No, not scraps each piece had to be carefully chosen and precisely cut. Various species of wood were used and the artisans had to make sure they would work well together and not expand and contract at different rates.
MANY years ago when I was 18, I worked for a floor layer and helped install a floor similar to the second to last floor in your video. All the pieces were precision cut and numbered by some custom hardwood supplier and all we had to do was build the puzzle. It was 9 foot diameter Sun. There was also other contractors working in this very expensive home. It took several days to piece it together. Owner called us back, there was a 6 foot arch gouged into the floor. The other contractors were cutting framing lumber on the new floor with a circular saw, blade guard stuck back and when he put it on the floor blade still spinning it skipped right across the Sun. 35 000$ just for the hardwood. Other contractors packed up and ran. Owner then paid us to sand and refinish a brand new floor. We had to remove almost a 1/4 inch/6mm. Good thing it was 3/4inch thick boards. The owner was way more chill about it than I would have been.
We laid a prefinished floor once, there was sawdust all over the floor so it was slick. Some new kid took off running across the floor and slid on his feet risky business style and had a staple in the bottom of his shoe. That wasnt nearly as bad as what happened to yall but he got fired.
People don’t realize how extremely expensive these floors - that they were about to rip up - would be to install today! Great work! These floors look majestic!!
I'm in love with ALL the herringbone floors. I never see those here in the States. So beautiful. I especially liked the pine herringbone and the first one even though I don't usually like "busy". That first herringbone floor was STUNNING!

I live in the U.S.A. Our house is about 102 years old. We have wood floors throughout. When we bought the home 20 years ago, the first thing we did was replace all the windows. 32 windows, Yikes! Next, we pulled up all of the carpeting, and sanded the wax and wear off of the maple floors. They had some scratches, some burn marks, and we had to remove about 100 screws from the floor. (We were told the screws were to decrease the squeaky floors, LOL!) Then we carefully blended a wood look epoxy to fill in the holes, sanded and refinished, they look great!
When I was doing remodels we had a subcontractor who was fantastic with revitalizing and installing new wood floors. Was always entertaining to see the before and after. There were a couple of jobs where the owner was talked out of ripping out some scuffed up wood floors that were glad they didn't. There's nothing like a good high quality wood floor

My artist uncle bought an old barn in the '80s. He and his friend the contractor converted it in to a beautiful home. They kept whatever of the old wood they could. (I think mostly hickory?) They even kept the built-in ladders that had led to the loft. They became sort of room dividers. What they couldn't save of the floors they replaced with oak.

Gorgeous! One of the favorite parts of my old house are my wood floors!! I need to get a repair person out since they’re starting to be some cracks in between the pieces.
I see a lot of that first floor here in Chicago. The gray area in the middle is from Linoleum covering it for many decades. I once removed a vinyl tile floor and it's underlayment, to find a full sheet (about 8' x 10' as I recall) of vintage Linoleum, preserved underneath since the 1950s. Sadly, the Linoleum was badly damaged from a hundred or so underlayment nails driven through it. The Breakfast at The Ritz floor definitely looks like mahogany. I'm holding an oil finished piece right now. Color and grain is identical.
Beautiful floors. Great job in restoration them. Real wood can last centuries. The cork was new for me but cool. A wooden floor with a nice carpet on is the way to go, and use of indoor slippers and not shoes worn outside :-). The Colombian Pine Herring Wood tile floor at 6:47 became spectacular after but at 7:12 what an unbelievable floor, and the room!! It should not even have a furniture on it, people should just bring their mat and their essential oil japanese burner or what is called and sit there and meditate, do yoga, just enjoy life on it.
My old house had beautiful narrow board oak floors under gross looking mastic and carpet glue and two layers of filthy old carpet and their degrading pads. The mastic remover was a beast and I had to start sanding with a coarse grit and work my way finer. In the end I got beautiful wood floors, and they still look good even though they’ve taken a beating for the last 5 years with a family and two large dogs in the house. Unfortunately my upstairs rooms had only the boards of the subfloor so I had to install flooring in those rooms.

Layed and sanded floors for over 20 yrs. It was so satisfying watching the transformation. Old floors naturally end up darker than a new install. And depending on wood type. My favorites were old heart pine floors. The ones I hated most were any with wax on them 🤣

