I really have to thank you for creating this video. I picked up RPG Maker 2k3 about a couple of months ago, and the main issue I had was creating sprites (since as you said, there are almost no videos that actually show how to create actual sprite art). But after watching how you setup your sprites, then looking at the limitations for each specific set of sprites in 2K3, I more or less taught myself how to create game sprites. A couple of months later, and some of my friends are blown away by my sprites that look like they were literally lifted from an RPG. There is still a bit of trial and error with making the sprites, but this has been one of the few videos that has actually helped me out. If you don't have more, it would be nice if you had a couple more videos, as your teaching style actually helps a lot.
Awesome tutorial, I've always been interested in sprite & pixel art for the longest time but had no idea about shading and stuff. That's like 10 million times easier than what I thought you had to do. I usually dread tutorials on youtube over 10 minutes, but this was still pretty concise and it didn't feel like it dragged on. Thanks for a great tut!
haaaahaha.. the gun sprite gave me the idea of a game.... either some mobs or all of them uses guns and the hero uses a sword or axe or maby magic! i call the game! Swords&Guns
This is the best video Ive found, I really need to make some stuff because Im making a game based on my hometown, thank you so much for explaining so clearly!
You're very much welcome. Yeah, I got really sick of all the videos CLAIMING to teach how to make sprites, but failing to do so. Figured I should just do one myself and save people a lot of trouble. :-)
You're very welcome. I makes my very happy to see it's helping someone. Thanks for taking the time to comment that it helped you. Makes my day to help people. :-)
Daniel Campbell Np! Thank you! Do you mind if I send you an image of my first sprite icon? It's okay if it looks terrible, I'm not asking you to tell me how good it is. Well, maybe I'd like ur opinion but you can be honest with me. Is that okay?
Pie Pierrot Absolutely, but just know I'm no expert. I'm still practicing and getting better too. The RPG Maker Website is a great place to show your work and get feedback too. :-)
Thank you for this I am trying to get into game making and I don't want to have to buy art licensing everytime I make one. Thank you very much sir!!!!!!
It should be in the project information. you'd have to make a project first, go to the project files, find out where the resources are (don't remember the path off the top of my head), find the art resources, find the icon sheet and replace it. Your best bet is to head to the RPG Maker forums. They are MUCH better at explaining it than I am.
It's only a stupid question if you don't ask it. Basically you'll decide how big you want your character to be. I think the default size of a character sprite in RPG Maker is 32x32. You'll want to set your grid size to 32x32 and put your character poses into the top three boxes, and the three boxes underneath those top three. I'll try and make a video some time this week that illustrates this but for now, that's the best explanation I can give in a RUclips comment.
lol "How to Make Spirtes" thanks for the video! I am just now learning to use gimp to make art for my game. i'm mostly just editing already existing things but sometimes this scratch creation is necessary.
When you import the sheet, RPG maker should ask you what you want your translucent color to be. you select the green background and then the icons should not have the green background when appearing in game.
The menu is usually there by default, but if it's not there you should be able to get it to appear somewhere in the "view" menu. I'm on my laptop (which doesn't have gimp) or I'd be more specific. Sorry. Just look under either the "view" or "Windows" menu and you should be able to find it.
I don't feel i need to make any icons just yet.. but i followed this and its a really great video thank you ! Now i would like to find how to make Sprite Characters.. as the Character creation doesn't make everything i want/need.
Like, how to paste it into the existing icon sprite sheet? You should be able to just merge all the layers together and then Copy+Paste them into the existing Icon sheet (assuming you have RPG maker installed). Basically just find the existing sheet in the RPG maker files, replace it, and import it in RPG maker.
Omg are you useing GIMP xD I have been looking FOREVER for a Gimp sprit and tile set video. Can you please make a tutorial on how to make our own tilesets for RPG maker VX ace please it would be Vary helpful :D
There's a vast empty space beneath standart icons, but when I add my sprites there they do not show in the maker, same goes for walls and etc.... it's very annoying.
You sir are qhat we call a god when it comes to sprite animating haha. Did you make all those sprites that we see on your sheet? Those sprites are top quality, and I'd belive it too if you took them right from an rpg! Hopefully you could make some more lessons because I would love to start spriting like you. My friend is making a game and I am in charge of the sprites so any tips would help a bunch!
oh, I'm a terrible spriter, but thank you very much for your kind words. Actually, most of those are the default icons that come with RPG maker. Flattering for you to think I made them though. :-) The biggest piece of advice I have it PRACTICE. The goal is to always be able to look at your work from a year prior and say, "Man, I've gotten so much better since then." Practice really is the key.
That can be a tad more complicated if you are looking to make an actual character sheet. Basically you'll want to make the various animations you want your character to play and make sure they are put in a 3x4 grid (the entire sheet). Then put a "$" in front of the file name. The "$" tells RPG maker that it needs to break up the image into a 3x4 grid and read it as such. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that one.
I need help. Every time I paste the sprite I made, into the IcotSet, the Hue changes and its a different color that I didn't want. Anyone know why this i happening?

