I think Samson won because the Arnold has a different set of standards, there is more of a focus on aesthetics, look at Samson's physique it's similar to Cedric's (RIP) who was Arnold's favorite bodybuilder. The men's open Mr. Olympia focuses on sheer mass monsters like Nick, not on aesthetics like the judges do at the Arnold. So I believe it has more to do with the different standards at each competition, not necessarily just being at your best.

Clearly choosing esthetics over refrigerator-like mass has improved the overall quality of the lineups. I did not hear the term bubble-gut once. Nick's mass and conditioning is amazing but who would choose to have that physique over Andrew or Samson's crazy esthetic physiques ? Even Rami looks like a haphazardly filled hockey bag compared to them.
Uh, it's not a "who would you most like to look like" competition. Or at least it never has been in the last half century history of bodybuilding. Idk about you, but I'm just not interested in a beauty pageant. Rather, I want the guys with the best combination of relative mass and conditioning to be at the top. After those two most important categories, I'd say symmetry and balance are next, followed only then by overall aesthetics.

Samson looked so good. His height with his mass is incredible. He just outsized everyone with great proportions too. That height with those legs is nuts. If he continues to improve he will be unbeatable for years

I feel like even with the waist issue, if he grew his vastus lateralis a bit more and his gluteus medius his midsection/torso even thought it could use work wouldn’t be that much of an issue

Nick Walker has a uniquely strange build for a short guy, Derek is an inch or 2 shorter than Nicks, but Derek's build is far better, with longer legs and arms. It's not necessarily just because he's short, there are a lot of short guys in bodybuilding.

A lot of people don't understand that bodybuilding is a subjective sport. All the top placers were in shape and full, then it's down to personnal preference. Nick is a freak and was slightly more conditioned, but Samson is very complete, balanced and symetrical, and a very good poser. Nick deserved to win, and Samson ALSO deserved to win, the 2 can be true at the same time.

You are exactly right Greg. Simply stated, Samson was the better man for this Arnold Classic. Nick Trigili has a perfect understanding of the judging process. But he also can be stuck in his own point of view. The judging process hasn't changed since the days of Oscar State and Winston Roberts. The IFBB set standards for these contest, but it's exactly what Greg said. It's subjective and the judge's happened to see Samson as the winner. Exactly how Nick Walker placed second at the past Olympia. Nick Walker is a wonderful bodybuilder and seems to be a very nice person, but he doesn't have the same genetic shape as Samson or Andrew Jacked. That's what the judge's seemed to base their decisions on.

Samson and Andrew are both mindblowing. Nick Walkers structure just does not compare. And let's not forget, this was The Arnold Classic, and we all know what Arnold likes... Aesthetics. Sorry Nick and Nick but you you better get used to 2nd and 3rd place

I was able to see the night show in person. From the front alone, Andrew was the winner. From the side alone, tossup between Samson and Nick, though I liked Nick. From the back, Nick was the winner. Here's my poses and how I would have scored the top 3: FDB: Andrew, Nick, Samson. FLS: Andrew, Samson, Nick. SC: Samson, Nick, Andrew. ST: Nick, Samson, Andrew. RDB: Nick, Samson, Andrew. RLS: Nick, Samson, Andrew. AT: Andrew, Nick, Samson. MM: Nick, Samson, Andrew. Scores would have been: 18pts for Andrew (3rd) 17pts for Samson (2nd) 13pts for Nick (1st) Or switch the rear lat to favor Samson as that ones close and Nick still wins, but by 2 points this time. I can see the appeal of the streamlined bodybuilder but that's not what open is anymore. I think a classic division without weight caps would be great🤷♂️
Both Samson and Andrew have way better symmetry and size. Simply being the most peeled is not enough. Need the balance. Not hating on Nick though he's a beast.
By being beaten by a far superior shape and proportions and setting the standard for aesthetics rather than just muscle building simple as that Gregory

I've never watched anything body building or ha e any interest in it. But I've been watching these coach Greg's videos for two weeks. And lost 4 pounds without noticeable differences
That’s why Chris Bumstead has usually always been on point. He goes in with the mentality that he can lose and so he goes hard. I’ve seen a lot of these Pros that have placed high before and just think they’re going to be there again and not even try and get mad or shocked they fell places. (Not saying that happened here.)
They both have their pros and cons. I just don’t see how being 100 pounds overweight and constantly lifting super heavy awkward weights that result in injuries is being a winner. Also, you actually have to win the strongman right?

