After eighteen years of golf and managed to get down to a 4hdcp, I switched to Muira forged irons and lost yardage, at least one club. Then, after watching this video I jumped on the TW747p irons with NS PRO 950GH stiff, these irons are the longest in my golf years and the shafts are deadly accurate, golf ball goes where I aimed. I know the forged ones are nice, but keep in mind that you will lose ten yards instead of gaining ten yards, at least in my case!
I've had similar issues with the short irons on player's distance irons...they don't go nearly as long as they should go and the gaps increase dramatically from say the 8-iron to the 9-iron and PW. To me, I think the issue is due to the launch angle being too high. I play the TaylorMade P790's and grew frustrated with the short irons, so I got the TaylorMade P760's in the 8-PW and it was a large improvement.
Hi Ali.... Great review as always. I'm coming to this late but looking to buy my first set of Forged Irons with plenty forgiveness and distance. The Tw747 VX irons seem to tick every box for me. I have the chance to buy a used set from 4 to 11 and just wanted your thoughts before I pull the trigger and buy. I'm playing pxg 0211 DC irons and they have improved my game and am now around 8 hcp. Do you think the 747vx irons offer plenty forgiveness? I'm assuming they won't be as forgiving as the 0211 DC irons but I suppose that's the trade off for going forged players iron. Also... I know you have tested the 0211 DC irons and rated them. Would you say the 747vx irons are a lot smaller in head size or maybe just marginally smaller?
These are very good looking irons but a test without showing the spin rates and peak height just is not enough. I know everyone spins the ball at a different rate but we need to know what the differences in spin rates between the clubs are. Similar point regarding peak height. For most of us amateur golfers a spin rate which is 1000 rpm less than the number on the bottom of the club (ie 7i spinning at roughly 6000 rpm) is a very good rate, I just do not have the club head speed to generate more than that. But if the spin rate is a little low, good peak height will do most of the job of stopping the ball on the green. So if the P iron spun at 1500 rpm less than the other 2 irons but was 3-4 yards higher in peak height that might be enough to stop on a green, but if the height was no different and the spin was 1500 rpm less for Ali as a pro, I would be seriously worried that it would never stop on a green for me
Further, further, further, is the 'Mantra,' for all the makers now. Yes, I know they launch, but you're looking down at a 2 iron...Honma XP-1 4 iron. Better players know that their course didn't get 10% longer over night. But 6 iron clubs for a 'Grand,' 500 large for Utilities, and context by Trackman? Big bucks and 'Trackman Guru Pro's,' just leave me cold. Sorry, but they do.
I'm very disappointed with Honma why do club manufacturers think they have to put out supper strong lofted irons Just so they can say our 7 ( 32 ° players iron , 30 ° cavity back and 28 ° basically game improvement ) iron goes 177 when in reality it's a 6 iron . What a load of crap ..... Manufacturers have lost the plot ...
That maybee so but the gapping from wedges to 7 must be ludicrous if there pw is 45 ° and 7 iron is 28° well that's just stupidity. I wish they would just make the lofts more normal IE 7 iron 33° or 34° no one's is saying don't make the clubs with more forgiveness but just make them more playable because just imagine a mid to high handicap golfer hitting there 5 iron I'm betting not many will hit it well it might be ok for a player of your caliber but unfortunately your the exception not the norm....
Club manufacturers would be better off putting a few mid and high handicap golfers on the club testing and development team ... It would pay off spades in sales in my opinion.....

The VX looks like the club for me, fairly long and forgiving without looking too gaudy.
Please review the TW-X irons.

Amt whites might fix that short iron issue

Any danger you can hit it straight ?!
Ali can you review Honma 747 Driver?
Take out the V design on the back of the 747V and you're looking at the Taylormade Japan TP r9 forged iron.
I can see the comparison but not quite.

In fairness to them the CG is so low that the stronger loft still makes it launch like a 7 iron, getting the ball up in the air.