Reminds me of my Uncle’s house in San Diego. Someone carpeted over these awesome hardwood floors. We sanded and refinished the floors. This was over 10 years ago. The floor sander is like magic.
Gonna have to suggest this to my folks. Lots of nasty stains from small dogs over the years, no matter how clean it is it's still stained. Sanding it may be just the thing to make it new again.
That "ornate" floor was amazing. A lot of math went into that, and the craftsman had to cut so many angled cuts, perfectly. I wonder if it was made before or after the advent of table saws. Otherwise, making all of those cuts by hand would be a nightmare, and a testament to the craftsman.
I love refinishing hardwood floors over sanding new floors, any day, I've been in the hardwood floor business for over 30 years I've refinished everything from homes to bowling alleys basketball courts to dance floors
My highschool main hall in New Zealand had indoor basketball, netball etc, and the floor was beautiful polished parquet woods of different species.. I remember admiring the artistry and workmanship, and it was well maintained I never saw any damage.
We recently bought a 50s house. We had the carpet ripped up to redo the flooring and it had super pretty hardwood floors under. Sadly my husband dislikes brown floors and wanted grey. So we just had the floorers keep the hardwood protected and put out flooring over it. That way whoever gets out house next has a choice between our grey vinyl floors or the natural hardwood
You are correct that one floor was mahogany I refinished a mahogany floor about 3 months ago in a mansion and it looked just like the one in this video ABSOLUTELY AMAZING looking wood
My primary school and subsequently the church I went to both had herringbone floors - they needed some work doing to them! Love these kinds of videos and wish I had wooden floors in my house!
So this video popped up in my feed. So of course I fell into the deep hole of RUclips. I love wood working and this is amazing results. Thanks for sharing
I noticed a lot of the rooms these floors are in don't have finished walls. Is it wise to have the floor refinished before repainting or wallpapering? I'd be so paranoid trying to redo the walls if my floor looked that good.
The floors look stunning. Sad to think how many get torn out that could have not only been saved but been more lovely than what they were replaced with. Side note: Chris Pratt was in “Parks and Recreation”.
That second one looks like books on end from all directions that was a beautiful floor and you guys did an awesome job that coming from a carpenter of 51 years 👍
The floor at 4:54 looks the same as my house's. It's a brazilian wood we call here "Ipê amarelo". I searched and it seems it's called Yellow Lapacho in english. It's a tree from the Handroanthus genus, and considered to be a hardwood very resistant to fire and bugs.
When we bought our house we ripped up a battered old carpet and found near mint parquet floors underneath. We had them refinished but there was a couple of spots in the closets where the carpet adhesive strips were literally melted into the floors and no amount of sanding or chemicals could get it off
Couple of those floors look like someone saved ALOT of different scraps, and spent a great a great deal of time to make fantastic one of a kind floors. I would be so proud to have something like that in my house.

Gonna have to suggest this to my folks. Lots of nasty stains from small dogs over the years, no matter how clean it is it's still stained. Sanding it may be just the thing to make it new again.
Thats why wooden floor! After years and years just a little work and good as new. Love it. 👏👏👏
Quite an encouragement for my 100+ yr old wood floors. They haven't been properly cared for and need a thorough cleaning and refinish.
That "ornate" floor was amazing. A lot of math went into that, and the craftsman had to cut so many angled cuts, perfectly. I wonder if it was made before or after the advent of table saws. Otherwise, making all of those cuts by hand would be a nightmare, and a testament to the craftsman.
I've gotten to do two old houses both three stories. You're correct, it is a very satisfying task.
That has to be one of the most satisfying jobs! Wood floors in good condition add so much beauty and character to any room.
Very satisfying indeed, especially when they’re old and aged on the surface
I love refinishing hardwood floors over sanding new floors, any day, I've been in the hardwood floor business for over 30 years I've refinished everything from homes to bowling alleys basketball courts to dance floors
My highschool main hall in New Zealand had indoor basketball, netball etc, and the floor was beautiful polished parquet woods of different species.. I remember admiring the artistry and workmanship, and it was well maintained I never saw any damage.
Timber should rarely be painted in my view, enjoy the natural beauty of it. These revamped floors are brilliant , sunburst one is truly a work of art.
Hey man, I sanded floors for a few years and I gotta say it's one of the most satisfying jobs to see done from start to finish
I totally agree!
Grey? Who…wants a grey floor? You did good in preserving the hardwood floor.
And vinyl is really hard wearing, atleast you’re preserving the floors beneath 😁
You’d be amazed. The trend is starting to die now though
Those transformations are astounding!!!
Well done mate! Love the work
You are correct that one floor was mahogany I refinished a mahogany floor about 3 months ago in a mansion and it looked just like the one in this video ABSOLUTELY AMAZING looking wood
I think it had some cherry throughout
I think it looked like cherry wood!
Thank you for watching and commenting, it really does mean a lot to me
All beautiful!!! Love the added humor at the end. 😉
Love your work, loove wood floors. South africa 🇿🇦 🇿🇦
That is art...creativity...mathematics...AMAZING & BEAUTIFUL!
Thanks for watching Paula!
Awesome work! Gorgeous floors!
You sir, are a different breed of artist. Dam good stuff! Now you have got me hooked. Just amazing!
The circular floor was one of the most beautiful thing I've ever seen
Glad you liked it! It was a work of art
👍GREAT Channel
Didn't know I love Herringbone floors, first of these hb in this video was my fav.
The Herringbone floor has a 3D effect. Someone spent a told of time with the layout.
Thank you for saving it.
Yep.
5 year in hardwood flooring business, this is true.
That second one looks like books on end from all directions that was a beautiful floor and you guys did an awesome job that coming from a carpenter of 51 years 👍
Cheers 🍻
The floor at 4:54 looks the same as my house's. It's a brazilian wood we call here "Ipê amarelo". I searched and it seems it's called Yellow Lapacho in english. It's a tree from the Handroanthus genus, and considered to be a hardwood very resistant to fire and bugs.
When we bought our house we ripped up a battered old carpet and found near mint parquet floors underneath. We had them refinished but there was a couple of spots in the closets where the carpet adhesive strips were literally melted into the floors and no amount of sanding or chemicals could get it off
I like the Chris Pratt floor, beautiful contrasts.
The next to last floor, the custom medallion was done in a quilting block style, it’s a type of New York Beauty block. Also a modified Hexie block.
