Aw you missed my favorite dialogue Bond: he tried to kill a friend of mine. Camille: A woman? Bond: Yes. But it's not what you think. Camille: Your mother? Bond: She likes to think so.
Bond is referring to when the double agent tried to kill M at the beginning of this movie, right? Well, Greene didn't try to kill M, it was the double agent. But I guess since Greene apparently ordered the kill, then it's basically the same thing, hu?
The fact that they used a real-world news story for the villain’s motivation because it was so unbelievably evil that it somehow perfectly fit into a Bond movie is both hilarious and terrifying.
I always liked the bit when Bond easily escapes the agents and goes back to finish talking to M, who just gives him that 'what took you so long?' look.
Casino Royale was so good, I can understand why some people thought this one was a bit of a letdown. But I liked it. tho I still say Olga was a better Bond girl. the fact that, she never even slept with him, just makes her more unique than all the other bond girls. her character literally had no no reason to have any romance with Bond, they were only together coz they wanted revenge from the same guy. and I'm glad that the filmmaker didn't forced another unnecessary romantic arc on her
One detail that I love is that so much of the movie is set in oppressively hot environments - but the final scene takes place in the snow. It doesn’t just symbolize Bond’s feeling of relief; it makes you *feel* it.
Im pretty sure the whole “foreign accent makes them more terrifying” is an actual movie trope. The foreign accent makes them different, and so it makes villains easier to dislike or be afraid of.
I think it is more about uncanny valley then anything else. Especially if we are talking about some really damn good English. Because the pronunciation is good enough, you can't really pinpoint where the guy is coming from more precisely than general ethnicity. Which, congratulations, doesn't help at all because we are talking about regions one third of the Europe in size. And then, no matter how good it gets, you can never truly get rid off some odd speech quirks that you bring from your own language. Like, yes, the word is correct, but what an odd choice! Or if in the middle of the perfect speech there is some word that clearly is "the next best thing", because, for example there is some issue with back-translating or simply not enough granularity to convey meaning. For example, in Slavic languages we don't differentiate between the crimes very much. To us "killing" and "assasination" are the same word. Just like "burglary" and "theft". And these are not the words you use in your every day speech, so it is easy to forget what exactly each of them means and use them incorrectly. Which, by the way is a sin, that writers don't use it more often. It is either for a very comedic effect or the accent itself is so over the top that comrades all over the world feel shame for it. Like, come on. If you want your character having an accent, at least bother to research it and think about it.
I've always been a fan of Dominic Green as a villain. He's the perfect type of slimy psychopath that was the logical progression from Le Chieffre in the last movie.
Exactly. Le Chifre was cold and calculated for the most part - while also being in between two nails so to speak. Contrary, Green is just psychotic and gives little credit to his own existence, thus he is difficult to pressure because he doesn't have any comfort zone to begin with. He's always in a grey area where you don't really know what to expect from him. A slimey guy who can slither between higher powers and work situations to his benefit. Much more akin to real-life behind the curtain "villains".
@bloodymuzzle Right, quantum is much more of an internal journey for Bond, so it does make sense that instead of being the main feature of the movie Greene is just a despicable asshole along the way.
Maks Mikkelsen is usually the person most think of when thinking about treasured Danish actors. But Jesper Christensen (Mr. White) deserve some love to. (I also love how he read the Danish Harry Potter audiobook, best book reading I have ever experienced).

Same. I was never a Bond fan or even casual fan until Casino. I didn’t like the smooth posh Bonds, and I liked the gritty imperfect Craig Bond of the first two. Skyfall and Spectre are my least favorites for this reason (his casual wear in the latter two compared to the former two are good examples).
Upon rewatching it just after Casino Royale, I found myself with newfound fondness for QoS. It’s pairs with Casino Royale pleasantly, encompassing and concluding Vesper and first film’s storylines.
@@tactikiller Skyfall was a gritty and imperfect Bond though. It's also probably the most personal bond film. It explores his childhood trauma, we also see him get hurt and fail the tests, and fail to save the girl. And at the end we see Bond break character when M dies. Skyfall was amazing.
I’m pretty sure the Spider-Man pointing meme in this isn’t for overreaching intelligence agencies, but imperialist powers in developing nations. Britain in the 1800s and the US during and after the Cold War.

