    Thank you so much! I came for the entertainment value, but now I know why the silicone on the *inside* of my screen has gone mouldy. I had added it myself because I thought the builder had forgotten to do it... 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ I live and thanks to you I learn!

    • @GosforthHandyman

      No worries! Yeah, generally no silicone on the inside but always try to check the instructions for your shower screen if possible. 👍

    • @robbristow

      Same for me although the silicone? sealing on the inside was done by the builder or previous owner. (most likely the former which is a worry!)

      @BreakBeatStu 2 года назад

      Ditto... did the exact same thing and added silicone inside all along the bottom of the shower tray 😅 Guess I now need to take the frame out, remove it all, put it back and silicone it correctly on the outside

    It is also a good discipline to wipe the shower dry after use especially if you live in a hard water area. By leaving the shower with water droplets on the surfaces to evaporate, the residue quickly makes marks. I will not have another tiled shower surround having opted for the coated boards last time, excellent and so easy to keep clean. Good video Andy, very clear and to the point. Thanks.

    I use to do maintenance work in the hotels in London and had to do plenty of masticing and the old boy who use to lay the mastic down and before tooling,use to spray with a little bit of washing up liquid in a spray bottle.
    So you get no chance of a thin film of mastic left on the
    tiles on the tiles and tray.

    Nice work! A glass-enclosed shower is practical if your water has a low mineral content. My well water contains iron and manganese, so my shower looked dirty from day one unless I took the time to clean if after every use. As I grew older and less steady, the door and panel got in the way of transferring myself from one grab bar to the other, so I had it all removed and I'm very happy with my shower curtain made from water repellant fabric. Many years from now (after you've installed grab bars to keep yourself upright) you may want to do the same. ;-)

    Hi Andy, as others have said, you make it look so easy. However, I'm surprised you didn't drill a clearance hole for the self tapping screws to ensure the extrusions come together properly. Tapping both extrusions can leave a gap, albeit rather small.

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  2 года назад +1

      Clearance holes aren't mentioned in the instructions and I generally follow them to the letter to avoid any warranty issues 👍. It's a valid point about a gap though, normally if this happens just back out the screw and re-tighten and the gap closes up.

    From a maintenance point of view, isn't a rubber hose easier to clean than a rubber hose covered in a metal coil with a hundred dirt trapping ribs? What is the obsession with EVERYTHING MUST BE CHROME, even if it's just pretending to be metal? 😁 Like the obsession with trying to completely hide every pipe, even to the extent of installing toilet cisterns inaccessably in the wall. Sometimes it doesn't seem very practical. I know from some of your other videos that you have a practical philosophy about pipe boxings and shower tray plinths Andy, so I'm not having a go here, just general observations. "Don't my chrome sockets and light switches look great?" No they ****ing don't, why would you ever want to make a feature out of your electric points? 🤣
