Looks idyllic! I think it’s a sign of a well developed talent when she said something to the effect of “don’t worry, it doesn’t look like much now”. Having that confidence and experience to know what you can do.
Jessica, I really love it when you do these types of videos vs the ones where you "talk to the people on the screen" .....I can really learn so much when the "chatter" does not distract my train of thought!!! you are a great teacher, and I am really considering taking some of your classes!!!
Sitting by the Umpqua river in Elkton, Oregon, watching this masterpiece and mustering the strength to go sit out there and paint and not make a fool out of myself.... this is SOOOO BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Not a fool at all! Just being out there is brilliant and the best step! That first step is always the most difficult. So you’re half way there! I hope you had a peaceful afternoon!
Showing a panoramic picture starting with the fence and going across the bridge and far shore was a great idea .it allows us to almost feel where you are and gives us great reference photos to work with. As usual your explanation of your thought process during your actual strokes is a great teaching tool. Thank you for sharing with us.best of luck I’ll spread the word at school
Love this little painting for many reasons. The movement and lines are magical making a strong composition. Your greens are amazing along with your neutrals. I was shocked when you choose yellowish tones on the rocks in the front, but it totally makes sense. Your commentary is perfect and easy to follow. Thank you for sharing these videos with all of us.
I love all of your videos, but this one was especially helpful because I just finished my first plein air painting at a river. Now I am ready to go back and do it again. Thanks so much. You are terrific!
Your plein air paintings want to make me take my easel on the road! Thanks for great videos that explain what you're doing, from brushes to paint colors....I appreciate it very much!
Your vids are very informative and helpful. In particular for me your thinking process as relates to aerial perspective. Light/dark, warm/cool, gray/vibrant. Thanks!
That "dusky" voice, those gorgeous eyes, that beautiful smile...AND your an Impressionist, Plein Air no less, this is a no brainer...count me subscribed! Just found your channel and admire your work...and you! Cheers, Greg Douglass
So nice! I appreciate all the information you gave while painting the bridge! Mine would have ended up a total mess! While working on form, I would have totally ignored distance and light color differences. Thanks so much.
Thank you so much for these videos. I am learning so much from you. Love the plain air painting. I'm eager to go out and paint something. Your paintings are so beautiful and your personality is so engaging. I want to grow up and be like you.
Just subscribed. I’ve enjoyed your videos. I did my first Plein Air painting a few days ago. One of the best experiences of my life. Definitely will do some more. Thank you for your videos. They are informative and inspiring.
I been painting for the past 10 years I'm more like Bob ross stile, I been watching the way you do your paintings and I love it ,i learn new ways of painting thanks.
Thank you Jessica. Your videos are awesome. You are a great inspiration. I am on my way to Central Park in New York to plein air paint. I get those Black too...lol. What are we gonna do about that? Where are you painting in this video?
Excellent work. Very engaging smile and personality, along with a great explanation of technique, makes for a wonderful video. Well done. Happily subscribed.
Hi. I am going to a pleinair aid event in Fairhope, Al in a couple weeks an want to paint the bay scene and a red snapper. I watched your video to familiarize myself with red snapper. You did great! Thankyou.
Jessica, love your videos and of course your art. I have a little question, i've heard that lindseed oil is flamable, so do you have a specific rutine with your papel towels and their disposal??? I would really love to know your "rutine". Thanks
Hi VKnowles, Linseed oil in large amounts on rags can be flammable in the right conditions. In my 30 years of painting, I have always simply wiped my brushes off on paper towels, thrown them away, when the can was full, I threw the bag from the can away. Never had a problem. I think when people wipe up large spills of linseed oil, and cram the drenched rags in a cramped garbage can, they can heat up and ignite. That is not an occurrence in my studio, nor in anyone's I've ever heard of. Either way, I'd hate to mislead anyone into doing anything that violates their conscience. Some professional artists I know take heavy precautions to avoid spontaneous combustion. To each his own. :)
Hiya Jessica, could I just ask a stoopid question? how do you keep your palette clean? My pallette gets in such a mess I end up throwing it away and I mostly use the wax paper variety but would LOVE to use a real one professionally xx lots of love Debs in Spain
Hi Debbie, (Not a stupid question at all!) The palette is a big concern for many and in fact, I am planning on doing a video (or a webinar series...) just called "Palette Talk" to be offered on our web site soon. There are tricks to keeping your palette clean, and to begin with, you want to scoop out only as much paint as you feel you may need for a passage. I only use my brush for mixing, (not a palette knife) which can use too much paint, making a bigger mess that needed and wasting more paint. My Palette for painting outdoors is very small, so I am frequently scraping off my work area, wiping it down, and beginning anew. To be fair, I am bad at remembering at the end of a session in the studio, to wipe off my palette, and occasionally I have had to sand the whole thing down, and apply a few coats of Spar varnish to it...it happens... but i do love the real thing!
Because I paint nearly every day, the seem to keep almost indefinitely, but if I didn't they'd dry up after about 3 days. I always put out more than I need, because I like to paint thick and don't want to stop in the middle of a painting, and also it's frustrating to get out more paint while filming, too. I'm always trying to make my time in the field more efficient. I can always take the extra paint, back home and put it in a small plastic container with a lid and put it in a freezer. In fact, I put the paint directly on the inside of the lid of a plastic container, for freezing.
Regards; my admired lover of brushes and color. I write not only for "Piropiarte", but to make a request. For the people who make the automatic translation by Google Translator, we find it a bit difficult, to follow them, for a very important reason: "You speak very quickly". To the translator, the words are very fast. I know what you do for your effusion to shorten the time of the video You are loved and we admire you very much. We pray for you God bless you. From Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain A hug, Beautiful.
Do you ever have people bug you while you paint? I've watched some videos of other plein air painters encountering strangers in remote places and sometimes their comments can be brutal! XD lol...especially when the onlooker pops up at the 'ugly' stage of the painting and they don't have the vision to see what it's going to become.
Yeah, but I have a unique gift of completely blocking out all other sound. People can be right next to me talking and if I’m focused, I won’t hear them at all. I could be tortured and still have no clue what was being said. So, lame comments from people don’t bother me. Maybe my kids helped with that too. They’d come in the studio and ask “are you gonna leave it like that?” Or “... are you done?” And a personal favorite “... what is it?...” I’ve heard them all! 😂😂😂
This is an Open Box M easel and any tripod will work. I recommend one that is sturdy, however. You can always buy the one that Open Box M sells, but I have had success with a standard one (a lot cheaper, too).
Looks idyllic! I think it’s a sign of a well developed talent when she said something to the effect of “don’t worry, it doesn’t look like much now”. Having that confidence and experience to know what you can do.
Jessie is a master simplfier for those out there reluctant to get started, with so much to take in. This

how do you stack your paintings? vertical against each other or horizontal on top of each other?
I just subscribed just because you are pretty.
Hei and thank you for a nice video :-) A tips for you. You must buy a, "dead cat" for your microfon.
What kind of camera are you using now??
This was because!
I mean beautiful, not because. Lol
how do you get the brush fibers to show up so nicely?
I'm using bristle brushes, not synthetic or sables. Hope that answers your question! :)
Armand Zottola: why don’t you use smaller brushes for the foreground?
You probably been asked this question before but how long do your paints last on your pallet you have way more than what you need
Because I paint nearly every day, the seem to keep almost indefinitely, but if I didn't they'd dry up after about 3 days.