How did you get the Icon page from RPG maker to add in the Icons in Gimp. I tried to open the page in Gimp but is did not work D:. Please can you show us how you did it. I would love to see you do more Icon videos for gimp I have been looking forever for an Gimp Icon video. Can you show us how to make Tliesets and charters in Gimp as well it would be vary helpful if you did. Thank you in advanced. Sincerely, animeloversakura101
animeloversakura101 I'll try but sadly I don't have much free time these days. I've got two full time jobs and a 5 year old. Sadly, my time is usually spoken for. If I do ever find myself with some free time though, I'll try and make a video regarding RPG Maker and Gimp.
Not no, to have as I explained, look at me I like pixel art and all that and I never started to figure out anything of size, I open my program and drawing and ready, but I asked a friend to make some sprites for a game and he told me that they had to be 32x32, I did a test and he sent it to me and he said that it is 24x24 ... so I have not the slightest idea how to do it in 32x32. That's what I mean
It really depends on what you're trying to make, and for what program. For instance if you were trying ot make an overworld character for RPG Maker MV, you'd want to make each character animation cell 48x48. If you wanted to make a sprite to use in GameMaker, you'd make it whatever size you want. If you're asking how to make a new image that's 32x32, you just go to "File > New " set Width to 32 and Height to 32.
I think Game Maker lets you set your resolution independently. I'm not really an expert at all though. Best thing to do would be to ask on the GameMaker forums.

Absolutely you can. You can use this method to make anything you want. You'll just want to make sure your dimensions are right and everything.

and now this
THANK YOU
This is the best video Ive found, I really need to make some stuff because Im making a game based on my hometown, thank you so much for explaining so clearly!
Super happy to hear it helped. :-)
Great tip using the opacity to regulate shading! All other vids I've seen involve choosing each shade manually from the palette arg
Thank you so much for this informative video! It was a huge improvement for project individuality that I plan to use to my advantage!
Hey thanks for the Tutorial. This is the exact tutorial i needed to improve my game with my own creativity.
You're very much welcome. Yeah, I got really sick of all the videos CLAIMING to teach how to make sprites, but failing to do so. Figured I should just do one myself and save people a lot of trouble. :-)
Mad props for you man. This is incredibly helpful.
This was unbelievably helpful. Thanks so much for this!
You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Dude you are a genius. Bookmarked this and liked it.
Thanks! I was kind of running out of icons, so its kinda convenient i ran across this video lol
This was so helpful, especially since I'm new to using gimp for this. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you. The program I use is Gimp. Free and a pretty awesome program.
This is a good tutorial on sprite making.
Amazing tutorial! This really expanded my knowledge of pixel art and shading. Will really help me with my upcoming project. Thanks again :)
Thanks man, I'll try it. I really appreciate the help, one of the only videos I could find anywhere XD
Thanks for the help. Now i am making my own sprites.
Thank you. I'm very glad you enjoyed it. I hope it proved useful.

love it, seems like a good start on how to make pixel art :)

thanks for the tutorial man, super helpful

RPG Maker VX Ace I believe is the program I was making them for. Sorry, it's been a long time since I've even booted it up so I'm not 100% sure.

