i applaud your perseverance Dennis, and the fact you are obligated to fix the customer's reel, at what point does it become cost efficient to fix the reel or just get a new one?? I'm sure Chris and Seymour would agree, the older reels are built to withstand the test of time.
I will generally let a customer know the alternatives when the cost of parts and service is greater than 50% of a new reel. A lot of the older reels I get in a sentimental, so cost in not the priorly consideration in restoring the rel.
Thanks - Dennis
I can't remember how many Mitchell 300's I worked on and went from my shop to the house watching your video on them then back to the shop. I finally got a camera like yours. The time it saves is worth the price. I even got a computer so I don't have to leave to look up schematics and order parts. even just a cell phone can be a lifesaver if it has a halfway decent camera
Thanks for the tips. I frequently bring my iPad tablet to the shop to look at the schematic. The advantage there is that I can magnify the view by zooming in to see a specific part or location - Dennis
I am quite happy I don’t have a Penn spinning reel made in China particularly an early one like this. Sometimes when I hear that same gear sound it is a shim issue and you have to use trial and error to get if corrected. When I first started surf fishing I was always in the water when I’ve had to replace a main gear I almost always get the pinion gear too. I think I started doing that based on your advice. Often, though, with older vintage reels you can’t find both gears or even one gear. Then it’s time to find a cheap parts reel with the parts you need. Even then you’re still taking a chance. Very I nformative video Dennis. Also, thank you for your note today! - Chris
You've come a long way Chris - Well done and sage advice - Best wishes - Dennis
I have some of the made in America ones, and 2 of this particular model. They’ve run great for 20 years but now one has a squeak that I cannot for the life of me figure out
I have a 420SS that looks very similar to this one, except mine says "Made in USA". What are some of the differences between these two reels?
The 420SS was the 2nd Generation of Penn Spinfishers. The 3rd generation was the 4200SS and then came the SSG. There are a lot of differences in the various generations. Your 420SS has a different internal gear set up as well as the A/R design. As you noted, Yours was made in the USA and the SSG was the first of the Spinfishers made in China.
Thanks for asking
Dennis
My 440ssg is running smooth like butter, but there’s a slight squeak that I cannot get rid of. Any ideas?
Where is the squeak? It ay be in the handle knob??? wd40 will fix that
Be a nice Reel when he gets it rebuilt .
