Solid vid! Wish I could broadcast this 24/7 for the first few weeks of every year on my local water for folks with new boats.....a couple things I would also emphasize for anyone digging in the comments of this vid 1. Be careful how fast you slow down to pick up a fallen rider..if you are running a lot of weight (especially fat sacs + people) you can cause that surf or wake wave to ride up onto the sun-platform if you are not careful (also be sure nobody is standing while you slow down). Know your boat's legal capacity limits too. 2. Turning while towing a rider the 'right way 'is just as important as turning to pick-up a rider when they are down. Come back into your own wake (if it is safe), following the turn-around is key to keeping the water clean and allowing boats to run in smooth water in a similar pattern. 3. Do not wrap the rope around your hand while pulling yourself into the 'sweet' spot on the surf-wake...also try to use a thick surf rope for new folks learning. Dang I should just make a vid too...props to JB for another great vid! #BoatSafeShredLonger
If you’re worried about hitting people up for gas all the time then you probably shouldn’t be on in about like this. When you bring people on your boat they may or may not offer money but again if you’re that concerned buy a pontoon
Thank you so much for making this vid for new boaters, last time we went out we had to wait for a first time boater who didn’t know how to back up and it took like 30 minutes until he got out of the way probably more.
DUDEE the part you talk about talking about turning the opposite side for surfing is so important. I show people that and they are like woah that’s smooth
@@jboneill One generic tip for the boat ramp - you mentioned not shouting at your wife out the window of the car to avoid a divorce. Good tip, and hopefully some backing-up practice and preemptive rehearsal of the sequence of events can make it easy, but if you do need some communication, call your partner on your cell phones (speaker/handsfree). Talking quietly on the phone is less likely to cause a stressful, antagonistic response than if you're shouting, in public, to someone 50 ft away, over the noise of truck exhausts!
All that is just gospel. but the speed and the positioning of people in your boat especially when you don't have a wakeboarding boat is super important! great video!
Awesome you made the video, is needed but it's missing some important points in my opinion. which are 1. if you drive the boat you are responsible for the people on the boat, even injury, by that I mean coordinating picking the person out of the water and bringing them to saftey. 2. driver gets to choose the music unless asked, other people can play music but just ask the driver first 3. always driver in a straight line, curves suck, and when making a curve, jb pointed it out, make it a quick turn 4. be there before the time agreed, by 5-10min. being a little earlier is curtious, especially if there is a time limit on the water 5. wave to other boat riders, spot on jb 6. as a driver consider how you drive amongst other drivers, don't do uneccssary turns, stay closed to one side of the lake instead of through the middle 7. if you have to cover the boat at the end of a session, help the driver clean and cover the boat up 8. understand the hand signals for how to tell the driver to change the speed and when you are done with your session 9. if you are invited, ussually bringing another person was not part of the plan, chose wisely when asking to bring third parties, we don't have all day 10. if you are not the driver and are not going in the water next, helping prepare the next person is not a bad thing, you can set up the handle while the rider gets ready there are many small common sense things but these are the ones of the top of my head.
Great video. One thing I’d add: don’t be that guy that tries to shoot the gap between a boat that’s towing a rider and the shoreline. It’s sketchy, stressful for the driver, and often times completely unnecessary.
This is great, one other thing I can’t quite master is how to handle a huge wake from another boat that’s coming at you without burying your nose or bouncing over them. On a narrow lake this happens often. What’s the best way to drive thru these? Being horizontal works on small ones but what about huge ones?
