Finally! An integrated amp that has native Chromecast support that doesn't cost thousands of dollars.
Randy,
Thank you for your video and the encouraging things to hear about Play-Fi on this device. I have been rooting for Play-Fi for years (despite its issues) and it has slowly improved. I own six of the Klipsch Gate units and they are still going strong.
Great review Randy, HDMI and a good remote that is quite an upgrade. I don't know what to think about play-fi, it was bad for so long it is hard to get my head around the change. Thanks
Love your review Texan. Even watch when I'm not interested in the product being reviewed which is a testament to how enjoyable your channel is...request you to do a segment about how we can use 2 good floorstanders, a good subwoofer and a set of home theatre surrounds to deliver great home theatre plus hifi 2.1 stereo sound using one set of power amps, a HT receiver, a great DAC and sources for music and movies...I'd like to use the same two floorstanders for both home theatre and music
This may be the perfect replacement for my old Denon receiver (right channel starting to go). The HDMI Arc and streaming are exactly what I'm looking for for my TV. Thanks Randy!
Could never give up a center channel when it comes to tv and movies. So important to have your dialogue on that center channel imo
That new soundbase with Airplay 2 is really tempting.
Hey Randy, it's Curt Jurgens. Watched TCM when it first launched. Only complaint is they never aired as many Studio titles as they professed access to.
Good stuff as usual Randy!
Once all the reviews start flowing in, I‘d be surprised if they dont raise the price. It checks a lot of boxes at a great price. Looking forward to getting one of these.
Another great video Randy. I use the original as a power amp in my bedroom and love it's size, sound and power. Got it pared with an Echo Dot (Stream/pre) going into an Emotiva S8 sub sending >80Hz to the Soundbase which drives a pair of Emotiva B1+ bookshelf speakers. One question...Did SVS get rid of the internal lights? Mine lit up the bedroom ceiling like Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I had to open it up and cover every LED with a small piece of electrical tape. Now I can fall asleep and wake up without the fear of a plane landing on my bed. I also think SVS missed by not having a variable high pass X-over when using the sub out. Due to its size, Soundbase users are likely to use it with smaller speakers.
Good to hear your 'reassurances' regarding Play-Fi, but I am totally unfamiliar with it, and I do a great deal of streaming and try to stay abreast of worthwhile audio products. But, I remain very skeptical of Play-Fi. And part of my concern is whether Play-Fi will be a stable platform going forward, and even whether it will remain a viable business. It certainly doesn't seem to be a major player currently. Quite surprised SVS would contract with them for their product interfacing.
PlayFi is still garbage, and I still couldn’t get it to work reliably with the new Prime Wireless Pro speakers.
I really agree with you please increase the effort of distributing your products especially in our Tanzanian markets 🇹🇿
I'm not surprised this sounds good. I got a set of the SVS wireless prime pro speakers with similar internal electronics (class D amps (4), wifi streaming, same remote LOL- etc) and they are a remarkable system- my god they are so good. and yes, play-fi works pretty seamlessly and, of course - the files are fed straight from wifi as opposed to being cast via bluetooth by the phone you sat on last week.
I wonder how this stacks up against the Bluesound powernode..🤔
Tone controls are a must have.
My pre amp for my turn table has tone controls and I will be using Spotify to stream which has a adjustable eq. So should I worry about the lack of tone controls? I will be using it for my tv but I’m not really a home theater person just Netflix etc..
i dont comment hardly but if anybody knows you the coffee cup is the Metallica Black / and i would like to thank you i bought my first D.A.C. Schiit Modi 3E tonight thanks for the advice i have been a subscriber for 2 or 3 years i remembered. you did a video on top 15 or so D.A.C.'S so i went through your videos and got what sounded best to start with
I got rid of the original over play-fi. I was hoping the pro version would be better, can't wait to get one now.
Most people have a universal or a multi-device remote. These manufacturers just need to add "learning" capability rather than spending more money on yet another remote. But +1 on SVS to do the upgrade. The old Soundbase was hard to use without a remote.