@@mjdean89 we are dying, your organs are getting wors over time. ther is no sport that heals, just sport that slows the process, but no sport that fixes everthing. running can be as bad if done on the highest provessional level... just like the most sports, you are loosing 10-20 years of your life if you are on the highest level. the drugs just make it worse and you can see a statistical diffrence in sports that have solid testing (or sports were ther is less advantage like in baseball ) vs. open sports or sports with no testing
It was pretty clear from the prejudging they had Samson in 1st. He was in the center right away, and again in the top-3 call out. Otherwise, it is pretentious of these commenters to opine based on images and video. Those RUclipsrs who couldn't move their rear over there, to see the competition in person, should just shut up.
My wife also picked Andrew Jacked. I couldn't decide between Walker and Dauda. To be honest, I picked Big Ramy over Jacked. *Edit* Walkers quads may not have been as good as Dauda's, but I thought he looked tighter in his glutes and hamstrings.
now that I see it samson really did deserve 1st place. andrew jacked is somewhat more aesthetic with the posing but dauda was phenomenal. the vacuum seems like it earns more points than no vacuum and dauda not only had a vacuum but he almost had better abdominal definition than the other competitors. the "almost" matters less because the rest of his poses were slightly better but the difference was so close that it really made no difference so either way the consumer is the real winner here
I think Samson did look great and improved from the Olympia, but still think Nick was a little better. Andrew Jack looked great too. But...I'm just a fan and not a judge. Congrats to Samson, it's a subjective preference more than a robbery. Good explanation.
Some people will never make it to the top in body building because of how much genetics play into effect, this might come out as a bit harsh and I have mad respect for nick walker but he looks like a muscular Lego mini figure with how his bone structure is set up and I think he should be proud with how far he has made it when up against guys who have the best of the best genetics and the best of the best physiques
This is the issue w/ such "competitions". Its not like other events where the criteria being judged on are objective things rather than almost completely subjective like "best physique". We have some subjective criteria issues in my old sport of saber fencing too. Its just one of the issues of certain types of competitions.
It looks like the second photo of Samson at 4:26 is out of focus... not very fair to say that Samson looked worse in the finals when the data is flawed.
“Shows are won from the back” because your back development is truly the testament of how good of a bodybuilder you are. Not how good of a body you’ve built, how good of a bodybuilder in your mind you are. The back is arguably the least visually observed body part, even with the invention of mirrors and photos, so a large amount of building comes from a deep mental and physical understanding of how to build the body. Bodybuilding. And typically, like with most industries, the person who understands the thing the most, coupled with the most experience, is the one who is one of “the best” of it. That is why is whoever has the best back usually is the better bodybuilder, not the other way around.
And I’m aware of bodybuilders with great backs but lagging other parts: they still are great bodybuilders, they just don’t train that lagging part. They aren’t not good at training it, they just don’t. But that is an entirely different conversation
Milos already said that the only thing Samson needs to and will improve is back which makes sense since other parts are already insane. So he needs to gain some muscle and not lose weight. He has a have a very good chance to win Olympia this year. Will be interesting to see how he compares to Hadi and Lunsford. This years will be the best Olympia in the long time if you look at the competitors that will be there since they are all amazing.
The Arnold rewards aesthetics and Olympia rewards size. I’m not sure but I would’ve given Samson 1st. Not because he’s a better body builder but his height. It’s just a genetics thing. See Bumstead vs Breon
I think the controversy is that most people thought the top 3 were almost interchangeable. But it's entirely possible that you'd get 5 judges who all preferred 1 guy, as it seems at least 2 of them thought Walker was 3rd. It is still a subjective sport. I don't think it's wild that Samson got the nod.
That’s why I would never compete in body building. Put in all that work and your livelihood comes down to whether the judges feel some type of way on comp day. No thanks
Bob Chic in his latest upload says there are more than 7 judges. He then answered a comment on how many judges there were, that at Mr O & Arnold's there are actually 11 judges.
First off that second place was a gift! Should have been awarded to the other genetic beast AJ! And I would even make a case for BR coming in 4th ahead of NW

This is not a popularity contest this is the pinnacle of bb one notch below the Mr.O Taking aesthetics muscularity proportion and overall flow they all come together for the final score. AJ may have been a little too lean but was more than enough to take down a bb with mismatched upper and lower with a very blocky “”for that lineup” physique! Go back to the 18 Mr.O when a smaller but super proportionate and shredded Shawn Roden took down the 7 time champ.
Samson just has the better size, nick had better condition but lacked fullness from the Olympia if he had the same fullness from the Olympia he wouldve beat samson
IMO i prefer juding by poses not by overall, juding by poses is way more objective and fair. Overall flow and just looking and deciding brings in too mutch subjectivity.

I was able to see the night show in person. From the front alone, Andrew was the winner. From the side alone, tossup between Samson and Nick, though I liked Nick. From the back, Nick was the winner. Here's my poses and how I would have scored the top 3:

Or switch the rear lat to favor Samson as that ones close and Nick still wins, but by 2 points this time. I can see the appeal of the streamlined bodybuilder but that's not what open is anymore. I think a classic division without weight caps would be great🤷♂️
Both Samson and Andrew have way better symmetry and size. Simply being the most peeled is not enough. Need the balance. Not hating on Nick though he's a beast.