GREAT and MUCH needed video JB, But what's with the hick accent? Glad you mentioned picking up rider on the right (starboard) side of the boat as you will always keep the fallen rider in sight for safety sake, also allows for easy communication between rider and driver.
remember to have your 'plugs' in before you launch your boat 1st launch w my Nautique & wondering why the bilge pump was going off & my feet were getting wet. 'Emergency' re-load onto the trailer - 'almost' divorced
I’d like to see one about etiquette toward other boaters and residents of said lake. Now that towboat wakes are huge there are a lot of wallys making a bad impression on the rest of the lake users. Running fully waited for no reason, getting too close to docks and shoreline, blasting terrible music in front of peoples houses for hours. We need people to be courteous and aware of how big and disruptive our wakes can be. Many lakes banning wake enhancing devices. If people were just a little more aware I think it would go a long way. It might not be as prevalent on lake Austin since towed water sports pretty much all own that lake but around my area a lot of people hate wake boats. We want people to like towed water sports, not hate them
Agree, we have a Centurion Ri and my 17 year son taught me to always keep the surf side to the middle of the lake. Great points on the boating etiquette. Could do a segment on launching, retrieval and guests helping clean up and covering. I have taught the kids friends and they do better then most adults.
JB does it again! 😉👍🏻 Airbuds a part of our family why wouldn’t you take him on the boat? I hope you and your family have a lovely Christmas 🎄🎁🍗🍻🥂 thanks for the content over the year mate. 👍🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻✌🏻😁
Driver holds a straight line when the rider is cutting to the wake for a trick & waits until they land & are riding away from the wake before initiating a needed turn of the boat. On the flip side, the rider has to pay attention to any turns and/or obstacles ahead so it doesn't put the driver/boat in a bad position. It's amazing how many times riders do this & it's so frustrating!
Fully loaded? He is the homie, but I’m not sure if I believe that if the boat is fully loaded. Although I think it’s possible with some weight in, it is just a million times easier to push the throttle down.
@@jboneill I understand that, I love Adam. He taught me how to wakeboard and is just a fun dude. I don't remember exactly but whatever margin of speed he was able to keep it at was very impressive. Im just going off of what he told me.
@@jboneill I really just hope that a couple years down the road I"ll be good enough to go out and ride with people like you and Adam, AND FYNN BULLOCK, love him, he was really the first person to teach me, him and Carlos Ruiz.
I live on a lake and my neighbor constantly whips skiiers into the cove so they will ski right up to the dock. When this happens the cove is slammed with rollers as you call them. Then they beat the shore. Oh well
How about when in the water dont drive a tube in the nice water and ruin it. Go to a quiet part if the lake/River to drive the tube, very annoying if ur a beginner trying to ride and theres rollers everywhere
Offers to help with gas are much appreciated, but graciously declined. If you can't pay for the gas for your boat, you probably can't afford a boat. But, then again, we INVITE guests to ski/ride when we go out. Food, drinks and help cleaning up are different matters.
Brandon - Tubing is the "redheaded stepchild" of tow sports. Should only be done when the water is too rough for anything else. Can be responsibly done, but far too many drunken fools think it necessary to spin donuts or carve figure 8's and "S" turns at 40 mph is the way to roll.
To sum it up: Don’t be Wally. Also, don’t drive directly behind riders on the same line. Should be obvious, but people will tail you even when you’ve got riders. Ding dongs. While you’re at it, always double up the turn.
Unless your rider is hurt or in immediate danger from another vessel, you NEVER, EVER "power turn". When the rider goes down, you throttle back to idle speed, make the the turn to pick him/her up at idle speed. Otherwise, you're tearing up the water unnecessarily and sending rollers down the length of the lake. People who regularly powerturn to get their riders are clueless kooks, and give responsible boat owners a bad name.
One more thing, if you get a brand new wake boat, plz don’t go to the smoothest water on the lake just to tube. It is very annoying for someone who wants to wakeboard.
@@jboneill lol no man it’s all in fun, I have a ski boat and jet skis. Just making fun of things I have heard from other boaters. They act like jet skis and wake boats ruin the lakes. Sorry, not all of us want to just cruise around on a pontoon at 10mph all day
@@jboneill I board, ski and surf....and I'm almost 70. What almost nobody seems to understand is that we want smooth water just as much, or more, as anyone. That's why, when conditions permit, we drive close to (unoccupied) shore to mitigate half the wake, don't ever "power turn" or drive in circles.
Additional etiquette:
1. Ask beforehand about bringing others
2. Show up on time
3. Mind your trash