Sith Audio Relic Remotes - with that vintage look from day 1
This one feels a little clickbaity and from a price perspective, you forgot to mention the Bluesound Powernode Edge, which gives you everything (including HDMI and Sub management) the Sonudbase 2 does but for $649. It does all of that while still providing what is in my opinion and apparently yours, a superior app experience, which to most people streaming is a high priority when deciding on what streamer/amp combo to buy.
I can't speak to the overall sound quality, tone, etc of either so perhaps the Soundbase is indeed a better choice for some people depending on their listening preferences, but this feels like an oversight in an effort to hype the new Soundbase.
After a lot of issues with Play Fi over the years and as recently as 2021, it's difficult for me to move away from Bluesound's interface, which is practically flawless. I do love me some SVS though and I hope that this product gains more momentum than V1.
SVS has a remote, more power, and actual rca’s. I’d like to see a shootout with these two though.
@@timtroxell4857 All true and I agree on the shootout!
The Edge is like half the power of the new Soundbase. A better comparison would be with the Powernode.
@@JeffHeon I think you're missing the point of my comment.
NAD used to be the bargain make. Not anymore, they are priced way out in the stratosphere. Sold NAD as a dealer, I am glad SVS is keeping this sensible.
Still wouldn't pay $700 for it. I rather spend that on a used McIntosh tube amp.
Were do you get a Mac for 700? I take two!
@@marcbrummel8566 not for 700, but found an affordable MC2000 when i was at misawa airbase. Stores with jbl 4350 and 4355 stacked to the ceiling.
Lets keep this real. I was a McIntosh dealer for over 10 years, and the affordable McIntosh is gone. If you were talking getting through the PX or AFES in the day, sure it was attainable. Not now. I am a huge fan of McIntosh, but I like to do other things too. The SVS is not going against MAC or NAD per se. Even though the high end NAD will very nicely. Sold NAD too. Lots of NAD. Perspective and customer expectations and price here have to be kept in line here. Who is this SVS for and why.
@@xray111xxx for audio equipment reviewers and sponsors. In a few months, the new svs killer and a few months after that, a new version by topping that is designed for same clean sounding solid state. These things just chase numbers and are easily forgettable and they come and go, nobody will remember this a few months from now.
I feel it's a great value. Two questions though. Back of unit says hdmi arc...not earc. Yet their spec page says both. Is it both? Or just arc? Lastly, they mention 150 watts into a 4ohm load....what is the wattage rating into a 8ohm load?
Big fan of your channel.Always feel welcome here with your now traditionnal :GRAB A CUP OF COFFEE intro!Seems like this SVS is a good product but with a long (too long?) list of shortcomings though.1(no usb input?) 2(no aptxHD support?) 3(no MQA support?) 4(no tone controls?) 5(no bass management?).Sorry for my poor english
I have a Yamaha aventage home theater receiver it streams music fine
Amozon straight thru the receiver Apple Music thru my Apple TV and hdmi connection. Sounds great
Greenish/orange patina over time would be 👌🏼
Thanks Randy.I really like your reviews and would like your advice. I'm looking for a device/ service that can instantly stream any songs from where I'm sitting.I use a Yamaha 2085 AVR. I've loved music since the '60s( mom asked me once to go a block away to see if the music could be heard! Scott amplifier, JBL speakers and Girard turntable. Now I listen to Martin Logan 60XT's that were Best Buy demos which certainly can sing loudly and clearly!
Seems like it is an excellent value!
Its the mug. I am sold!
HDMI arc adapteri cost about 15 bucks and can be attached to any RCA input.
Hard disagree Randy- that USB is for service only, and that’s a huge miss. On the NAD and Bluesound devices, I can attach a USB drive filled with my FLAC library and have that in addition to streaming services, etc.
Bummer 😕
Grabbing my cup of coffee!
Great video, as always! Does anyone know how I find out when the live streams are going to happen?
Bell notification?
A no brainer to recommend to friends (even the old version).
Later add some Power amp if you like some more (or better) power.
Would be nice if you could switch the Line out to pre out (for to use it only as streamer)
Is DTS Playfi now improved for all
gear? Should i have a look on my Quad Vena 2 play (the dusk collector) if i can use it now!?!!
Thanks for the review.
Hi Randy. Tks for your review. Would you use it with the Magnepan LRS+ ?
