- This is PT.7 of this Gen V Engine Swap and 80s square body crew cab restore video series.
In this video we really got started in on the 4x4 conversion. We got the Skys Offroad Design Front Leaf Spring hangers measured and welded into position. There is still more work to be done on the 4x4 conversion, but this was a great start.
I used the same kit to convert my 1982 GMC C3500 long-wheelbase chassis cab to 4wd. There was a lot of measuring, but it went together super easy. I think it is much stronger than using stock brackets and it is 4.5 inches of lift at the same time. I followed it up with a 12 valve Cummins, NV4500, NP205 combo with a dana 60 front axle. I have been seriously thinking about a single wheel conversion so I can run bigger tires.
Awesome I’m glad to hear that someone else has ran with the same kit and has positives to say about it! I also drilled some holes and bolted for some extra strength. That sounds like a beast can’t go wrong with that combo.
No way the same last name. Great video Mr. Pitts
Thank you Mr. Pitts! I appreciate it.
I think ya made ur goal congrats on 120
Yes sir! Wasn’t sure if I was going to make it and then suddenly overshot it by 20. Thank you!
Hey there, nice job at your conversion "BUT" your wrong with your statement about "You can make any Chevy truck inti a 4x4, I have a 1988 Chevy 3500 Dually 2x, ive checked out all ways of trying to convert my truck into a 4x4, my front frame rails are not straight like yours are mine are radius around the coil spring saddle, I came to find out that to do the conversion i`d have to cut my frame off about haft way through my cab and weld on a different year frame to my rear frame rails, I just wanted you to know the difference in my year Truck and other years, great job, Robert c/o Robert Hernandez Construction
Thank you and oh ok. Well that’s good to know.
I want one of those trucks
Planning on making my own kit, was wondering if you could help me out.
On the front hanger mount; how far is the hole dropped down from the frame?
On the rear hanger frame mount; how far is the center of the hole from the frame?
And lastly; how long are your shackles and what "lift" are the leafs you're using?
Appears you have around 8-9 inches of lift.
I will take those measurements when I go back out to the shop. The leafs are 2.5 inch soft ride leafs and yes it’s probably around the 8-9 inch mark.
@@MikePittsVlogs Awesome. Thank you!
I had a question about your measurements, when you say 50 7/8 from the bolt on the body mount, are you referring to the large bolt that actually bolts the body to the frame or the rivet at the front of the body mount?
I don't think hes ever welded before. Did you check his drivers licence?
Your probably right! I tried to check it but he said he doesn’t have one.
@@MikePittsVlogs Makes sense.
That front crossmember you welded in was that a kit or did you make it
It was a kit from sky’s off-road design.
4wd square body frames kick up 1” higher in the front more than 2wd.
Yeah, I’ve noticed a few differences in the 2 and 4 wheel drive frames that I’ve had to work through.
No difference
@@hermanmunster5831you can look at the side of a 2wd square and a 4x4 and see the difference. Stop trying to start crap
Good day, I have a 77 GMC camper special 2wd, my plan is to make this a 4wd. From my research on RUclips it seems that most people do the conversions by doing tons of fabrication and frame modifications. My question is this, why do people not do body swaps instead? With swapping the body on a 4x4 chassis a person only needs to modify the trans tunnel in the cab (or install a 2 inch body lift). Am I wrong with my thought process?
That would be correct; however, finding a reasonably priced 4wd crew cab square body when I was looking wasn’t working out so I decided I buy a 2wd with a decent cab and do the conversion.
👍
How much it money it would take to do mine I have a 1990 chave silver r
I'm actually building one myself.
Awesome man! What year?

@@albearden6158 oh that’ll be a nice rig when your done. What transfer case?
@@MikePittsVlogs 208 all gear driven
How much to do mine? Take my money
What was the kit you used?
I used the sky’s off-road design straight axle conversion kit for the front axle. A CFM industries K10 engine crossmember (had to be modified) and for the rear single axle conversion/ I used a sky’s off-road design shackle flip kit and a Atech Fabrication rear leaf hanger for a K10/20.
Y not just put the gm brackets on like the factory coulda been dun in an hour!
I considered it after I had already bought the conversion kit and decided to decommission my other truck, but one issue I would have ran into is the back shackles/ bracket of the front leaf springs off the GM would not have been wide enough for the 1 ton frame. I could have trimmed the frame but already had the new kit. I also came across the brackets to do the conversion on off-road design after the fact. Multiple ways it could’ve been done but it was my first time ever doing it.
