Nice job, Kyra. Some viewers probably cringed when you boiled the pieces, but it takes a little ingenuity and elbow grease to pull off projects like this. I recently got a set of pieces from Royal Chess Mall India. They're a reproduction of the French Chavet Tournament set that was popular in the late Eighties and early Nineties. This set is in antiqued boxwood for light and ebonized boxwood for dark. The latter costs less than real ebony and weighs the same as antiqued boxwood, avoiding the need to readjust the metal weights in the bottom. Royal Chess Mall also makes a printed 21 in. (53 cm) chessboard in 2.2 in (55 mm) antiqued boxwood and ebony veneer squares. Printed boards resist warping better than conventional ones. I wish there was a way to convert the whole thing to an e-set with the same capabilities of the Chessnut Air....or better yet, the Square-Off Grand Kingdom. Oh, for what it's worth, I hope FIDE lifts its recent ban in time for when you're ready to compete. Everybody, trans or cis, deserves a chance. Like you, I was inspired to learn chess by The Queen's Gambit. After investing that much money, it kind of behooves me to learn all I can, doesn't it?🤣🤣🤣
While that may be food safe... A) I wouldn't use that pot for anything else as we probably don't really know what staining chemicals they used on the pieces originally and B) don't put it in your mouth because still the underlying stain is still there too and who knows what reaction it had with the tung oil and whatnot. In theory it may be food safe, but I don't trust that.
someone need to produce premium pieces for the chessnut air, that looked like too much work, and would like same size pieces, anyway thanks for the vid, I just ordered a chessnut air, I also think the same about chess, I hate-love it,
@@alextomov2237 I think postage and import duty ramp up the price a bit. I know from experience of getting some Atari cartridges to me that were £50 it needed £17 added on or something silly.
Hi, the magnets are just regular magnets! I'm using them to hold up stuff on my whiteboard at the moment. Here's the link for the sensors: www.chessnutech.com/products/separate-chips
Sadly this set is out of stock on Amazon. And similar sets I could find were a little too big (made for 15" board) or not as well carved as this set. Too bad, I wish someone would just sell a replacement/upgraded set for the Air, I would buy it in an instant.
Love the effort you've put into this video as much as the effort into the pieces. Question: how easy was it to remove the base felt on the existing pieces? I have ordered a wooden set from India with the weights removed and going to try with the sensors from the pieces... but before I wreck the pieces, was wondering how reversable the process would be?!
If you're looking to buy an electronic chess set and don't mind the smaller size, yes, definitely! It's the best value on the market right now, and the piece recognition allows for much more use cases than similarly priced competition.
Very cool. I just want to dispute the "best e-chess set" claim :) The Square Off Pro is actually a full size club style board and rollable. SO Pro is $229 w/ free shipping so basically equal in price. For me, if the board isn't the same size as the boards I'll be playing on OTB, then I'm not training my visualization as intelligently as I could be. That was a huge factor in my purchase decision. But if you don't mind baby board chess go for it...JK. Cool project regardless!
Yes, totally possible even in the first-party app, and it's even easier in some third party apps like Chess PGN Master that have a setting to set a delay for detecting sliding pieces
Wow! Great video production and content! Thanks
What a wonderful video... incredible!, thanks!!!

Excellent work. What a fantastic project, well done indeed👍
Many thanks!
Very well done video
Excellent vidéo. What a huge work to put it together. Impressive !
Sweet! Worth it if you have the tools and the skills!

great review! that mic on the floor got me laughing out loud!!!

All we need in the UK is a trade deal with the USA and the import costs melt away to keep this at a good price.
How much does it cost to get the eboard to the uk?

What if you damage a sensor and it no longer works. You've voided your warranty and it's £200 down the drain. 😢
@@happyhornet1000 You can buy a set of the sensor chips for use with 3rd party pieces for around $45
This is so interesting!
I have 1 and love it
Hi are the magnets like any other magnet? Or are they also smart chipped the pieces.
Have you got the link chessnut sensors only link ?

what size pieces did you buy?
Could you please tell me what is the magnet size (diameter and height) in these pieces?
Pawn magnets: 12mm diameter, 6mm height
Knight, Bishop, and Rook magnets: 15mm, 3mm
King and Queen magnets: 18mm, 5mm

Good DIY. Now let's play chess..😊
Do you recommend me to buy it?

Nicely done.. Do you have a link to the wooden chess set that you used to diy?
Links have been added in the description!
Nice project indeed! I don't like the design of Chessnut's knight and this video is inspiring me to do the same
Couldn’t Chessnut sell premium wooden pieces with sensors. It would save a lot of trouble and wouldn’t be that expensive. No brainier!

The software is much better with this set and with an affiliate coupon it comes as cheap as 180$ so it definitely has its advantages as well
5:00 Is it even possible to slide your pieces with chessnut? I thought that doesn't work with this board, unlike the Chessup board