Dangit, now I want bronze remotes.
They would be super cool
Looking into these instead of a Soundbar because I love my Music as well. How is the Audio Video Delay though the Bluetooth? Thanks so much guys.
Emotiva BasX TA1 $599 with USB is a better choice than HDMI ARC for me. I don't like static Spotify on my OLED TV burning in my screen. Hooking this to your TV for 2CH is not my bag. Do the SVS sound better than TA1?
No streamer
I have the Elac UniFi UB52's, which would you recommend; Bluesound Powernode Edge or this SVS Prime Wireless Pro Soundbase? Main uses will be for home theater and listening to music through Spotify. Thanks! Love the videos!
May I ask you what amp you end with? Svs or Bluesound? And how is it with the elacs?
Man, I wish I’d have known about this receiver before I built my new system 3-4 months ago. I went with the Cambridge AXR100, because I needed a quality amp with a dedicated sub out and wanted a full bitrate internal DAC. I really wanted something with HDMI Earc for volume control and seamless integration with my HT since my listening system is the same. I love my AXR100 but I feel like for a 100$ bucks more, adding a streamer, and volume control thru my TV remote would have been a no brainer.
You happy with the axr100d? Looking at that amp but also the svs and powernode and really unsure what to get
@@LiquifiedLK It sounds amazing, And I have no way of knowing whether the SVS would sound as good, but I do know that getting an having eArc and a Streamer built in would make up the difference in dollar value without question.
I wonder how it pairs with current demanding speakers like Maagies?
How does the built in dac compare with Topping, Bitfrost. etc.?
Could it have a use case like; 1. pre-out -> hifi power amp -> your best hifi speakers. 2. speaker-out -> some nice passive subwoofer(s) ? (So hifi stereo with subwoofing, but without using the official subwoofer pre-out, instead making use of the 2x300 watts class D.)
Yes something that makes sense .hope you have a great day my friends
What speaker recommendation would one suggest for this amp. along with a sub.
Anyone know how the SQ compares to say, other smaller integrated amps such as a Rega Brio, Rotel or Arcam, etc?
Hej Randy.
Does it sound better if I use Sith Audio batteries in the remote???
Really enjoy your reviews very informative. Would the svs pro drive a pair of Jamo Concert C93ll? I ordered a set after watching your review on them the other day. I want to use them in replace of a soundbar in a bedroom.
This amp might work well if the frequency works curve works like the previous model which dropped off a bit -.5 to -1% from line level; could help to tame the brightness of the C93II if you experienced that.
So theoretically this could be used for an outdoor speaker system with like the Bose 251 series, correct?
Randy,How does it compare to the yamaha s801? Sound wise
How does Bluetooth AptX sound on this receiver I have an older Harmon kardon avr330 receiver is this svs worth getting for a Bluetooth streaming solution or should I keep my old receiver and get a ifi zen one signature dac ? Or should I get the
aune x1s gt bt headphone amplifier
I am currently playing all music at my house from RUclips Music to a Chromecast Audio to an AV receiver, then a speaker selector. Mostly using 4 speakers on patio(2 volume controls) then 2 in kitchen. Would this be a good replacement for the CCA and AV receiver?
Wow. Suddenly my audiolab seemed expensive. 😅😅😅 That's great. Companies are competing to give us value.
So the power node edge has more features and is even cheaper?
If you already have your favorite speakers, it seems like a great entertainment center....uh, center. I bet if you don't have the speakers, SVS will point you to the powered speakers instead. I know at AXPONA they played those and they are bass monsters, though the room was not great (it was a hotel room after all).
I have the old SB, and it drove my two Ultra bookshelf and pair of SB3000 subs just fine, sounded better than my Denon X4400H AVR.
Haven't been able to watch yet. No video out on that HDMI? I like the album art/lyrics on the TV.
No digital out if you want to use a better/different dac though.
randy ,❤thanks for your review
There is an upgrade for Play-Fi to Play-Fi HD. Have you ever tried it? I think it's only relevant to streaming from a computer.
There’s a few of these two channel mini avr things now and they all have some drawbacks, seems odd to not offer even basic eq here, especially when it’s designed to be used with a tv.
