Thanks for the memory here. I was in the 3rd and 4th grade in the mid- 60s when my dad was station here. We lived in Jefferson village across the street from the chapel. I enjoyed the pictures, it brought back many memories of friends, holidays, and snow. We left in May 1966, and returned to Mainz Germany in 1969.
CFK My first impression of life in Germany back in 2004. I will never forget my state of awe when I first arrived to the transient Barracks along the MP. It is just as it happened yesterday, I can legitimately say my 8 years in Germany have been the best in my life. I Miss it all!
Was stationed there 2 in the 90’s I luvd it so much I kept extending until I had to re-enlist I am who I am today because of all the years I stayed it was so central to everything history wise that made us who we are as America’s art architecture et al 😁 I am blessed and a better person for this
Darmstadt was my last duty station. The Community was great. We were there from "92-95." My wife & I went back in 2005, still barely open. We spent a lot of time for lunch at the food court with the kids. There was a Burger King in 2005. I miss being stationed in Germany.
First of all, thank you Alex. My unit in Darmstadt wasn't on CFK, it was on Kelly Barracks, but I spent a great deal of time on CFK. I enjoy watching these vids and looking at the pictures for the memories they evoke. That said, they also bring a tear to my eye, not so much because the kasernes are closed, but because they are falling down. The buildings are a mess, Grass is growing out of control, as well as trees. We took care of our home, why can't somebody take care of it now that we don't live there? It cuts like a knife to see this. It's really not even the condition of the place. It's more the attitude that it shows - nobody cares anymore. Sad, really sad. :(
Stationed there in 76-77 and again in 79-82.......now wish I had stayed another tour instead of Ft Hood Tx........Katiebuaw was right...you said it perfectly....one of the best times of my life... hindsight is 20-20...