This made me happy to see! I was always rather mystified by the dislike this movie attracted, as it's by far my favourite Bond film. I love the more relatable villain and stakes, the relationship between Bond and Camille, and the way Bond actually seems to have grown as a character by the end.
Amazing timing! I just rewatched QOS. Really appreciate it more on future viewings. I get a lot more from it watching it with Casino Royal as a double feature.
there's something weirdly hysterical to me about how matter-of-fact Bond is when he tosses Camille's unconscious body into some guy's arms and just keeps going.
For all the reasons I love this film and continue to defend it, the biggest was the plot. It's fuckin' real and that was before I learned it ACTUALLY HAPPENED. It made Quantum scarier than any other Bond threat to me.
Sorry but are you nuts? That scene at the opera was ridiculous. That was just utterly poor edited. Nothing more. It was just poor from the editors and stunt coordinator stand point

I always liked Quantum of Solace, never understood why it got so much hate. Now, after the last film (No Time to Die), Solace is one of the best of the Craig era.
I've always enjoyed QoS, I never understood why it go so much hatred. It's got some stunning shots (one of which had a photo taken behind the scenes that eventually became the cover art for the video game 007: Blood Stone), the most grounded plot of the franchise, and the *second* best Bond girl behind Vesper (if you can really even call either of them that, so much so that I completely forgot they even kissed in this movie and I've seen it half a dozen times). I understand that Quantum as an organization only exists because EON didn't own the rights to Spectre until 2012, but I like it as an idea and it ending up as just an arm of the larger Spectre was a good move, but poorly executed. I would have liked to see Bond spend a few films going after the other seven before tackling the head, but I also understand that that would have extended far beyond the usual Bond actor's tenure.
I was disappointed that Quantum was an arm of SPECTRE and not the other way around. If I could control the situation I would have had In CraigBond 3: SPECTRE becomes part of the CraigBond universe because it is needed by Quantum. Now that Quantum is more out in the open they would need a SPECTRE. division. In CraigBond 4: SPECTRE takes over Quantum from the inside. You could have introduced Blofeld in 3 and even in 4 Bond unknowingly helps Blofeld take down Quantum In Cragibond 5: You get a less cringy background for the personal conflict between Bond and Blofeld because Bond realized he was used by Blofeld.
@@claytoncourtney1309 An interesting take and it may have been thrown around, but I think the combination of not owning the rights to Spectre or Blofeld until after Skyfall's release and the questionable nature of what would actually be Craig's last outing of Bond (he originally said he never wanted to play the character again after Skyfall) would have made your vision hard to get out there.
@@needamuffin People regularly misread that line. He said he'd rather die than do another Bond movie now almost immediately after finishing the gruelling filming and promotion of a Bond movie. @@tyrannicpuppy I understand that idea completely, but at the same time "I would rather die than do another movie" is pretty hard to interpret any other way other than he's done with the character.
@@needamuffin If you have just finished (like within weeks) one of the most gruelling experiences of your life, and some jackass journalist is asking how keen you are to put yourself through that experience again right away... It would be like asking a boxer who is standing there with three broken bones and a shattered face how eager he is to go into a another fight right away. The fact he has since come back and done another two movies as that character since saying the comment also proves he wasn't done with the character. People see acting as this easy thing. you just stand in front of a camera do a thing and if it's good your done, if not do it again. But like any job it is intense and emotional and draining. Actors also hate being shoehorned into only a single role, so being asked to keep doing more of the same over and over and over is going to grate on the nerves too.
I enjoyed the contrast between casino royales shower scene with vesper and now the fire scene with olga. The contrast in emotions between the two scenes is a nice touch as well. Well done to the director 👍
This is a great review of the movie. That was a fantastic point about the title referring to Bond getting a bit of comfort in realizing that Vesper really did love him after all. I never thought of it that way!