The Sonos amp and Powernode (and now edge) looks compelling and the edge looks to be decent value.
On the other hand you can buy a full blown AVR for not so much more, with all the different eq and room correction features you might want plus they can do all the virtual surround/atmos stuff
I guess if some wants a small form factor for 2 channel, a standard AVR is out. I like these small amps, after years of large and heavy.
@@nc3419 yep, you could replicate it with 2 or 3 small units, probably for less but you lose the convenience then.
Seems like something Yamaha should be able to do.
@@krazyolie Having software built in would be a great option with access either on board, or via computer or smartphone. All in one is appealing but so many enticing standalone products too. So if one craps out or you find a better dac, etc, replacement is easier though perhaps more costly. Modular upgrade could be an option too especially if the pre/amp section performs very well. That way modules for dac, streamer could be upgraded over a longer period of time.
Companies can do it but don't want to take away from their sales of upgraded products, I guess. With SVS, just offer one outstanding product that could be upgraded, giving it more longevity. Unless they don't expect the amp section to last over the long term?
Is SUB OUT a pre-out? I believe original was fixed at 90hz.
I have 1 question tho pls , For whom the bell tolls ?
Have you tested the Sonos Amp? Curious how it compares. I know people hate Sonos, but their amp is quite good and their app is significantly better than most.
Tried it and picked the Bluesound Powernode, not looking back
The Sonos amp is spectacular
Does anyone know how this compares to Emotiva TA1 as far as sound and sound quality?
Highly likely this unit is either use the ICE150 or a Pascal module
HELLO,RANDY,DOES PLUGGING IN A CABLE TO SUB OUT JACK ENGAGE AN ADJUSTABLE CROSSOVER TO MOVE DEEP BASS TO YOUR SUB?
According to other reviews/info I looked up, yes. I think it was maybe 80 hz high pass.
Please do a video setting up a 4.1 channel system with both soundbases you own.
How many NAD amps have you reviewed? I've heard some of their stuff and been blown away. I remember you reviewing that little stand up guy but don't recall a significant amount of NAD products being covered here.
He’s reviewed the C 338 before
NAD C 338, D 3045, Bluesound Node and Node 2i. I am not sure if he has formally reviewed the powernode or not
The mug, is it artwork from the Black Album cassette liner notes foldout?
Also, just snagged a minty nice couple year old Teac AI-301 DA off eBay for $200! I've been on the lookout for a small form factor integrated with RCA and optical inputs and the Teacs were always way over my budget so I had to jump on this one.
hello,RANDY,WHY DOSENT SOUNDBASE PRO HAVE A HIGH PASS FILTER FROM THE SUB OUT JACK?
Two way Bluetooth for wireless headphones?
I love when things crush and kick NADs...
How the hell does this thing not have dual independent sub outs. They are a subwoofer company. Don't they wanna sell more subs. Come on
Did you not pay attention to what the guy said? It’s for folks who don’t want the entire home theater experience. Calm your nipples down. 🤦🏻♂️
Have they said when this will be available?
Is the stage more 2D or more towards 3D? Don't expect a tube stage but flat 2-D is completely maddening.
Wow, this is exactly what I wished the NAD 3045 was. Great review Randy.
I wonder how that dac compares to one in Bluesound Node N130
Svs saund base pro vs Yamaha 801 which is better?
Hi there , so if i want surround sound this is not , also can i connect a EQ ? THANK YOU
“My Name Is Nobody”. Best spaghetti western ever!
I have a SVS SB3000 sub and love it to death. I like the Idea of the Soundbase system, but I already have 2 Echo Studios and matching sub so the Soundbase would be a waste of money for me even though I know the SVS is far superior than the Studios.
This or the new Bose Music Amplifier (stupid name, I know)? I'm curious how the sound compares
Reandy, can you verify that the line out is actually variable level. It's fixed level on my original Soundbase
Question: when streaming Airplay 2 to this SVS box o' magic, can you control the volume via the native Apple Music app? or do you have to control the volume via the SVS remote or on-device knob? i know that sounds like a stupid question, but i've had a couple setups that didn't allow for Airplay volume control - so before i plop down $700, i want to be sure it solves for this issue.
bueller, bueller, anyone, bueller
I can’t say yet for sure as I just got it, but I tried with Spotify and the app volume changed when I changed it in Spotify. I’ll find out and post if I remember to do so. I think it worked by changing volume with the phone buttons.
