I hand augered most of life. I am old now and the clam auger plate has kept me ice fishing these last five years. They are great.

As you’ve heard in previous comments of mine, I grew up fishing on lakes in northern Wisconsin. Never been ice fishing but as a boy I always wanted to try it. I clicked on your video here because it immediately made me flash back to my only really cool experience related to ice fishing.
I went to highschool in the 70’s in Milwaukee. I was lucky enough to get the greatest wood shop teacher on the planet. Everyone called him Mr. Z. He had a long Polish name I don’t remember but I remember him as Mr. Z. We all probably still do.
Toward the end of the school semester, our final shop project was to build a house. Everything according to building code. Wooden studs 16 inches on center, a door with cripple studs over the header, a window frame with a double-hung window. A Shad roof with a chimney hole for a wood stove. Fiberglass insulation between the studs and rafters, plywood siding outside, finished drywall inside. The floor was plywood nailed to floor joists. The roof was covered in tar paper and asphalt shingles.
This house was small, only 10x10 feet square, but he taught us every step in building a house, no matter what size it was.
“This is how a proper house is built, boys. We’re not finished but you young men really impress me. You are skilled builders now and have a great future in carpentry should you choose it. For those of you who may be wondering why we built this house in the shop, I’m buying this house. What it really is, is an ice shanty for ice fishing. The most well built ice shanty in history I believe, so I thank you guys so much. Now we’re going to build the trap door in the floor and the skids so that I can tow it out on the ice with my truck.”
Man, Mr. Z was one cool dude! Once his ice shanty was finished, we opened the garage door of the shop and a forklift lifted it on his trailer. The school year was over.
Needless to say, we all got A+ for a grade on our report cards for wood shop. I later moved to California and Hawaii, a carpenter being my trade, built many real homes, and my love for building was sparked by Mr. Z.
Oh and I’ve never been ice fishing but man have ice augers changed since the hand ones or the gas powered ones that would lock up and break your ribs and send you flying.
Sorry for the long story but some of my fondest memories were of fishing as a boy in Wisconsin.

Another great share! Thanks man. I sure wish schools would go back to focusing on the trades. I’ve been a plumber for 20 years now and it’s one of the best choices I’ve ever made. I encourage lots of kids to go into a trade rather than wasting years and cash on a degree unless they know exactly what they want and it requires one.

I've got the clam plate to with a Ridgid drill with the strike master lite flute 8" I also put on the gear reduction on the clam plate it gives it so much more power and it doesn't slow it down much at all. Great setup.

I haven’t tried the geared one but I’ve been thinking about it.

@@calebwistad if u do keep the original one but use the gear reduction one for late ice when u really gotta power through like 18-20 or more inches of ice. It's only 4 screws to change the regular one to the gear reduction one.

Clam plate is the way to go. I tried a dcd999 with just a normal side handle and tweeked my forearm on my 2nd hole. Been hand drilling for 30 years and now with the clam, there's no going back.

Did you need a adapter to run the k drill bit I was going to do the same set up but with a strike master 8 inch and was wondering if it would work

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad  6 месяцев назад

Yes, I did need an adapter for the K-drill. K-drill sells them on their website.

Just think how good this would be with a DeWalt powering it!…

Haha! There are fans of both. I happen to be a Milwaukee fan only because they make so many tools specifically for my trade (I’m a plumber) but DeWalt is a great company too.