9:16 Giancarlo Giannini is always a win (awesome actor and Voice actor too) Also, from an Italian, the exchange between him and her wife in Italian sounds different because Mathis ask his wife why she offers Bond wine (in Italian Mathis doesn't say fine, but is implied), but she didn't replied "you buy only cheap wine" but "It's just cheap wine", so in Italian is actually the wife that is serving intentionally two-buck Chuck to Bond. @CinemaWins in English subtitles they make Mathis look stingy for no reason
“Forgive her, forgive yourself” absolutely love that line and the scene as Mathis tells that to Bond. I think he essentially knows how much Bond is hurting after Vesper’s betrayal and might just be seeking if she truly did care or love him during his revenge. Goes to show he’s still a young Bond.

I like your idea as to why they picked Tosca as the opera... in truth it was just the opera that the Bregenz festival happened to be playing that season. Initially the production had hoped they could put up an old set that featured a huge skeleton looking down at the stage, but that was already disassembled, so the giant eye also did the job quite well.
Of all the Bond movies Craig made, Quantum of Solace had the best action sequences IMO. Shaky cam and jump cuts were a bit much but still let you follow what actually happens. Also, fight in the hotel room is one of the greatest fight scene ever filmed

The death of Fields is such a genius scene for the whole film in many layers!! It is a homage to Goldfinger while used for a different story, but also M tells Fiels is an innocent woman who is far away from the world of violence to tell Bond and all the viewers how poorly James Bond is doing his professional job, but most of all Field was 'just' an employee with a deskjob working on files... just like Ian Flemming! Ian Flemming had a deskjob for the British secret service, until he retired and moved to his Jamaican residence called 'Goldeneye' and where he wrote the James Bond novels. The novels were him fantasizing about field agent of the British secret service, something that was dangerous for him and for the character Fields. Quantum of Solace is even with all it's flaws maybe the most flemming-esque James Bond film. Flemming always wrote the character in the novels always with full of unhealthy arrogance and 'cut to the chase'-mentality.
The way M cruelly dresses down Bond ... "They'll do anything for you, won't they?" ... M is the one who sent Fields on that mission. M chose to send a naive innocent pretty girl. M did that, knowing that she herself would go personally to bring Bond in, and he couldn't just ignore her. M sent a pretty little girl just because she knew a pretty little girl would _slow down Bond_ more than some other agent who Bond would simply ditch right away. M sent Fields to her probable death just to slow down Bond for a few hours. But Bond doesn't see it because he loves M too much to even consider it being her fault. Just how far did M plan it? Is it just a coincidence that Fields is so similar in her young naivete to the Canadian agent Yusef Kabira is currently targeting? We know M was conducting her own investigation independent of Bond on Yusef Kabira. Did she determine his current target, and purposefully chose Fields to teach Bond a lesson when he eventually gets around to going after his real enemy (the one Bond pretends is not important - but M knows better)? Whatever the case, Bond does get closure - a quantum of solace - by saving the Canadian agent from Vesper's fate. He can't save Vesper or Fields, but he saves the next one.

I've always had a soft spot for this one. The editing ruins most of the action, there's some rough edges from the unfinished script. But at its core, this is a very solid followup to Casino Royale.
The Tosca sequence is my favourite scene in an otherwise meh movie. My friends and I couldn’t help but think about when we went to a performance of Tosca a few years ago.
I've always really liked Quantum of Solace. I liked that it tied up Casino Royale's story threads, I loved the imperfect Bond; Daniel Craig has just enough of the polished wit and swagger to be recognisable as Bond, but still makes mistakes and it was here that for me that the theory that Bond/007 is just an eternal code name and it's a different person who gets given that title became film canon. And most of all, I liked that it wasn't "evil guy doing evil things because evil", it was a shady company trying to shamelessly control everything and doing anything to make it happen. It felt real (Even though I didn't know it was based off real events), and that's great. I think the best spy movies are the ones that could actually happen in real life and just be so secretive that we just don't hear about it and this film fits that perfectly for me. I treat Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace as full part 1 & 2 and always watch both together and I'm never disappointed.
This guy is Good! Not sure how these came into my channel recommendations, but I'm glad they did. Has made me look again at my CraigBond collection. More please! 😀