Do you need Wi-Fi to use airplay or chromecast? Or can you connect and play cromecast or airplay without Wi-Fi?
Have to have WiFi
Wonder why the specs are not clear?
hi Randy, i noticed the USB says something like 'service' does this mean there's no USB digital input for connection to PCs/laptops and the like?
Yeah. Not a usb input unfortunate
@@cheapaudioman Thanks for the confirmation. you rock!!!
Excuse my novice here but why would this be better than streaming QBuzz hi res from my iPhone to my onkyo 797?
Fan of the show, will this Amp Dr., Sennheiser’s HD 6XX OK? Or are these specifically just made for bookshelf speakers?
I almost have to wonder if this is the same device as the SVS Prime Wireless Pro Powered Speaker System without the speakers...
No, this soundbase has a way more powerful amp, 150 watts/ channel (2 channel = 300 watt) at 4 ohms
No high pass filter equals a hard pass for me. Maybe check out the Powernode Edge?
Interesting product Randy, BUT.. is there something with a similar or same feature set and 50-75w /ch class D amplifier that’s half the price or less ?😉edit: oh, and yes, bass and treble controls please..
I doubt you find an all in one solution cheaper but a SMSL DA-9, WiiM Mini, Geshelli J2 would be cheaper and I’m guessing sound better.
Bluesound Powernode Edge is $649 and has the features you are looking for.
is the remote control RF or IR?
I can't believe with that much processing they couldn't implement a proper crossover (high/low pass) when a sub-woofer is connected.
I agree, but "experts" who ought to know, such as Paul McGowan at PS Audio says that your main L & R speakers should play full range and subs ought to augment (not replace) their bass responses. Yeah, yeah, I know that flies in the face of all the advice we've been given over the years to high pass the L& R and low pass the sub, such that the main speakers are not trying to reproduce low end frequencies. His argument is that if designed properly with good crossovers, they shouldn't be trying to reproduce frequencies they can't.
I've not tried it yet at home. I still have my Denon AVR set up to high pass the mains around 60 Hz, but it does make me think of trying it Paul's way over the Christmas holidays.
@@rosswarren436 That is why I don't blindly follow Paul McGowan's advice. I do what sounds best to me. And letting the Subs make the Bass, sounds best to me. I have watched enough of his videos to know, that he doesn't care for Subs. He also doesn't like horn drivers. And that's fine, he has a philosophy, and a following of rich people who buy his products. I will never be able to afford his products. I am completely satisfied on a much smaller budget.
@@richarddoberstein8308 I can see the technical side of it being better to play the mains full range. The crossovers (if designed correctly) should roll off the bass going to the woofers before they can bottom out. Then a sub would be augmenting them, not replacing them.
Conversely, for most people with modest power receivers or amps, off-loading that work to a sub seems like it would be beneficial. Bass can account for much of the power requirements going to the mains, (just inspect any audio file in Audacity and see how much is devoted to that) so letting the amp in a powered sub handle that should let the mains play louder and easier with more perceived dynamic range.
I'll experiment with it over Christmas holidays and see which way I like best.
@@richarddoberstein8308 maybe. If that is what you want to do. But you will also need to level match the volumes, and best to try the sub in various positions depending on modes in your room.
I'm not arguing, just noting that both approaches have some acoustic merit depending on your system. it won't be a "one size fits all".
Hmmm. This or a second hand Peachtree and a wiim?
Unfortunately the sub out doesn't have a crossover cut off. Svs is a sub company they should have at least added that to make it a little bit more streamlined
Is it just me or do the Play Fi screen shots look an awful lot like the Volumio interface? If DTS went to Volumio as a base for its service I’d be stoked.
interesting to compare it with Nuprime Omnia
Guess I'm old to. I'm looking for something to stream audio and video for Bluetooth earbuds or headphones. So I'm not driving my neighbor crazy. Can this do it
