On Wednesday, Gavin DeGraw visited PS22 to perform two of his songs with the kids! Not only were we all majorly impressed by Gavin's talent, he showed himself to be an exceptionally cool, gracious, and humble human being. But don't take our word for it -- see it here for yourself in this fun and insightful interview with the amazing Gavin DeGraw conducted by the also-amazing kids of the PS22 Chorus of 2014! Stay tuned for the performances in two forthcoming videos....

I am a private vocal coach, choir director and I taught music and chorus for several years and I am a HUUUUUUUGE Gavin DeGraw fan...this interview was awesome and the students were awesome in the performance videos with Gavin. I've seen him in concert twice, met him in person once during a meet and greet...very down to earth. My favorite quote: "If I do what I love, then I never have to practice, 'cause I'm just doing it all the time anyway." Love it! ...And Love Gavin, too!

What I find most endearing is when a star like this and some of the others lose themselves in the moment. I don't feel lose is the right word, rather they kind of find themselves again. Little by little they just open up and it's like they are back with family just being human. Some seem to relish in it. It's beautiful to see his reactions and telling stories like he is the long lost brother coming home for thanksgiving. I love this.

The other thing I noticed was that he was REALLY speaking with the kids. He didn't play to the camera. I really enjoyed this much better than any interview at a talk show could ever be. He was just being human. I'm not a big fan of his music but I am a fan of him now.

I just had a bit too much time so I transcribed Mr. B.'s Secret Rules for successful music-making:
Become the song. Be the character in the song. Make it real to you. Bring your heart and soul. Bring everything you’ve got into the performance. Put your whole body into it. Don’t just sing with your voice. And keep it real. Do you. Make it you. Come with something. Make it something that means something to you. And then you can’t go wrong.

That was totally worth watching. If I'm not missing something there are a couple of what I call 'more than music' moments hidden in here. And Mr. B.'s secret for successful music-making. (I guessed some of them before, and I think at least one of the rules has already been followed with this group: Put your whole body into singing.)

He's very charming and detailed with the answers. I like it. And he made me fix my problem with the new youtube comments (I couldn't) so...Thanks for that as well :D
By the way... what is he saying around 19:03?? Because it sounded like CZECH to me... that's my native tongue and it got me super excited :)))

Chutzpah is (according to Wikipedia) a yiddish word that stems from a hebrew word. So, no, that's not Czech, at least not originally.

Andre Heinrichs Thank you very much. It's interesting :) You know, I noticed that we (Czechs) actually use a lot of originally yiddish words.
Do you now by any chance what came like a respond to that (woman's voice)? :)

Oh, By the way: Am I the only one who sees at 20:23 that Rain (if that's how her name is spelled) realizes that Mr. B. teaches the Chorus to behave according to the rules he explains for successful music. Oh, and if I'm not totally mistaken then those rules help PS22 Chorus be what it is.