Watched this again for the first time in years. It fares much better now than it did then. What works is the subtext, subplots, villains, bond’s arc. I like the stakes, for instance during the opera scene he threw a guy off a rooftop and that guy turned out to be a special forces agent and M was trying to reprimand bond for the man’s death. I like how bond is more of a mindless brute, seeking revenge through his duty, seeking solace. However his actions have consequences. The writing is exquisite as it is intricate. Camille is also the most three-dimensional bond woman to date, not another trophy, she actually has an arc, a compelling one at that. This film takes a regal, melancholy yet poignant approach to the bond mythos which is actually rather refreshing for a change. I think the issue is that it’s not as stylistic or as outlandish as previous entries. It’s more grit than goof, more robust in tone rather than tongue in cheek. Some things don’t work (shaky cam gets a little nauseous) every major set piece hits it’s mark visually but there’s no outstanding sequences. Having said that, the climax does deliver a suspenseful ride, with dazzling special effects and stunts but provides sufficient closure in terms of character development and story. This makes the film feel more earnest. QOS isn’t a bond classic per se but it’s a subversive watch.
My absolute favourite Bond movie - it's stripped down to the basics, nothing superfluous & a wonderful & the best ever heroine in Natasha Kurylenko - Bond & Montes exchange one brief kiss at the end - perfect! 🙂
Performative Activism has been a huge part of most activist movements, and that was one of the two reasons I loved this film's villain. That and the ending, with her breakdown in the fire being one of the hardest to watch scenes in Bond history.
I always loved how in the opening car chase, the bad guys are just spraying bullets everywhere the whole time, and then Bond just picks up his gun at the end and fires a couple rounds and it's all over.
I just love that they filmed at the actual set of Tosca in Bregenz, Austria. A week later or so Tosca was then open for the public. The actors of Tosca in the movie were the actual Tosca actors of that year's theater, which is normally held every year (Bregenzer Seefestspiele). Oh, the stage is always in water.
If you ever review the Snyder Cut you should knock a win off because of all the people that left mean comments on your videos for not reviewing it yet, since you mentioned that when reviewing Elysium.
I think this might be the artsiest Bond film. Each of the 4 major action set pieces are based on the four elements: Earth - car chase in the quarry, Water - boat chase, Air - plane crash & parachuting, Fire - exploding hotel in the desert.
I only saw this bond movie once and never had any desire to go back and rewatch it. Until now. This video singlehandedly made me want to watch all the Daniel Craig Bond movies in a marathon. Now I just have to find them all somewhere.

