  • In this video I go through installing a trailer hitch onto a 2019 Hinda CRV. I also add wiring to run the trailer lights.

I bought mine used and didn’t have the wire to fish the bolts thru. Had weed trimmer line I cut into four 12” pieces and duct taped them to the ends of the bolts. Actually worked pretty good! Used needle nose pliers to pull the line thru the hole. I also put the center bolt on first, loosely, to support it while I got the side bolts lined up. Helped a lot, especially if flying solo on the project.

Very nice! It's a bit of a bear by yourself but sounds like you are plenty handy to figure it out! Thanks for sharing! I'm sure your method will help someone else.

Took me about an hour and a half to install with no problems. (sorry, I work slow and meticulous). I got the hitch on by just loosening the rear muffler hanger only. Tight spot, but got my fasteners threaded, tightened and torqued. I'm 74, so it was no problem working on a blanket on the ground. Thanks for the info.

I'm about to do the same install on 2020 Honda Pilot for my travel across 2500 miles DC to CA. Your video helped shave off some doubts/questions I had to get it done right.
    Thanks for your video.

This was my weekend project and I had a difficult time with the rubber mounts. But after a while, I was able to get enough clearance space to fasten the bolts. Probably the most time spent was getting those 4 bolts secured. Thank you for sharing your tutorial because the manual wasn't very clear with each step.

The best. I followed the way you installed your harness. It truly works

Thanks that was a good video. One thing mentioned in another video was they used a cargo strap to manage the careful lowering of the exhaust components. That must have been a Houdini moment getting the 4 bolts attached by yourself.

Just finished installing the same hitch on my 2019 CRV. It took me about an hour and a half. I haven't done the wiring yet. I'll do that another day.
Oh, by the way, I'm 79 years old.

I have a 2020 Northern Euro spec CRV 1.5 T manual transmission its rated to tow 4400llbs, I have Thule tow hitch installed and tow a 3100llb Leisure caravan, it tows really nice ,I am surprised the CRV in the USA has such a low towing limit.

The US towing standards are more stringent largely because people trailer at much higher speeds in the US, the European and US model of this car are likely the same aside from a few minor regional changes.

Thank you. Thumbs up. Just a quick note. If I am only transporting something during the day, can I skip the wiring part? That would make things so much easier. Thanks in advance for the response.

I believe you would need functioning trailer lights no matter what.

Thanks for the video. Do you know if the wiring harness will work with a Honda CR-V with FWD, NOT AWD? It sounds like FWD CR-Vs many not have the connection taped up.

To be honest I have no idea but I would imagine it would.
It is pretty simple to pop a few of the interior trim pieces off and take a look before hand.
If the taped up plug is not there, they typically make an in line plug that you can plug in line with your tail light wiring harness. Without doing research, I'm not sure if they make something like that for the CR-Vs but it could be something to look into.
      Good luck!

@@craftzmanchris9859 Thanks for your quick reply. Today I popped off some of the interior trim. As you suggested, it was easy. However, there is no taped up plug. Neither Curt nor Tekonsha claim to have a custom wiring harness that will work with my 2023 Honda CR-V. My local Uhaul dealer says they can handle wiring my car for trailer lights, even if it takes splicing wires, so I am going to install the hitch and let them do the wiring. Thanks again!!!

2019 Honda CR-V AWD, Model LX - Could not find the plug taped for connection. Missing on the wiring harness on my car. I am a pretty good mechanic, so I know what I am looking for. Anyone else run into this problem.

Are you looking behind the upper plastic portion of the drivers side? I kept looking behind the bottom plastic and couldn’t find it.

What lights did you have on the trailer?

    • @craftzmanchris9859

I don't remember exactly but that are sealed LED lights. The only way to go on trailer lights.

The rubber hangers or the trim in the trunk?
WD-40 helps get the hangers off but it's still a pain in the butt.
