I will say that when we toured Vanderbilt we were made aware that there is a Vanderbilt style. If you don't blend in, you'll be left out. Northwestern was much more natural with kids really being comfortable with their own cultural, and not needing to fit a mold.
Vandy was without a doubt the school that would have been the biggest culture shock for him, but he used that as an advantage in his Vandy essay. He did get accepted to Vandy (without an interview, or even seeking one against my best advice), but got accepted to Northwestern and Brown as well and ultimately chose Brown.
