping out, especially dual triodes.

  • @Beizeiten78
    @Beizeiten78 Год назад

    Look at getting a Brown Box, you might be getting voltage fluctuations, which solid states are far less sensitive to such things. Old amps generally prefer less than standard wall output anyway, like Fenders like 117 volts.

  • @krauz111
    @krauz111 Год назад

    check the voltage from the wall, it should be 120, sometimes it can go up to 140 or down to 110 and that will directly affect the bias of tube amps. Buy a Variac to exaclty control the wall voltage and a furman power conditrioner after that to clean it up. Same thing happened in my house, made amps sounds horrible

    The speakers sound out of phase - which is unusual. Are you wiring them up with the correct polarity? Or is something causing them to change polarity, some kind of magnetic disturbance? Or you fried your output transformer with impedances too low. Running that quad reverb with one power tube causes the bias to be way-off and sends the incorrect load to the speakers and damages the amp. It ideally should have two in a push-pull configuration.

    I think I have an explanation (rather a parable) for your tube problem.
    Think of it like this. You’re riding your bike, it has a hole in its tube, yet you didn’t know it had a hole inside the tires tubing. The tire runs fine for a while, but then goes flat again. Refilling the air in the tire helps for a while, but it’ll eventually deflate, because of the unpatched hole or worn out tubing.
    With your tubes (the amp ones) being as old as they are, they have holes in the tire (metaphorically). Changing the speakers (the air in the tire) helps for a while because it’s a different electric current, it’s fresh. But they’ll go flat again. Changing the amp tubes is like changing the tire tubing in the bike.
    I only know a few things about electrical doohickeys and even less about tubes (the amp kind), but it’s the thought that counts I guess.
    Love your stuff btw, you can do some pretty cool shit
