    Mike. I have one of these easels too. It is my second favorite. My absolute favorite tabletop easel is my Daler Rowney Artsphere. If you have never tried one, you really must. As a watercolor realist I find it to be an absolute must. Thank you for all you do, I'm kind of an outsider in the art world. I don't fit in and never have. I gave up art and became a "closet artist" to escape the ridicule of not doing things properly. Now I'm starting a channel for handicapped artist to show art IS for everybody. Thanks for being one of the mentors who open the door.

    I have that same table easel and I really love it😊😊😊 use it all the time! Would you believe I also have that larger one, too! I use it more when I want to tape my watercolor paper to it! And for drawing. I’ve had it a long time, my husband bought it for me when I asked him if he would build me a drafting table. Easiest for him! Ha!
    Love to watch you paint. Thank you for all your explanations, tips, and instructions! I feel that I can always rely on what you say as being the truth about something. Also, if you don’t know the answer, you say that you don’t know, but will find out!

    Steve, thanks for this great information. I went to my first in person watercolor class today and they had some little flimsy tripod table easels...not good. Thank you for the video Steve. I have the same style easel. I bought it years ago and love it. I do store my oils and oil brushes in the drawer. Keeps everything handy when I do want to work in oils. The slider sometimes comes loose so I put a velcro strip to hold it secure while traveling with it. Other than that it was well worth the money. Clever using door stops. I like that idea. Hugs!

    Hi, instead of buying a standing easel in the future and have the problems of space you are going to loose; I would recommend an electric standing table. My husband has one for working at home, very easy to use and put together. This way you can use any of the table easels whilst standing. Cheers Kaye

    Great video Steve! 😆 I have 2 of the Michael's artist loft table top box travel easels, very similar to your new one...I love them. I use one permanently on my counter for burning and the other one is for doing public demos, other media, or if I am working on a really long burning piece. Yours definitely seems sturdy. I have no complaints overall with mine. I do keep the lower holder extended down to below my counter, mainly to add additional stability. I would suggest based on my experience, cut a sheet of the foamy kitchen cabinet liner to place under the base. It will keep the easel from sliding back when you apply more pressure and undue marks from happening on your table. I've been using my easels for 6 years now and the liner definitely helps. I love your door stop angle method...I am going to have to borrow that idea! TFS 🤗

    Don't know how I missed this, but thank you for doing this review and showing your other easel solutions. I have been looking for a more solid table top solution, as many of them are flimsy. I have a drafting table as well, but then you can't lay anything else on it when it's tilted. So both the Renoir and the drawing board at the end will be invaluable additions to my studio :)

    I bought a Julian by blick travel easel which is essentially the same as your table easel, just with legs. I use it for both travel and desk work. for the desk I just set it up without folding out the legs and works quite nicely for both. Also a good floor easel is nice provided you have the room. I have both since I started with drawing with charcoal first.

    I looked at the same easel-pochade box combination for use as a travel easel. I'll add a quick-release tripod mount to the bottom so I can use it with my field tripod, and add little rubber feet feet for clearance when it's being used on a table surface. I have several portable drafting surfaces already for nearly-flat watercolors and washes, but I like having the option for a more vertical for en plein air sketching and oils...especially when traveling and only carrying one pochade box and one tackle-box for addl. supplies.
    Most French easels are too bulky for table-top use, and don't let you easily adjust the angle.

    I have that same adjustable drawing table top, but believe it or not, I often paint right on my LED light board. Especially if I'm painting something I use a photo for as a reference. I put the paper right over the print out of my photo. I'm not great at redrawing accurately and I find it helps a lot.

    I have the same Renoir easel but find that the screws on the side invariably loosen in use and the thing slowly collapses. This happens despite tightening them as much as possible. I do not lean on the board so it is not my weight that is doing this. Any ideas how to prevent this. Currently I don't use the easel because of this annoying factor. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    I asked my husband to make me a small board to take with on plein air excursions. It's a piece of plywood with a small "shelf" (just another piece of wood attached with 2 screws) to hold my waterecolor block. I'm thinking an old rolled towel will do the trick to angle it. Trying to stay at lightweight as possible. Haven't had a chance to use it yet, as the weather has been super nasty over here and Spring has not yet sprung. I'm really enjoying your vids!

      I know ---- right after watching this, I saw it (ha-ha)! I'm trying to keep the lugging around to a minimum and the gawkers away. I'm not that comfortable plein airing yet. Last one I went on was at a castle (a pretty famous one Burg Eltz); I was only going to sketch. Sat on my little camp chair (thanks Dad!) at the furthest possible spot --- still had people sneaking up on me. I'm making myself do this because you can't over come if you don't try.... and I want to conquer that "fear". I started painting after nearly a 40 year hiatus 2 years ago. I've got a lot of catching up to do. Glad I found a welcoming (and very helpful plein air group). Sad that the Army keeps breaking up our little family, but we get to paint in really awesome places. At least the ladies, who aren't chicken like me, do. Thanks again for all your helpful tips. I love your work.