@bloodymuzzle
Right, quantum is much more of an internal journey for Bond, so it does make sense that instead of being the main feature of the movie Greene is just a despicable asshole along the way.
Dominic Greene is a new level of evil. A great Bond villain addition.
@bloodymuzzle Wow! Great points!! I agree with what you are saying.
Greene was awesome
Maks Mikkelsen is usually the person most think of when thinking about treasured Danish actors. But Jesper Christensen (Mr. White) deserve some love to. (I also love how he read the Danish Harry Potter audiobook, best book reading I have ever experienced).
I think Mr. White is the best part of this film, I know he's only really in two scenes, but they're both excellent, and Chirstensen plays them so well
@@christianwise637 yeah mr. White, yeah science.
it didn't even occur to me that that's two danish villains in a row.... that's not a country you expect to have bond bad guys! are either of them using their regular accents in the bond movies? I'm no good at european accents, I can't tell
They both have distinctly danish accents
"I think one of the fundamental staples of craig bond that I enjoy is how imperfect he actually is, he's constantly adapting, his plan never plays out as he intended and sometimes it hurts"
Yes, this!!
What I love so much about Daniel Craig James Bond is that he is not perfect, he has feelings. He feels the most real out of all James Bonds ever
Quantum of Solace is really an underrated Bond Gem...
that's true but unlike the rest... this movie only shines when you have watched Casino Royale before.
No. Even the theme sucks. For a Bond at least.
@@Black0raz0r I agree. This movie serves as a sort’ve desert to Casino Royale. Recommended to be watched just after Casino Royale for as if it was a 2-parter rather than a separate film.
Please do more 007 movies! I would love to hear your thoughts on Tomorrow Never Dies and Skyfall.
Goldeneye too
If you haven’t guessed by his outro, he’s doing Skyfall next week. Hallelujah!!
@@evanstewart2534 Right?!? I've been wanting him to do Skyfall for years. If we're lucky he'll follow it up with Spectre on the weekend of No Time to Die's US premiere.
I think Skyfall was liked by everyone, so it should be a pretty easy and enjoyable video.
@@feelingReckless13 That is my hope too. I think Spectre was the weakest of all of the films, but it would be nice to round it out here.
This is actually my favorite Bond film. Never understood the hate it got.
Completely agree. Loved the opening scenes, the South American staging and most of all the Opera scene. Really solid Bond imo.
❤ red hair pretty skins woman
I’m pretty sure the Spider-Man pointing meme in this isn’t for overreaching intelligence agencies, but imperialist powers in developing nations. Britain in the 1800s and the US during and after the Cold War.
Agreed
Yes, the US did many great things during and after the Cold War.
Very underrated film (but as much as Die Another Day) ! I love how it's one of the only films were Bond don't "get the girl". She also has a real agenda of her own and is a good mirror of him.
6:16 I didn't know about the four elements things, and that only makes the film even better !
While not the best out of the Craig Bond films, I still really enjoyed it! Can't wait to see you do Skyfall, many wins to be had.
I'm already removing 3 wins for killing off Judi Dench, blowing up the DB5 and insulting the audience with the exploding pen quip, so he's gonna start the video at minus 3
@@deadponic117 I live how Q makes fun of the pen and then the very next movie gives him a watch with c4 inside.
Glad to see you’re getting back on the Bond movies
there's something weirdly hysterical to me about how matter-of-fact Bond is when he tosses Camille's unconscious body into some guy's arms and just keeps going.
The actress who plays Camille played Taskmaster in Black Widow
@@jackanasaurus5905 that's cool as hell, I did not put that together even though he hinted at it in his black widow video.
For all the reasons I love this film and continue to defend it, the biggest was the plot. It's fuckin' real and that was before I learned it ACTUALLY HAPPENED.
It made Quantum scarier than any other Bond threat to me.
I don't think the quick cuts in this movie were that bad
When done right, each shot added a new element to the scene
Sorry but are you nuts? That scene at the opera was ridiculous. That was just utterly poor edited. Nothing more. It was just poor from the editors and stunt coordinator stand point
@@kinnexion like I said, when done right
@@LeonardoKlotz my apologies. I thought you were implying that Quantum did it right. I misunderstood
@@kinnexion I liked that one actually. The horse race one I liked a lot less.
@@kinnexion The one thing i have learned that south korean action movies seem to utilize quick cuts really well. When they are done right they can make the action feel more visceral
I love how the suits keep going up in cost, every mention.
Bond: I don't think we need anyone competing with what I'm wearing! (Loved the AD running gag)
The sequence where Bond utters "you and I had a mutual friend" is one of my all time favourite Bond moments. Sound design, as you stated helps here. The gun noises are sharp as hell
14:20 I don't think it's about Intelligence Agencies, but the colonial empires. Britain *literally* carved out 1/3rd-1/4th of the world for itself.
It’s funny, the original line was “imperialism” but after the last few weeks I’ve been fun shy about saying words that seem to trigger some of my audience.
That's how I read it.
Indeed, the world's a much better place because of Britain.
@@konroh2 Press X to doubt.
@@TraustiGeir Two factors, the world is better because of all nations. But we can't deny the impact of Britain. Imperialism causes harm, but it also spreads technology, culture and learning, making everyone able to partake.
I always liked Quantum of Solace, never understood why it got so much hate. Now, after the last film (No Time to Die), Solace is one of the best of the Craig era.
Thank you. I loved QoS and don't understand why it got so much hate. How you described it was perfect.
I think Quantum gets forgotten as the one between Casino Royale and Skyfall, but on the spectrum of Bond films it is actually quite good.
"I enjoyed this movie even more than I remembered, and I never really disliked it that much."
Full agree!
Quantum for me is like the matrix sequels. People remember it as bad but when you rewatch it now you realise its pretty good
I've always enjoyed QoS, I never understood why it go so much hatred.
If I could control the situation I would have had
In CraigBond 3: SPECTRE becomes part of the CraigBond universe because it is needed by Quantum. Now that Quantum is more out in the open they would need a SPECTRE. division.
In CraigBond 4: SPECTRE takes over Quantum from the inside. You could have introduced Blofeld in 3 and even in 4 Bond unknowingly helps Blofeld take down Quantum
In Cragibond 5: You get a less cringy background for the personal conflict between Bond and Blofeld because Bond realized he was used by Blofeld.
It was more an indictment of the media and the stress of the job than him implying he was done with the character. Everyone gets exhausted, and acting is a job like any other.
I don't think an over the top flippant comment is an unreasonable reaction.
This was the first film I saw at the cinema, the car chase blew my mind so this film will always have a special place in my heart
I'm so happy that this film is getting more love recently. I freaking love this particular film, especially since it was a direct sequel to Casino which is still one of my favorites of all of the Bond films. And I can say that I've only not seen SPECTER. I swear I will before No Time To Die comes out
9:16 Giancarlo Giannini is always a win (awesome actor and Voice actor too)
Also, from an Italian, the exchange between him and her wife in Italian sounds different because Mathis ask his wife why she offers Bond wine (in Italian Mathis doesn't say fine, but is implied), but she didn't replied "you buy only cheap wine" but "It's just cheap wine", so in Italian is actually the wife that is serving intentionally two-buck Chuck to Bond.
@CinemaWins in English subtitles they make Mathis look stingy for no reason
Very underrated film. Absolutely love Quantum. Great video!
So the first viewing I was confused as hell and didn't enjoy it, when my dad and I did a marathon we understood where the story was going and were able to follow the plot found some enjoyment out of it.