Incredible tutorial! what was the name of the program?
Thank you Seth Rogan!
wow man, epic help. but how can I use this to make an actual spritesheet, like, to change the way my character looks?
good video thank you ^^
my problem is character hair though. character sprites. i'm not good atthem and I don't want to have to rely on other people sprites
Really nice, but what for a Programm is it ? (sry bad eng.)
thx ^^
I need help. Every time I paste the sprite I made, into the IcotSet, the Hue changes and its a different color that I didn't want. Anyone know why this i happening?
Not sure what you mean by "Look like that on the outside of the sprites". You mean the border?
Was gonna ask, are you using some sort of tablet to paint? Or is using mouse okay?
You certainly can use a pad, but I just use a mouse.
Ah ok thanks :)
how do i make actual sprites tho i want to use unity and it says i need specific file formats for sprites and i want to save it in the proper format PNG does nothing for that

How did you get the icon sheet from rpg maker onto gimp?
I was craving a taco at the time. :-) Like any time.
I wonder, did you help make the sprites for Aveyond? :o
+Mariah Hernandez Me? Definitely not me. :-)
I only ask because I recognize the metal helmet as Skull Helm in Aveyond: Rhen's Quest
B) But if it wasn't you, I'll take your word for it lol

Daniel Campbell ok thank you :D
Does RPG Maker come with GIMP, or do you have to get that separately?
It's not included, but it's free a free download. Gimp is completely free.
is there a way to minimize a custom sprite's movement animation?
i made a sprite but RPG maker don't open it when i try to import :/
Thanks!
Okay one more question. I don't want to sound rediculously stupid or anything, but I'm kind of new at this. How would I set up a 3x4 grid?
Can I create an Bracelet with this tutorial?
You can create anything you want. As long as you can draw it, you can make it. If you can't draw it, just keep practicing. You'll get there!
Can you show how to set it up like that? Cause right when i open it up i am looking through all the options and i am so confused on how to use it...
what program are you using for it?
What is the difference between a 32x32 sprite and a 24x24 sprite?
8 pixels. Well, 16 pixels if you want to get technical.
Where do you find the icon sheet? you never explained that
When i load the icon set into gimp, the 24x24 grid doesnt match up like that at all, even after restarting.
The Hobbyist i believe you have to switch it under settings to pixel, otherwise it has a different set space
CAN you make the sprite a 25 by 25?
My sprite kept changing color when I imported it. Can anyone help me?
one question... what are the dimensions for game maker studio/game maker 8 icons?
I think Game Maker lets you set your resolution independently. I'm not really an expert at all though. Best thing to do would be to ask on the GameMaker forums.
I'm very sorry but I did not really understand that. when I go into the folder there is nothing there in RPG Maker so I can not copy anything or erase
yep, thanks
How do you make it look like that on the outside of the sprites? Plz tell me, i am so confused.
tysm
What is the software ur using?
How do I get access to my IconSheet? I cant seem to find it.
thanks, found it. But i dont understand HOW to put in the icon
When I imported the new icons the background became green and not transparent. How can I fix this?
I have a question how can I open the icon set ?
How did you get the grid the way it is?
how do you get the menu to your left, i dont have that menu??
"Ok... Now that just looks like a penis..." XD
I made a sprite sheet in paint can I import it into RPG Maker 2003?
DOMAlN as long as the dimensions are the same and you put them in the right place, yes.
"Kinda looks like a penis' xDDDDD great tutorial though thank you!!! Stay you!
