The “C” stands for Century. They were originally used on movie sets to hold 100-inch by 100-inch reflector panels to bounce light. Those panels were called Century panels for short, then just C panels. That’s why we call them C stands.
Hi Joanie - thanks for this super helpful video! I bought the c-stand, rapid adapter, and the swivel/tilt head from B&H. All is good, except your B&H link leads to the wrong size rapid adapter. Same for the Adorama link. I'm now re-purchasing from the Amazon link. The correct one is: Manfrotto 014-14 Rapid Adapter - 5/8" Stud to 1/4-20" Thread. The wrong one is: Manfrotto 014-38 Rapid Adapter - 5/8" Stud to 3/8" Thread. Just thought you'd want to know!
Great video!! I bought my first C Stand almost 2 years ago and love using it. However I never realized that the legs on the base are different lengths! After watching your video I measured the legs and sure enough each one is a different length. I have a studio light along with a pretty heavy softbox mounted to the stand and I've had a couple close calls with it almost falling over when the boom arm was extended. Thanks to your video, I used some masking tape to mark the longer legs and now when I am shooting I will know which way to rotate the base of the stand for maximum stability. Really great tip and just goes to prove that there is always more to learn. Thanks for the post!!
@@TheBiteShot you drape the sandbag over the longer/higher leg. Otherwise it won’t do anything except rest on the ground. Also, never, ever, ever place a sandbag on top of the C Stand. It will max out the stand’s weight capacity and create a high center of gravity causing all your expensive gear to potentially topple over.
Whenever discussing C stands you should always mention the "righty tighty, leftie loosey" rule. Basically you want the mounted gear to be on the right of the grip head so the weight of it tightens the knob, and not vice versa.
@@IstoryangPagibig so the place where you put the arm, or any other object, (the holes in the gobo head) tighten to the right. so when you put something in it the weight should be on it so that it turns to the right if you were to put pressure on it, if it turns to the left it will looses and fall. on the right it will simply get tighter and never fall

Hi, can you please send me the link for the bit that attaches from the boom stand to the camera? I can’t find it anywhere? Thank you in advance and happy Christmas to you all
For those fortunate enough to have stands laying around use two stands connected with a horizontal bar. In between, the camera & head will then be connected to the bar. The whole setup is a real tank.
hello I saw your video and I must say that it is fantastic ... I wanted to ask you a question ... are you not afraid that the camera may not be level? thank you
Sand bagging the tall LEG is very important for safety if you're putting anything heavy on it. Especially over the head of a live subject.... A nice precautions for anything expensive too. Things get bumped! Just keep the sand bag off the floor so all its weight is held by the base of the stand. O and I've never seen any pro grip suspend the bag from the top of the riser.... That additional top heaviness might be counterproductive. But you could hand a bag from the opposite end of the boom rod as a counter weight for something of similar weight that you want to boom over your subject, like a top light. Still better put an additional bag(s) on the base in that case. Good luck, whoever! :)
Thank you for explaining this. I’ve watched five videos on c stands and everyone assumes you already know how to mount things to the C stand. Subscribed!

Great video what I want to know is how to you focus when your camera is up in the air. Do you have a link on how that is done. Thanks I love your videos.
Hi Joanie, First, I love all the formation you shared . I’m getting more into food photography along with my nature stuff. and really like the c-stand. I was using a smaller tripod and always worried about the camera tipping into the food. So, I purchased the almost same things except the head. A purchased a new one. One thing I have to mention is that there’s a bushing on the adapter because the head won’t fit(screw on). I watched the video again and saw that you have that bushing on your adapter. I called bh and ordered one for $2.11.
Had my eye on one for awhile, saving it for the "when you have space" wishlist. Usually shoot free hand. As anti "tasty" video as I am, I still need overhead capabilities when necessary. Great one Joanie!
Interesting, I have two C Stands that I purchased from ebay for $200 dollars. Watching your video tutorial I have to ask, what are the names of the two mount accessories that you mentioned you purchased from B&H which you placed onto the C Stand bar to hold and suspend your camera?
It's my first watching you channel but really it's a very value content.. and you have a hilarious character and you are professional.. thanks I will be abig fan from Egypt
Hi Joanie.. very useful information in the video. Thanks. Could you please tell which adapter and mount head did you use. Also please let me know the brand of the c stand too. Thanks in advance
Hello! Quick question for you! I bought the Manfrotto 234RC Monopod Head, and the Adapter linked in your gear list (5/8M-3/8W Adapter), however, when I go to screw in the monopod head, it doesn't fit! What am I missing? Thanks so much for the amazing tips!
I am so amazed watching your videos. You are so kind to share everything you do. You are not only talented but warm hearted.... Thank you for the info.
So glad you're showing this. I have a ton of tripods already, so it seems silly to get another one to try and do overhead shots. Makes a lot more sense to get a C-stand that I can then use in a variety of ways including top down shots.
How do you view your composition during shoots when using these? I have a overhead mount but I’m wondering if there’s a better way to check what your shooting than trying to strain your back or moving the mount. Love your videos!!
I am curious, what are you using at 1:50 I noticed it is not the same thing as in the set up of the camera in the rest of the video? And how is it different? Thank you :)
Hi, another great video Thank you!!! But what QR plate are you using (tripod head) it does not look like a ball head. I have watched over and over to try and figure it out. Would love to know. Thank you for your inspiration.
The most important thing when working with your camera on a boom; is to have a cable release, the wobbling and oscillations of the camera can go on for 5 to 10 seconds before it settles down to "absolutely-still". All of the various stands, boom fittings and all the rest of it amount to a Meccano set; whatever fits; fits, there must be a thousand combinations of equipment you can use for overhead camera work, the critical thing is the camera is given time to go "absolutely-still". Best wishes.
great Video...thank you! .....are those arms also available without the actual C stand? ...thinking of mounting it on a heavy duty light stand and of course sand bagging it...just haven't got the space for a C stand atm....
Just stumbled across this video and it's super helpful (like the rest of your videos!). I've made a "Frankenstand" C stand out of stuff I had lying around: a microphone stand (musician!), a cheap super clamp and a couple of thread adapters and my tripod head. It works really well and immediately improved flat lay stuff! Thanks for the reccomendation!! 😁
We have been looking at your videos and they are really educational and entertaining. they have become our to-go tutorials. Thank you for sharing. Been trying the figure out the model of your Head Plate but can't seem to find it, could you share?
Hi Joanie, thought it was this video but can't find it. You had a longer stainless rod attached to your camera and it slid into the C stand grip thing. Do you have a link and or name for that one?
That was a homemade thing that I used when I first started the channel. I made the change to the things shown in this video because they're available for purchase.
Hi! Sorry about that! Sometimes depending on the way they ship it, you need to screw on to the adapter the additional little silver ring that comes with it called the bushing. That will help it fit.
even though many people think that it is to mount 100" flags onto it, from my research it apears to me, that the 100 refers to 100" tall, ie the top height of the telescoping pole, NOT with a boom on the end of it.
Hi Joanie.... quick one how far horizontal can you mount the camera safely. I would want more horizontal reach like shooting for example, something in the center of a 6x6ft table setting...is it possible to get more horizontal reach?

I would not place a sand bag on top of the C-Stand, but rather drape it over one foot. If you place it on top the C-Stand will become top heavy.
Thx!