I've never watched anything body building or ha e any interest in it. But I've been watching these coach Greg's videos for two weeks. And lost 4 pounds without noticeable differences
That’s why Chris Bumstead has usually always been on point. He goes in with the mentality that he can lose and so he goes hard. I’ve seen a lot of these Pros that have placed high before and just think they’re going to be there again and not even try and get mad or shocked they fell places. (Not saying that happened here.)

They both have their pros and cons. I just don’t see how being 100 pounds overweight and constantly lifting super heavy awkward weights that result in injuries is being a winner. Also, you actually have to win the strongman right?

@@mjdean89 we are dying, your organs are getting wors over time. ther is no sport that heals, just sport that slows the process, but no sport that fixes everthing. running can be as bad if done on the highest provessional level... just like the most sports, you are loosing 10-20 years of your life if you are on the highest level.
the drugs just make it worse and you can see a statistical diffrence in sports that have solid testing (or sports were ther is less advantage like in baseball ) vs. open sports or sports with no testing

It was pretty clear from the prejudging they had Samson in 1st. He was in the center right away, and again in the top-3 call out. Otherwise, it is pretentious of these commenters to opine based on images and video. Those RUclipsrs who couldn't move their rear over there, to see the competition in person, should just shut up.

My wife also picked Andrew Jacked. I couldn't decide between Walker and Dauda. To be honest, I picked Big Ramy over Jacked. *Edit* Walkers quads may not have been as good as Dauda's, but I thought he looked tighter in his glutes and hamstrings.
That's when you know it's a good show when it's hard to decide on a favorite.

now that I see it samson really did deserve 1st place. andrew jacked is somewhat more aesthetic with the posing but dauda was phenomenal. the vacuum seems like it earns more points than no vacuum and dauda not only had a vacuum but he almost had better abdominal definition than the other competitors. the "almost" matters less because the rest of his poses were slightly better but the difference was so close that it really made no difference so either way the consumer is the real winner here
I think Samson did look great and improved from the Olympia, but still think Nick was a little better. Andrew Jack looked great too. But...I'm just a fan and not a judge. Congrats to Samson, it's a subjective preference more than a robbery. Good explanation.

Some people will never make it to the top in body building because of how much genetics play into effect, this might come out as a bit harsh and I have mad respect for nick walker but he looks like a muscular Lego mini figure with how his bone structure is set up and I think he should be proud with how far he has made it when up against guys who have the best of the best genetics and the best of the best physiques

This is the issue w/ such "competitions". Its not like other events where the criteria being judged on are objective things rather than almost completely subjective like "best physique". We have some subjective criteria issues in my old sport of saber fencing too. Its just one of the issues of certain types of competitions.
It looks like the second photo of Samson at 4:26 is out of focus... not very fair to say that Samson looked worse in the finals when the data is flawed.
“Shows are won from the back” because your back development is truly the testament of how good of a bodybuilder you are. Not how good of a body you’ve built, how good of a bodybuilder in your mind you are. The back is arguably the least visually observed body part, even with the invention of mirrors and photos, so a large amount of building comes from a deep mental and physical understanding of how to build the body. Bodybuilding. And typically, like with most industries, the person who understands the thing the most, coupled with the most experience, is the one who is one of “the best” of it.
That is why is whoever has the best back usually is the better bodybuilder, not the other way around.
And I’m aware of bodybuilders with great backs but lagging other parts: they still are great bodybuilders, they just don’t train that lagging part. They aren’t not good at training it, they just don’t. But that is an entirely different conversation
Milos already said that the only thing Samson needs to and will improve is back which makes sense since other parts are already insane. So he needs to gain some muscle and not lose weight. He has a have a very good chance to win Olympia this year. Will be interesting to see how he compares to Hadi and Lunsford. This years will be the best Olympia in the long time if you look at the competitors that will be there since they are all amazing.

The Arnold rewards aesthetics and Olympia rewards size. I’m not sure but I would’ve given Samson 1st. Not because he’s a better body builder but his height. It’s just a genetics thing. See Bumstead vs Breon
I think the controversy is that most people thought the top 3 were almost interchangeable.
But it's entirely possible that you'd get 5 judges who all preferred 1 guy, as it seems at least 2 of them thought Walker was 3rd. It is still a subjective sport.
I don't think it's wild that Samson got the nod.

Taking aesthetics muscularity proportion and overall flow they all come together for the final score. AJ may have been a little too lean but was more than enough to take down a bb with mismatched upper and lower with a very blocky “”for that lineup” physique!
Go back to the 18 Mr.O when a smaller but super proportionate and shredded Shawn Roden took down the 7 time champ.

Samson just has the better size, nick had better condition but lacked fullness from the Olympia if he had the same fullness from the Olympia he wouldve beat samson
IMO i prefer juding by poses not by overall, juding by poses is way more objective and fair. Overall flow and just looking and deciding brings in too mutch subjectivity.