    🤯Ohhh wow 😮!! I was just thinking of getting a French Easel/Pochade Box set up. I also was wondering about all of the other varieties of easels. Having just spent a huge amount on new brushes, scrubbers, multi-media toned papers (black, blue, grey/gray, & tan) & both Strathmore Series 500 paper & Hahnemuhle 100% Cotton paper, I have to wait until Autumn 🍂 before I can think about an easel. I am wondering though, can that easel be used for Plein Air mounted on a tripod? Fantastic idea with the door stop riser. Thanks for sharing this informative video.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 лет назад +1

      Pretty sturdy. I don't know exactly how much pressure you can exert, but if you tighten down the knobs enough its very stable. The base keeps it pretty stable.

    • @Lzmstudio
      @Lzmstudio 7 лет назад

      I was wondering if you press hard does it slide away from you on the table? That is what kids tend to do, and topple easels over! I've been using the Daler Rowney Art Sphere Easel for a few months. It is great for smaller pieces, or with a drawing board for bigger pieces, but doesn't go below the table height as this one does. It is super heavy duty in weight. Probably too big for your space, however. I've got a review going up on my channel soon... and bought it at Blick.com (bit.ly/2o9WGmi).

Another brand box easel made just like your Renoir holds the canvas at a slight angle--enough to be visible structurally and measurable with a digital i-phone level, and causes problems painting. Would like to hear that this one is level. Thanks for your feedback.

      Its level enough for me but I've never measured it with a level.

    I really like the easel but I'm curious if they have one with a solid back. That the kind I need.

      I've seen some with solid backs that were similar. Like this one but the lower shelf does not go below the table. amzn.to/2m8ISeF

    I need an easel that will fit 24" wide 16 " high and 2" thick painting. Where can I find one?

    I'm looking for an easel that can tip forward a bit, for pastel drawing, so the dust doesn't slide down the drawing. Can the top of the easel tip toward you?

      Great question! I just checked and yes it can tip forward. However in that position the bottom bracket will no longer drop below the table or base height. But if your work isn't too large that shouldn't be an issue.

    What a nice easel :) I recently bought an easel to "ease" my way into acrylics.
    I have some questions that maybe you could incorporate into a video or if you've already answered them please link me, but...
    Are you a professional artist as in terms of it being a major part of income? Do you do gallery shows, sell prints etc? I ask because you're mainly a watercolourist and I was wondering if you could take about how to break out into the art scene as a watercolour painter. Acrylic and Oil painters seem to get a lot of attention and because they don't necessarily have to frame their artwork, a customer can just buy and go. But with watercolours, they always have to be framed (sometimes matted) which becomes more work for the artist or a burden to the customer. Is there a customer niche for watercolour painters? We just don't seem to get a lot of attention (even in terms of well known classic painters it seems). I love watercolours, but I'm also very new. I would love to hear your insight on this because I really admire you.

      Actually I've been a graphic designer and illustrator for most of my career so I'm just now making that transition myself. I'm not starting with the show, and print sales avenue but teaching and workshops instead. I plan to work towards the show scene later. Right now just focusing on RUclips, and online workshops. Selling art and prints is a very difficult path no matter what medium you work in.

    can you do a video on painting watercolor exclusively on easels? most people are not used to watercolor painting with easels because the gravity drags water down etc

      I talk about it in various videos. Basically I paint flat or nearly flat if I'm doing very wet washes I don't want to run. I paint on an incline when I'm painting detail without too much water. Its easier on the neck.

    Genius hacks! Are these still your favorites? What are your thoughts on the drawing board/easel duos?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, still primarily using the smaller easel unless I have a large painting then the box easel. No really thoughts on board/easel duos. Whatever works and suits your taste. I've gone smaller over the years to maximize the flat surface area for my paint, water and etc. I only need enough room on my easel for the piece I'm working on.

      Thanks so much for your reply! I ended up buying a table easel like yours, but smaller. I'm very much enjoying your videos that I just discovered (I'm brand new at water coloring). You're an amazing artist! I stayed up until 3a.m. watching you watercolor; it's hypnotic :-)

    Hobby Lobby is killing locally owned art and hobby shops. I am not sure they need a free plug.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  4 года назад +1

      I don't "plug" them. People ask me where I get stuff so I tell them. Simple as that. Besides, I don't believe they kill small shops in competition for selling serious artists' supplies. They barely have any. Amazon is probably the biggest culprit for doing that. HL is very deficient in many quality fine artists-grade supplies. Most of their stuff is cheap, hobby level or student level at best. The one small shop we have locally that does cater to the more serious fine artist has been in business for over 50 years and going strong. I give them most of my business. All the local university art teachers send their students there. We also had an AC Moore and a Michaels. Michaels' art supplies are a joke, AC Moore too but they went out of business recently. Amazon most likely caused that.