I think Quantum might be one of my all times favourite films and I'm so glad you covered it!
Of all the Bond movies Craig made, Quantum of Solace had the best action sequences IMO. Shaky cam and jump cuts were a bit much but still let you follow what actually happens. Also, fight in the hotel room is one of the greatest fight scene ever filmed
always had a soft spot for quantum, liked the ending that he didnt have to get the girl. And the beginning was amazing.
THANK YOU for getting back to the Bond franchise! I found your channel because of "Casino Royale" and have loved the channel. Also, I actually really like this movie and felt it was needed after "Casino Royale" and as always I enjoyed your take on it. My least favorite Bond movie is "Diamonds Are Forever" because it ruined the devastating ending to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" plus it was just ridiculous. "Quantum of Solace" shows Bond really becoming Bond and I this it's GREAT!

"Are they huge... tracks of land?" I love it when a youtube video references one of your favorite movies of all time. (To anyone who didn't get it, it is a reference to Monty Python and The Holy Grail)
Yes, QOS will definitely improve over time! This is actually a pretty good movie! Certainly the best performance of Craig as Bond! *** "Spectre" however gets even worse and worse and worse...
I love how the price of the suit keeps increasing throughout the video :-)
Come on!

I've always had a soft spot for this one. The editing ruins most of the action, there's some rough edges from the unfinished script. But at its core, this is a very solid followup to Casino Royale.
Love the Arrested Development reference with the suit price
I’m so glad someone else got this
The Tosca sequence is my favourite scene in an otherwise meh movie.
Absolutely love how the suit prices progresses as the video goes on
This guy is Good! Not sure how these came into my channel recommendations, but I'm glad they did. Has made me look again at my CraigBond collection.

The price of the suit going up every single time for some reason really had me cracking up 🤣
Watched this again for the first time in years. QOS isn’t a bond classic per se but it’s a subversive watch.
can't wait for an everything great about Shang-chi when that finally happens.
This makes me want to go back and watch Bond. Its been awhile.

Performative Activism has been a huge part of most activist movements, and that was one of the two reasons I loved this film's villain.
That and the ending, with her breakdown in the fire being one of the hardest to watch scenes in Bond history.

I Think you Should Do The Toy Story Movies

I've never understood why this movie is so hated. That car chase alone is one of the best opening sequences in the whole Bond franchise.
Since you point out so many things, one more, Giancarlo Giannini (Mathis) is a monster of an actor, watch some of his stuff.
I only saw this bond movie once and never had any desire to go back and rewatch it. Until now. This video singlehandedly made me want to watch all the Daniel Craig Bond movies in a marathon. Now I just have to find them all somewhere.
