@gewloom sre I found right now that he is gone. I am truly sorry. I am happy that he is with his god and all the angels in heaven rejoice having him there but it is very sad that a man of god is no longer with us. He was like a father to me. Even I am Muslim. I loved him more than most religious people in my religion, because I found him truthful, honest and most of man of god. May god of Abraham bless his soul and put him in the highest rank of heaven. Good bye my beloved father .

I had a very similar experience. I am a sober alcoholic. At a seder, as I sipped the grape juice, I realized that I had been taken out of bondage by a strong hand, just as the story goes. Hit me like a splash of cold water...

I respect the Rabbi and his insights. But I feel a distinction must be drawn between internal and external oppression. Addiction is not slavery. Slavery is the theft of self by an external power. Addiction is the self alone, it is total subjugation of the self to itself. In truth, addiction and slavery are totally opposite.
We must respect slavery- that is, the experience and suffering of the slave. It is an ancient phenomenon, and still active in the world today. We must not cheapen that word. We can not use it as a metaphor, and only the shittiest person would compare themselves to a slave if they were never a slave. Respect the suffering of your ancestors and be grateful you didn't share it. Be glad that it is a concept you do not understand or relate to. It is the moment of silence for the victims of the somme- we do not share their pain, but we remember it, and try to prevent it happening again.

Echo Tango I respectfully disagree. As a clean addict, I can say that what I experienced was abject slavery.

The greatest slave is a one who is slave to "SIN". SIN seperates us from God. That is why Lord Jesus Christ came in to the world, the angel Gabriel said to Mary, you shall call your son JESUS for he shall save the people from their sin by the power of the Holy Spirit.
